- Abstract
- This geological guide will assist tourists to choose and visit easily accessible sites that exemplify the sensational vistas in Banff, Jasper and Yoho National Parks. It was this breathtaking scenery for which the parks were given status as a UNESCO Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site. The route is along the principle highways from Canmore to Banff, to Lake Louise, a side trip to Field, BC, back to Lake Louise and then north to Jasper through the Icefields Parkway. Explanations, color photographs, illustrations and maps highlight the geology for 50 sites. Mountains, rivers, glaciers and 500 million year fossils of the Burgess Shale are described. The book will assist travellers on how to arrive at a viewpoint, where to park and where to walk. Travellers interested in natural history such as birding, the vegetation and wildlife will want this book to understand the geological wonders that they are. Dale Leckie is an award-winning geologist who is internationally recognized for his many contributions to geology. Dale has a Ph.D. in Geology from McMaster University (1984), a M.Sc in Geography from McMaster University (1980) and B.Sc. in Geography from University of Alberta (1977). Dale Leckie is a Professional Geologist who has worked as a scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada and as Chief Geologist in a large Canadian energy company. He has edited numerous books and published over a 100 refereed papers most of those on the geology of Western Canada. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Geoscience Department at the University of Calgary. Dale has been President of the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM) and Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG). He has been leading geological field trips into the Rocky Mountains throughout his career. (from McNally Robinson website)

- Abstract
- Nestled in and around the Rocky Mountains are a series of remote backcountry lodges offering the experience of a lifetime. Katie Mitzel has spent the last twenty years as a chef in these lodges, joyfully feeding hungry travelers who have journeyed hundreds of miles to have their own backcountry adventures. Whether you're wilderness hiking, off-piste skiing, or simply relaxing, the backcountry offers total immersion in the stunning mountains, coupled with the allure of completely unplugging from daily life. In Rocky Mountain Cooking, Katie shares her favorite lodge recipes, many taking inspiration from the colors and textures of mountains, glacial lakes, wildflowers, and starry nights. Her dishes are full of unexpected flavors and mouthwatering aromas, but are accessible enough to create at home, using ingredients readily available from the grocery store (brought into the backcountry for her on horseback or by snowmobile or helicopter!). Cooking in the backcountry has brought Katie unique moments of inspiration and gratitude, like carefully adjusting ingredients when baking at altitude, and appreciating the simple benefits of water and heat after manually hauling water by the gallon and cooking without power. As a result, her food is simple, fulfilling, hearty, and comforting. Start your day with Skillet-Baked Huevos Rancheros. Enjoy a hearty Summer Hiking Salad after a long trek or busy workday. Snack on some Climbers' Cookies at the top of a ski run. Then indulge in Baked Halibut with Scallops and Asparagus, along with a slice of Lemony Lavender Buttermilk Cake for dessert. All of the recipes are perfect for gathering your family and friends around the table to share a meal, hear the stories from your outdoor adventures, and maybe plan your next. Filled with breathtaking landscape photography and profiles of select beloved lodges, Rocky Mountain Cooking brings the natural bliss of backcountry living into your daily life, no matter where you live. - Abstract
- In a North American rainforest, that few people even know exists, about a dozen dwindling herds of caribou are struggling to survive. Caribou Rainforest doesn’t tell an easy story, ask easy questions, or pretend that there are easy solutions to the possible extinction of the last mountain caribou herds found in Canada and the United States. There are fewer than twenty animals left in the last US herd. Yet what Caribou Rainforest does—with photographs, words, and science—is explain why this is happening, so that as a community we don’t repeat our mistakes, even when our intentions are good. Author and photographer David Moskowitz has studied and photographed these caribou extensively in order to understand their plight. He hasn’t found villains, but rather climate change, predators, recreationists, settler colonialism, industrial logging, mineral extraction, and a perfect confluence of factors that have worked against this fragile species and the fragile environment upon which it relies. The story of this iconic animal and stunning landscape provides an example of shifting conservation challenges and tactics in the twenty-first century. Mountain caribou have been identified as an “umbrella species” by conservationists, meaning that protecting their habitat also helps preserve many other species who depend on the same ecosystem. The discussion topics are controversial and wrenching—upending the forestry economy of the region, exterminating wolves (who also struggle to survive) to protect the caribou, limiting recreational access to critical habitat, respecting the rights of indigenous peoples. The issues are contentious, but the opportunity to craft solutions still exists. If we do in fact lose the caribou, the task then pivots to how can we protect what remains of this rare rainforest ecosystem. In Caribou Rainforest, the author searches for lessons that can turn despair into hope: their story can become the inspiration and catalyst for committed change. (from Caribou Rainforest website)

- Abstract
- Born in the west but raised initially in the east, Dale Portman was eight years old when his family headed back to the land of the Rockies. Growing up in Calgary, he was introduced to the Rocky Mountains at an early age and as a young man eventually found work in Banff National Park, where he spent most of his time in the saddle while working for outfitter Bert Mickle, based out of Skoki Lodge near Lake Louise. Jobs in the local tourist industry and at a couple of ski hills followed. Eventually Dale was drawn to the warden service, doing avalanche control and forecasting in Rogers Pass, with the backcountry of northern Jasper, Yoho National Park and Field, BC, eventually becoming the stage for many memorable, humorous, tragic and life-affirming moments. The Green Horse takes the reader on a journey through a time when our mountain national parks were less touristy and more substantive. When there was space for everyone to enjoy without having to line up and there was a sense of freedom and adventure in the air. (From Rocky Mountain Books website)

- Abstract
- Written by one of the most respected experts in water and water-associated climate science and featuring stunning photography collected over the past four decades, Our Vanishing Glaciers explains and illustrates why water is such a unique substance and how it makes life on this planet possible. Focusing on the Columbia Icefield, the largest and most accessible mass of ice straddling the Continental Divide in western North America, and featuring photographs, illustrations, aerial surveys and thermal imaging collected over more than 40 years of the author’s personal observations, the book reveals the stunning magnitude of glacial ice in western Canada. Citing evidence to suggest that in the Canadian Rocky Mountain national parks alone, as many as 300 glaciers may have disappeared since 1920, this large-format, fully illustrated coffee table book graphically illustrates the projected rate of glacier recession in the mountain West over the rest of this century and serves as a profound testament to the beauty and importance of western Canada’s water, ice and snow. - Abstract
- Robert Sandford has spent a lot time watching and thinking about water. This was not because he was predisposed to do so, but because the importance of water gradually caught up with who he was and what he was doing with his life. As this self-reflective book demonstrates, when one takes up the serious study of water, one cannot but be surprised at how far that interest can take you: from the very origins of the cosmos right down to the unique structure and remarkable qualities of water as a molecule. It takes you to the depths of the oceans, to the upper reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere, and into the centres of storms. You fall to Earth with raindrops, travel tiny streams and great rivers, go round and round in lakes and ponds. Your study takes you down to the very roots of trees, into the soil, along the dark, dank banks of underground rivers. It takes you from one person’s thirst to the thirst of nations; from the demographics of the past to how those may drastically change in the absence of water in decades to come. Following water takes one back and forth in time, linking us to what the Earth was like in the past; what it is now; and how water will shape what it will be in the future. (from publisher's website)
