History / Biographical: Jimmy Simpson Sr. was a backpacker and outfitter in the Banff / Rocky Mountains region. He built the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge near Bow Lake which him and his wife Williamina ran from 1920 - 1945, and led many hunting and climbing expeditions in the area. Jimmy and Williamina had three children: Jimmy Simpson Jr. (who took over the Lodge in 1945), and daughters Margaret and Mary Simpson who became famous as professional ice skaters, the 'Simpson Sisters' in the late 1930's.

History / Biographical: Banff Winter Carnival, also known as Winter Sports of the Canadian Rockies, was the first post-war winter sports programme held in Banff, Alberta. The organization had Banff directors, Calgary directors and Directors-at-large from Alberta and outside the province. A wide variety of social and sports events took place under the organization's direction.

Scope & Content: File consists of prints and negatives depicting Banff Winter Carnival events including ski jumping, hockey, figure skating, log chopping competitions, toboggan races, swimming contests, dog sled races, ice sculptures and queen contests between 1920 and 1949, primarily from the 1920s. Includes snowshoe hikes, Sunshine Ski Camp, and personal motor trips to Lake Minnewanka. File includes photographs and prints by Lou Crosby, Dan McCowan, Byron Harmon. Some prints are stamped or annotated by the photographer and include processing receipts and original housing envelopes.

History / Biographical: John ["Jack"] MacAulay (1918 - 2000) was born in Banff to parents Ella Maud [Woodworth] MacAulay and the late John MacAulay. Jack also had a twin brother, Thomas ["Ted"] MacAulay (1918 - 1984). Jack and Ted's father, John, died in an accident in November 1917, prior to their birth. Following the marriage of their mother, Maud, to Forest Kidney in 1923, Jack and Ted were raised together in the Kidney family residence in Banff. Jack was an avid hockey player during his teenage years; following an accident in 1940, however, a serious injury to Jack's right eye prevented him from competing. From 1943 to 1945, Jack worked for Boeing Aircraft of Canada Ltd., and in 1946 he was appointed as the Chief Inspector of War Assets for Alberta and the Yukon Territories. In March 1946 he met Karin Wallensteen, and the two were married in October of that year. Jack and Karin had 6 children together: sons Herb and John, and daughters Karen, Shelley, Jodi and Julie-Ann. Throughout his life, Jack remained an active member of Banff's sports community. Jack served as a coach for the Banff Minor Hockey League for 46 years. Jack also took on several other positions within the Bow Valley community, including work as a volunteer with the Banff Figure Skating Club, a co-founder of the Banff Recreation Board, and a member of the Banff Advisory Council, the Banff Hospital Board and the Banff School Board.

Scope & Content: File consists of 7 photograph prints [including one duplicate] pertaining to Jack MacAulay's childhood and young adult years, and 6 photographs of Mary and Margaret Simpson gifted to Jack by Mary Simpson. History / Biographical: "Housekeeping," 1987, directed by Bill Forsyth and starring Christine Lahti, Sara Walker, and Andrea Burchill. Set in the Pacific Northwest. After their mother commits suicide, two sisters go to live with their eccentric aunt in a remote mountain town Location filming primarily in Nelson, BC, but skating scenes were filmed on Spray Lakes Reservoir in Kananaskis. Trivia: Director Bill Forsyth original wanted to find a large frozen lake in the Yukon to film the skating scene that closes the movie. Bruno Engler, as the on-scene photographer in Nelson, suggested the much more accessible Spray Lakes near Canmore. The movie, which is set in the 1950s, was originally going to be filmed in the same location as the book its based on, Sandpoint Idaho. However, the town of Sandpoint had changed too much by 1986 to suit the film's needs and instead the town of Nelson, British Columbia was chosen.
