Building on his previous two books, Reilly acquaints the reader with the ironies and futilities of an approach to justice so adversarial and dysfunctional that it often increases crime rather than reducing it. He examines the radically different indigenous approach to wrongdoing, which is restorative rather than retributive, founded on the premise that people are basically good and wrongdoing is the aberration, not that humans are essentially evil and have to be deterred by horrendous punishments. He marshalls extensive evidence, including an historic 19th-century US case that was ultimately decided according to Sioux tribal custom, not US federal law. When Bad Medicine first appeared in 2010 it was an immediate sensation, a Canadian bestseller that sparked controversy and elicited praise nationwide for its unflinchingly honest portrayal of tribal corruption in a First Nation in Alberta. Now, in a new, revised and updated edition, retired Alberta jurist John Reilly sketches the latest legal developments surrounding tribal leadership at Morley and the state of governance on Canadian reserves, as well as national developments such as Canada’s long-delayed assent to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, currently wending its way through the Senate, and the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Early in his career, Judge John Reilly did everything by the book. His jurisdiction included a First Nations community plagued by suicide, addiction, poverty, violence and corruption. He steadily handed out prison sentences with little regard for long-term consequences and even less knowledge as to why crime was so rampant on the reserve in the first place. In an unprecedented move that pitted him against his superiors, the legal system he was part of, and one of Canada’s best-known Indian chiefs, the Reverend Dr. Chief John Snow, Judge Reilly ordered an investigation into the tragic and corrupt conditions on the reserve. - A tanned, buckskin jacket with floral beadwork design. It appears to be Stoney beadwork because of the colour combinations. The jacket has beading on the shoulders and the the top front and has fringes below. The beading above across the back is of flowers with colours red, orange, beige, blue, white and red and leaves in colours of green and turquoise. The beaded butterflies on the front are (two on each side) red and blue wings surrounded by pink, and blue and orange wings surrounded by beige; all the antennae are blue. The collar is pinked and also has a strip of 1.0 pinked buckskin sewn onto it 1.50 cm from the edge. The jacket is closed by leather thongs for tying. There are two front pockets, with pinked edges. The pockets are beaded in red, yellow, blue, green and white in what seems to be a flower. There is a lining, extending 25.5 cm down from the collar, in red and white checked cotton with two horizontal lines of red hearts and flowers with green leaves. On viewer’s left there are two border strips of white and blue flowers on red with green leaves. The back of the collar is lined with maroon velvet.REF: 103.08.1148 In the pocket of the jacket at the time of cataloguing: a square (26.0cm) white linen handkerchief with a lace border. It has green embroidered shamrocks and stems plus seven (approx.0.50 cm) dots around the shamrocks.REF: 105.02.1182 In the pocket of the jacket at the time of cataloguing: a piece of paper (11.0x12.5cm wide) with Willie’s notes on it. One side is written in script with a black felt pen “2 Rolled oats 1 milk 3 cream 1 Butter Veg fruit oranges Veg Meat”, viewer’s left, printed “NEWSPAPER GRACE” a line underneath and then “CARD FOR ERLING”. On the opposite side written in script in blue ball point pen “Bread at Pop’s, Grace and Gladys slene (sic) cody”. There are scribbles over the writing.
