History / Biographical
Charlie Hunter, 1888-1982, was a guide and outfitter at Pincher Creek, Banff, Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg, Alberta. Hunter was born in Illinois, USA and came to Pincher Creek in 1904. There he began his career as a guide and outfitter, expanding to the Banff area in 1930s. Hunter travelled extensively throughout the world.

Fonds consists of selected colour transparencies mainly pertaining to Hunter's world travels, including Africa, 1961, northern India and region, 1967, Norway, 1974, and New Zealand and Australia, date unknown. Also, scenic views of the Canadian Rockies. Selected from total of 1633 slides. Accompanied by one photograph of Kootenai Brown. Also contains one photograph album previously belonging to Charlie Hunter consisting of ca.211 b&w photographs depicting Canadian Rockies tours and packing trips.

History / Biographical
Charlie Hunter (1888-1982) of Pincher Creek, Alberta, worked as a guide for Jim Boyce in the 1920s and 1930s, and was especially associated with Caroline Hinman's tours. Don Schoening (1918-2018), Charlie Hunter's nephew, worked as a wrangler for his uncle on Hinman's trail rides in Banff National Park in 1934 and 1936. Schoening also ran the pack trains that carried the building supplies for Skoki Lodge in 1936.
Scope & Content
Album contains ca.211 black and white photographs pertaining to backcountry trail rides through the Canadian Rockies (1930s), belonging to guide Charlie Hunter. Individuals in the photographs include Caroline Hinman and Lillian Gest. Images depict tour groups in the Rockies, some portraits of individuals and various landscape shots (forests, mountain views, etc.)
