History / Biographical: Charlie Hunter, 1888-1982, was a guide and outfitter at Pincher Creek, Banff, Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg, Alberta. Hunter was born in Illinois, USA and came to Pincher Creek in 1904. There he began his career as a guide and outfitter, expanding to the Banff area in 1930s. Hunter travelled extensively throughout the world.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of selected colour transparencies mainly pertaining to Hunter's world travels, including Africa, 1961, northern India and region, 1967, Norway, 1974, and New Zealand and Australia, date unknown. Also, scenic views of the Canadian Rockies. Selected from total of 1633 slides. Accompanied by one photograph of Kootenai Brown. Also contains one photograph album previously belonging to Charlie Hunter consisting of ca.211 b&w photographs depicting Canadian Rockies tours and packing trips.

History / Biographical: Charlie Hunter (1888-1982) of Pincher Creek, Alberta, worked as a guide for Jim Boyce in the 1920s and 1930s, and was especially associated with Caroline Hinman's tours. Don Schoening (1918-2018), Charlie Hunter's nephew, worked as a wrangler for his uncle on Hinman's trail rides in Banff National Park in 1934 and 1936. Schoening also ran the pack trains that carried the building supplies for Skoki Lodge in 1936.

Scope & Content: Album contains ca.211 black and white photographs pertaining to backcountry trail rides through the Canadian Rockies (1930s), belonging to guide Charlie Hunter. Individuals in the photographs include Caroline Hinman and Lillian Gest. Images depict tour groups in the Rockies, some portraits of individuals and various landscape shots (forests, mountain views, etc.)

Scope & Content: File pertains to 29 letters and postcards written by Catharine Robb Whyte to her mother, Edith Morse Robb from October 1933 to December 1933 and primarily includes Peter and Catharine's trip to Hawaii. Other topics include Concord news, the birth of Barbara and Cliff White's baby, attending the World Fair in Chicago, Catharine's travels by train from New York to California [including the views and people she meets], sailing on the S.S. Lurline from San Francisco to Honolulu with Hollywood movie stars [Claudette Colbert, Mary Boland and director Cecil de Mille] on board heading to Hawaii to make a film [entitled Four Frightened People released in 1934?], arriving in Honolulu, Peter and Catharine painting at various locations, describing people, food, weather and locations in Honolulu and Honolai and Kauai, meeting various people, and having Christmas in Hawaii.

Notes: Please note: language pertaining to Indigenous Peoples, people of colour, and those of the Jewish faith used throughout is outdated and offensive. Some items were stapled together and therefore scanned together as one document. Included are 7 postcards and two magazine clippings. Letters are all handwritten and include some hotel and transportation letterheads. Some letters are marked with a small x in pencil, indicating where Jon Whyte made notes for use in his project "Catharine Robb Whyte, Peter Whyte: Commemorative Portfolio," originally published in 1981. Some letters also have numbers written in pencil crayon, believed to be from when originally processed. Some letters also have dates written in pencil of when the were received by Edith Morse Robb [?]. Letter 21 looks disjointed due to repeated page numbers and some blank space but these were stapled together so these pages were kept in this order to respect the archival record.

Notes: Some photographs in this file may be subject to copyright ownership by the Canadian Pacific company, and some were likely used for professional purposes at some point. However, these specific copies have been categorized as 'personal' rather than professional as they were kept by Nicholas Morant for personal use. All prints in this file were originally in frames, and were removed for storage and conservation reasons. Frames for items PA - 20, PA - 22 and PA - 23 were each labelled with the number '4827' on the back. The frame from PA - 23 also had an attached label which read as follows: "Hudson's Bay Company ART DEPARTMENT 4827 Winnipeg"
