- A bear and a man in the woods is the subject matter in this image. To the left a black bear stands on his back two legs and roars at the man that is located on the right side. Between the man and the bear is a tree covered in snow and there are several other trees surrounding them as well. The man looks frightened and has his arms half up in the air almost as if he is about to run away. In the foreground and around there feet is a lot of snow. The woodsman is wearing a hat and a heavy coat with a belt tied tight at the center.

- Brown and blue slate rock in the foreground with one lone stilted tree to the left; rocks are higher on the left almost meeting the walkway on the top of the dam. Lower mid-centre of the painting is the mass of swirling green, blue and white water rushing from the gates of the falls. The grey gates with water rushing down are mid-centre to the right. The walkway on the top of the dam extends throughout top-half of the painting. An outline of a rider and two horses are off to centre right, top of a mauve mountain behind and cloudy blue sky.

The foreground contains a grass-covered field (coloured in tans, ochre, red-brown and grey-brown) with trees scattered about. The foliage of the trees is coloured yellow, ochre and red-brown. Four of the tallest trees fill the righthand side of the picture. A small figure (clothed in black) sits sketching near the lower left corner. (The paint in this corner is in bad condition.) The large background mountain is coloured medium blue at the top, with lower slopes of green. Areas of loose rock are sketched in near the centre of the mountain; These small areas are brown-grey with touches of orange indicating (larch?) trees. The sky is light blue.
