Secret drawer has a letter inside from Catharine's mother dated October 7, 1938, part of it reads: "I am going to find out about the age of the desk 150 years anyway & most likely older. My father bought it 60 years ago, from the old Derby house in Salem, where Lafayette stayed & the desk was old then." Letter now in Archives M36/164.
