- Description
- A handheld hinged plastic and metal compass; the top side/lid (the surface of which extends 2.0cm further than the metal container/box) is the compass in clear plastic which is hinged onto a black metal container. The obverse side of the plastic lid, containing the compass, also serves as a ruler measuring in. and cm. The compass can be seen through the clear plastic top; the outside circular window is rimmed in metal with “PAT. SW. 152750 US 2824382 CAN. 542358 SWISS 314681 NORW. 89197 MADE IN SWEDEN FOR SILVA LTD. TORONTO, CANADA. The compass is closer to the left at the hinge where there are two rivets and a filled hole on either side, a white dot and then on the extended part three filled holes and two rivets for the opposite side metal loop and copper latch. The metal side of the box has two rivets by the hinge, two at the other end and one near the latch. The middle right of the inside lid has an outline of a tree in the rhc and the trademark “SILVA” underneath, then “THE RANGER”. Cm. marked off on top and cm. and mm. on the bottom. The inside face dial is calibrated in degrees starting with 360, every 20 degrees marked in numbers, i.e. 40, 60, 80, 100 and so on until it reaches 360. The metal ring has one screw attaching it to the compass between N and E, and one rivet on the letter N. On the outside face there is an outline of an arrow in black with two white dots on each side and there are six red diagonal lines across the compass face. The compass needle is half red and half white. The inside part starts at W docl. 40 calibrated to 20 and by degrees to 20 again and then to 40 E docl. The plastic lid has a riveted metal loop (at the centre edge) through which a green woven cotton shoelace is threaded through (for carrying or hanging); the shoelace ends are tied, securing a small metal pointer. Beneath that is a riveted copper piece of latch which fits into a catch on the container side. The black metal container is hinged onto the lid by four rivets. A mirror (which is cracked horizontally and held together by two strips of surgical tape) has a black line lengthwise and is attached with four rivets. The catch has two rivets on either side.
