- Description
- Walrus hide model kayak with wooden paddle. One piece of hide stretched tautly over wooden frame and sewn together from tip to tip on top. Wooden frame is held together with rawhide. Wooden user hole is laced with rawhide. 2 rawhide thongs in front of user hole and 1 behind are laced through the top part of kayak which serves to hold the oar. (b) paddle, 39.0 cm long is carved into 3 sections, has 3 nail holes also. NOTE: Sanson didn’t make the kayak; it was “Purchased by Pete and Catharine Whyte from N.B. Sanson auction, October 22, 1949 for $4.50 plus other things”.

- Fully equipped fishing kayak with man and catch. (a) Kayak 3.3x32.8x3.8, flat bottom and top. Four holes drilled on both edges 9.5 and 16.0 from tip through which sinew is looped and tied. 3 round holes towards back to secure b, c, and d. (b) fisherman 5.5x4.0x4.6, carved face, parka hood off his head. Arms extended with slits to hold the paddle (f): 15.0 long. (c) float 2.7x5.5x2.6, sinew tied into pack ca. 21.0 long and looped into (g) harpoon 10.5 long. (d) seal 2.0x5.3x2.0 has a hole drilled into back with a peg to go into kayak. Peg is cellophane tape covered string. (e) knife .3x7.2x1.2 (h) spear .3x8.5x1.0, hook on e end, hand grip the other.

Two of the same circular patterns, incised and stained, appear on the base of the prow of the kayak which is convex. Figure in ivory is attached to kayak at base. Face is incised and stained, back of figure has carved fringed coat details. Raised hand is fitted to hold spear (?) which is missing. b) Ivory paddle is 7 x .3 cm drilled at centre and at end where line is attached. c) Seal on line is in steatite, line tied to neck, line appears to be twisted string.
