The image is primarily a colour field of speckled grey, blue and brown and the top half has an opening that exposes a blue sky and an angular mountain peak, as if the peak is breaking through heavy clouds. The peak is black, white and brown with multiple short lines creating the depth and quality of the mountain. There seems to be about 7 colours used with the primary colours being blue, grey and brown. Under the image on the left is the title and edition number written in pencil, “Breakthrough 7/12” and on the bottom right is the artist signature and print year, “Wilfred Lambert /74”.

In the foreground is the low green vegetation and the grey/blue rocks on the trail to Assiniboine from the Sunshine area. Two people on horseback are on the viewer’s right; they are almost at the top of a pass. The pass is lower than the hills on either side of it. There is a line of green coniferous trees growing on both sides. Blue mountains are beyond, and above those, a blue/grey sky. On the white border lhc written in longhand is, “High Country, Canada” and on the rhc it is signed in longhand “Middleton”.
