a box that once contained cigarettes; it’s empty except for a folded piece of parchment. The box is covered with a light brown, heavily textured paper made to resemble leather. There is a paper hinge for opening and closing and a piece of white paper glued onto the top of the box with green lettering: in the left hand top corner “BY APPOINTMENT TO”, the royal insignia underneath, and below that “HIS MAJESTY THE KING”; printed diagonally across “20 STRAIGHT CUT 20” right hand “MANUFACTURED BY BENSON AND HEDGES (CANADA) LIMITED” and across the bottom “LONDON MONTREAL NEW YORK” and on the other side of the cover another piece of white paper glued on with exactly the same information “BY APPOINTMENT TO”, the royal insignia underneath “HIS MAJESTY THE KING”, diagonally across “20 STRAIGHT CUT 20” right hand “MANUFACTURED BY BENSON AND HEDGES (CANADA) LIMITED and across the bottom “LONDON MONTREAL NEW YORK”. Previous to opening, the box had a grey and white stamp sealing it shut (it is now in two pieces because it has been opened) ”20” in both top corners. An arc “CANADA” a larger (1.0Cm) “20” with the word “CIGARETTES “ printed inside a rectangular box; on the the bottom”CIGARETTES” underneath “SERIES 1915”.

There is a remnant of the paper excise tax stamp in black and white. OF CANADA, LIMITED, MONTREAL, CANADA SUCCESSOR TO JOHN PLAYER 7 SONS, ENGLAND.
