Description
A gas mask (a) and its case (b).a) A gas mask made of fine rubberized canvas. The mask is held securely to the face by four elastic straps and one twill tape strap. The mask has round glass lenses with metal frames. There is a spring clamp inside to pinch the nostrils and a rubber tube for insertion into the mouth that leads to a metal nozzle outside with a rubber sack. The breathing aparatus is attached to a cloth hose with rigid rings leading to metal canister with a filter at the bottom. b) The rectangular carrying case is made of khaki coloured canvas with a snapping flap and ring on the sides. The case has two compartments to fit the canister on one side and a metal coil at the bottom of the other which also contains the mask. A long cord with a square envelope and cardboard is attached to one corner. The case has a canvas shoulder strap with an adjustable metal buckle and button. There is an instruction sheet inside. The case has “-RIS ONLY” and “3” stencilled on the flap.

Description
A Japanese samurai sword with dirk and brown scabbard. (a) sword, long curved steel blade attached by brass collar to hilt. Handle of wood with pebbled texture of sharkskin applied and showing through diamond shaped openings left in decorative wrapping with leather strips over handle. Metal cap at end of handle has low relief casting of gilded dragonfly on one corner, a small bronze insect is caught below the leather wrapping on either side of the handle. Rectangular sword guard at hilt has incised design and vestiges of gold painted design with a decorative opening either side. (b) dirk, short narrow blade set into metal handle with inlay of bronze in shape of stem with leaves and two seed pods on one side, fits into slit in top of scabbard. Note: part of inlay missing. (c) scabbard, hollow wood shaped to fit the blade and covered with finely textured brown leather. Slots on either side near hilt are banded at top with smooth black strip, wood?, horn?, and further down as well, where dirk enters. Ornate metal cap at tip extends in a strip 16.0 cm along back edge and 5.0 cm along front edge with narrow metal band around scabbard 10.0 cm from tip. Small gilded dragonfly on one corner of cap at tip.

A small narrow sword with wooden scabbard and handle shaped like angular dragon's head. (a) sword, small with thin, narrow, sharply pointed blade, of one piece with handle which is shaped like angular dragon head on long neck. Blade is inlaid with strips of bronze on each side and along spine with incised geometric designs, and a double notch cut into spine on each side near the middle. Handle is overlaid with bronze strips into which designs and features of dragon have been cut. (b) scabbard, made of two pieces of wood shaped to fit the blade and held together with five metal strips around the outside, evenly spaced along length, one strap missing. Front side completely carved with intricate geometric design and small slit carved out near top through which is tied a leather thong.

A Japanese samurai sword with black cord handle and black scabbard. (a) sword, long curved steel blade connected at hilt with brass to wooden handle covered with white pebbly sharkskin which shows through diamond shapes left open under silk cord which wraps handle. Metal band at base of hilt and metal cap at its end have relief casting of leaves and blossoms, and a bronze casting of blossoms is caught under black cord wrapping handle, oval sword guard has cut out relief of branches and blossoms, with holes on either side large enough to allow dirk to pass through. (b) dirk, long thin blade set into brass handle with cast relief of heron standing in stream with incised bushes around. Japanese calligraphy on other side of handle. (c) scabbard, slightly curved to fit blade. Wood covered with fine grained leather with narrow black band, horn? at mouth and another at top of slit pocket where dirk slides in. Pocket groove on one side near top to accommodate dirk, and semi-circular black piece of carved horn on opposite side, threaded through with flat braided black silk cord to tie scabbard to belt

Slot on upper side of handle along length to slide barrel in and support bayonet. Marks: (a) engraved atop blade, "Culle Fevrier 1872", serial no., "T60071" (b) engraved atop blade, "Lt. Etienne Juin 1871", serial no., "L78693". Scabbards, steel, formed to fit the shape of the blades, with round knob at tip and small square loop of steel for belt soldered near mouth of each. Marks: near mouth opposite loop, serial no. "X77249", near mouth opposite loop, serial no. "S5181", and "*" and "F".

Blade guard, cast of brass with raised curlicue design, turns upward at sides, handle tip of cast brass with similar design and small lug with hole through at one side Note: blade guard loose; wooden handle cracked along length; blade pitted. (b) scabbard, narrow and straight, made of two pieces of wood held together by two rings of heavy cast brass with raised floral motifs, becoming oval medallions on one side with cast relief of dragon like figures. Cast brass bands at mouth and tip repeat dragon floral motif of other two bands and have floral motif cut through exposing pebbly stone inlay in wood. Brass ring near top with small brass loop on one side.
