Description: A long straight knife with fluted wooden handle and scabbard ornately trimmed with brass. (a) dagger, short, narrow, pointed, double edged steel blade with small, dark, fluted wooden handle. Blade guard, cast of brass with raised curlicue design, turns upward at sides, handle tip of cast brass with similar design and small lug with hole through at one side Note: blade guard loose; wooden handle cracked along length; blade pitted. (b) scabbard, narrow and straight, made of two pieces of wood held together by two rings of heavy cast brass with raised floral motifs, becoming oval medallions on one side with cast relief of dragon like figures. Cast brass bands at mouth and tip repeat dragon floral motif of other two bands and have floral motif cut through exposing pebbly stone inlay in wood. Brass ring near top with small brass loop on one side.

Description: A very thin knife with ebony handle like rifle butt and wooden scabbard wrapped with bands of black cord. (a) dirk, short, narrow, pointed steel blade with reverse curve to sharp shoulder on under side of hilt. Small carved ebony handle shaped like a rifle butt, with carved band of scallops and diamond shapes around middle. Two decorative notches carved across butt of handle. Note: handle checked along length. (b) scabbard, small, simple and straight, carved of two pieces of wood with triangular opening at mouth. Top carved to curve downward on one side to accommodate shoulder of blade. Girded with four double bands of finely braided cord, evenly spaced along length, and a fifth triple band at top beneath shoulder. Note: top fibre hands loose and slide up and down.

Description: Knife with carved pistol grip handle and flame like carved piece at mouth of wooden scabbard. (a) knife, thin, curved, pointed steel blade with handle carved of greenish tortoiseshell ? shaped like a simple pistol grip. Deep single groove incised at each side at top near hilt. Blade joined to handle with roughly formed collar of grey metal. Note: hairline cracks in handle along grain, blade pitted and rusted. (b) scabbard, simple, slightly curved, wood with hoof like ebony tip. Band of tortoiseshell ? at opening carved in shape of flame or flowing leaf sticking out to one side. Round hole drilled through top, five thin lines incised across wood spaced evenly along length of scabbard. Small patches of glossy black material in a few places, and a black colour in the grain of the wood indicate that the wood may have been once enamelled black

Dimensions: 7.4 x 66.6 cm

Description: A Japanese samurai sword with black cord handle and black scabbard. (a) sword, long curved steel blade connected at hilt with brass to wooden handle covered with white pebbly sharkskin which shows through diamond shapes left open under silk cord which wraps handle. Metal band at base of hilt and metal cap at its end have relief casting of leaves and blossoms, and a bronze casting of blossoms is caught under black cord wrapping handle, oval sword guard has cut out relief of branches and blossoms, with holes on either side large enough to allow dirk to pass through. (b) dirk, long thin blade set into brass handle with cast relief of heron standing in stream with incised bushes around. Japanese calligraphy on other side of handle. (c) scabbard, slightly curved to fit blade. Wood covered with fine grained leather with narrow black band, horn? at mouth and another at top of slit pocket where dirk slides in. Pocket groove on one side near top to accommodate dirk, and semi-circular black piece of carved horn on opposite side, threaded through with flat braided black silk cord to tie scabbard to belt

Description: Japanese samurai sword with blue silk cord wrapped handle and black enamelled scabbard: (a) sword, long, slightly curved, steel blade joined to hilt with wide copper band. Wooden handle wrapped with blue silk cord with pebbly white sharkskin showing through diamond-shaped openings in wrapping. Metal cap at end of handle with relief of squatting figure reading scroll. Small cast figures of two deer caught beneath cord on either side of handle. Metal band at base of handle with relief of gilded figure in reed boat. Rectangular sword guard with cast relief of chrysanthemums and butterfly with holes cut through each side to accommodate small dirk handle. (b) dirk, steel bladed with copper handle with relief casting of brass dragon on one side. (c) scabbard, slightly curved wood covered with black enamel containing green flecks, blunt end, top of scabbard has slot on one side leading to pocket in scabbard to accommodate small dirk. Opposite side from slot has semi-circular horn ? lug threaded with a length of black silk cord. Note: small band at top of dirk pocket missing, enamel cracked and peeling in many places, especially near top, semi-circular lug loose.

Title: Fighting Sword

Date: 1800 – 1900

Dimensions: 7.0 x 6.5 x 72.1 cm

Description: A Japanese samurai sword with dirk and brown scabbard. (a) sword, long curved steel blade attached by brass collar to hilt. Handle of wood with pebbled texture of sharkskin applied and showing through diamond shaped openings left in decorative wrapping with leather strips over handle. Metal cap at end of handle has low relief casting of gilded dragonfly on one corner, a small bronze insect is caught below the leather wrapping on either side of the handle. Rectangular sword guard at hilt has incised design and vestiges of gold painted design with a decorative opening either side. (b) dirk, short narrow blade set into metal handle with inlay of bronze in shape of stem with leaves and two seed pods on one side, fits into slit in top of scabbard. Note: part of inlay missing. (c) scabbard, hollow wood shaped to fit the blade and covered with finely textured brown leather. Slots on either side near hilt are banded at top with smooth black strip, wood?, horn?, and further down as well, where dirk enters. Ornate metal cap at tip extends in a strip 16.0 cm along back edge and 5.0 cm along front edge with narrow metal band around scabbard 10.0 cm from tip. Small gilded dragonfly on one corner of cap at tip.

History / Biographical: Major Wharton Richard Tweedy, 1889-1965, was a soldier, mountaineer, outfitter and packtrain operator, and served as secretary-treasurer and Camp Manager for the Alpine Club of Canada between 1929 and 1942. Tweedy was responsible for setting up the camp facility for the 1943 Military Instruction Camp at Little Yoho Valley

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of Tweedy's photographs of Alpine Club of Canada annual summer camps; ACC members and activities, 1928-1946; camp packing activities, 1935; military camps; Stanley H. Mitchell and Mitchell's grave stone. Album is photographs of Little Yoho Valley Military Instruction Camp, July-August 1943; mainly horse packing and snow and ice training views, some by the National Film Board of Canada (possibly Harry Rowed and Lt.
