- A pair of speed skates with black leather boots on blades, complete with leather blade guards. Note: the skates and guards are attached, by four plastic ties, to a piece of wallboard painted white on the front and sides; the back is unpainted. The wallboard has two holes on the top so it can be hung on the wall. Stanley’s medals are also attached to the wallboard by one screw. They are on a shield-shaped, velvet-covered piece of wood. The leather boots are made from kangaroo hide, and are 14.0cm high, 29.0cm long and 8.50cm wide, laced. There are 16 metal-ringed eyelets on each side; the skates do not have their original laces; the laces are brand new and white. The boots have a wool-lined tongue, leather reinforcement bands behind the eyelets, two diagonal pieces of woven twill fabric lining (3.50cm wide), starting at the eyelets to the heel to reinforce the leather and support the ankle, and there is also a piece of woven twill fabric around the top of the boot (8.0cmx1.50cm wide). On the left boot (b), viewer’s left, there is a new piece of leather (6.0cmx4.0cm wide) added to line and reinforce the eyelets and top of the boot, and a new piece of leather added to the heel and back of the boot (10.0cm x 5.5cm wide). On the right boot (a), viewer’s left, there a piece of new leather added to reinforce the eyelets (3.0cm longx3.0cm at its widest). There is also a piece of new leather (12.0cm long x 6.50 wide) added to the heel and back of the boot to reinforce it. The blades are attached to the boot by a piece of flat metal (with six nails which have flared edges and are then tamped down to reinforce them on the inside of the sole of the boot) to the heel of the boot and a sole piece of flat metal by 10 nails which have flared edges and are then tamped down to reinforce them on the inside of the sole of the boot. The distance between the heel and sole piece is 9.50cm at its longest. Also on the tip of the toes there is piece of metal attaching the metal sole piece to the tubular blade with two nails; it is soldered to the blade. The are two metal funnel tubes connecting the metal footpieces to the blade; the one on the heel fits into the metal heel piece; the one on the flat part of the foot and toes fans out at the top and is attached by 10 nails (mentioned previously). Stamped on the inside edge is “J.E. STRAUSS ST. PAUL MINN.” . The metal tubular blades are 37.5cm long. There are two sturdy, brown leather skateguards on the skates. They are 39.5cm long, 4.5cm wide, and 0.80 in depth. They are canoe-shaped, stitched with industrial white thread; each guard had two leather straps to attach them to the blades, but the left front (guards are on the skates) one on the right guard is missing; the metal piece that the grommet fitted on to secure the guard is still in place on viewer’s right. The two straps on the right guard have been replaced by new beige leather straps (8.0cmx2.0wide x0.20cm deep.
