Item consists of one 16 mm motion picture pertaining to the 1958 Banff Winter Carnival and accompanying activities. Includes footage of a costume party/dance, costume ski race/ obstacle course, ski jumping at Mt. Norquay, the Carinval Queen, and the crowds gathered on the Bow River beside the bridge.
The original label on the case reads "Title: Banff Winter Carnival 1958, Camera B. Engler, Date: 1958, B&W, Footage: 300 ft."
In case of viewing request: Recommend issuing caution to viewers, specifically pertaining to sequences from the dance [00:01:06 to 01:00:11] as they contain graphic use of blackface, cultural appropriation, and misogynistic scenes.
File consists of a scrapbook pertaining to the winter sports career of Bagley's niece Syd Brewster (Graves). Includes newspaper clippings, telegrams, advertisements, and pamphlets about the Banff Winter Carnival, competitive skating, and employment at the Chateau Frontenac winter sports instructors.
Raphel (Ray) Bagley, 1880-1973, was a rancher and guide in the Red Deer, Onion Lake and Coleman districts of Alberta, Canada. Bagley came to the Lacombe district of Alberta in 1892. He homesteaded and ranched while guiding with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and conducting private trail rides throughout the southern Rockies from Waterton Lakes National Park to Banff National Park. Bagley wrote poems on western and trail riding themes, self-publishing a volume titled "Those Other Days" in 1969.

Banff Winter Carnival, also known as Winter Sports of the Canadian Rockies, was the first post-war winter sports programme held in Banff, Alberta. The organization had Banff directors, Calgary directors and Directors-at-large from Alberta and outside the province. A wide variety of social and sports events took place under the organization's direction.
