An irregularly oval- shaped serving platter with the shape forming a handle at each end. The tray is white with a double gold band outlining the perimeter and two sprays of flowers spaced evenly at each side. A small garland of flowers is at each end and a spray of flowers rests in the centre of the platter. A leaf-like scroll pattern which decorates the handles are accented in gold. The bottom of the platter is slightly elevated. The platter is marked “Davenport, Longport, Staffordshire”.

The outside edge of the doily is also scalloped.

A needlepoint sampler, in many colours, done in cross-stitch on loosely woven ecru linen. The sampler has a double-stitched border with stitched bars between each row of letters (A-Z) beginning with capital letters, followed by numerals from 1 to 10, then lower case letters (a-z), then numerals from 1 to 6, then large capital letters (A-F), and ending with “Serena Matilda Potts 1822.” The piece was originally framed in a simple brown wood frame with a parallel line (wood grain?) texture. The paper backing has “Serena Potts’ work born 1812” handwritten and a “Royal Picture Gallery” (Calgary, Alberta) framer’s sticker.

Handle is straight flattened piece of wood which was once painted green as evidenced by traces of green colour in grain. Handle passes through round opening in hatchet head and is tied on with a thong of buckskin. A strip of flannel material is tied at base of handle with one end hanging loose.
