Calgary Power changed its name to TransAlta Utilities in 1981. With a service area that had outgrown
Calgary decades earlier, the company's new name reflected its province-wide operation. By 1985,
TransAlta provided 81 percent of the province's electricity needs. TransAlta Utilities Corporation is the
largest investor-owned electric utility in Canada. TransAlta supplies electric energy to over 630,000
customers, which amounts to approximately 70 percent of Alberta's electricity consumption.
