- A Chinese gold scale (a) and case (b). a) A scale with a long thin rod made from gibbon bone with a scale marked along its length with small dots. A brass pan is suspended by a black thread through a hole at the blunt end of the rod. There is a single thread at 9.5 cm from the blunt end that acts as a fulcrum to hang the rod. b) A violin-shaped case made of carved bamboo that is hinged with brass at the end of the stem. A braided rattan ring slides down the stem to secure it when closed. There are carved areas insidethe case to fit the pan, rod and weight. The case is marked with a symbol carved into the outside. There is also a red and white paper inside with Chinese characters and “Ex.B Harry Sam” handwritten.

(b) single pearl, 2.4x .5 x .4 , small rounded tapered ellipse of gold with tiny seed pearl , .2 cm dia set into bevelled hole at centre, hollow. Stamped on back "14k" and torch hallmark. (c) same as (b) without pearl, 1.9 x .4 x .2, die struck. Hook clasp has double legs but joined by its curve into single hook. Period 1890 - 1915. - Maroon leather case with green satin velvet lining holds combination altimeter barometer of pocket watch like design. Brass casing and suspension loop. Casing rim ridged for gripping and rotation of altitude dial, inner dial, under crystal, is fixed and indicates barometric pressure in inches of mercury. Instrument is an aneroid barometer and needle varies with changes in atmospheric pressure, whether by change of altitude or change of weather. On dial face are following marks "rain change fair...compensated. Harrison & Co. Montreal, Made in England". On back of instrument casing is screw adjustment to correct for local conditions. Barometric pressure range is 17 to 31, altitude 0 to 16,000 feet.
