History / Biographical
Caroline Hinman, 1884-1966, was a trip/tour leader who worked out of Summit, New Jersey, USA. Hinman was first introduced to the Canadian Rockies in 1913, attending several early Alpine Club of Canada camps. For almost every summer following until ca.1960, she conducted pack trips and tours throughout the Rockies, chiefly in the area between Mount Assiniboine, British Columbia, and Jasper, Alberta. During winters, her parties travelled widely in Europe, Asia and Africa. Starting in the 1940s, Hinman offered a wide variety of motor and rail trips through the Rockies, fishing expeditions in British Columbia, as well as camping trips. Hinman's motto, "off the beaten track," became the hallmark of her adventures.

Fonds pertains to Hinman's career and travels in the Canadian Rockies and consists of I. Photograph albums; II. Motion pictures; III. Photographs (prints, lantern slides, 35mm transparencies); and IV. Textual records.
Photographs and motion pictures pertain to mountain tours and trips led by Hinman, 1913-1960. Content includes Hinman, her associates and clients, activities and camps, and Banff and area and Rocky Mountain scenics.
Textual records, 1915-1960, include diaries, notebooks, manuscripts, trip accounts, advertising materials, and other material. One of the diaries refers to an early trip (1915) with Mary Jobe and Curly Phillips, Robson Pass. The tour literature includes form letters, pamphlets, etc. containing itineraries for most of Hinman's trips in the Canadian Rockies.

History / Biographical
Dorothy Cranstone, 1904-1996, was a businesswoman and hotel worker at Banff, Alberta. Cranstone worked at the Banff Springs Hotel, 1929-1940, as Assistant Housekeeper, and later as Housekeeper at the Mount Royal Hotel. She went on to operate a gift shop in the Mount Royal Hotel. For many years, Cranstone was companion to Pearl (Brewster) Moore and later to Pat Brewster. She also worked for the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies as custodian of the Moore Home and as museum hostess.

Textual records include cards and letters from Peter and Catharine Whyte, 1947-1966; visitors to the Moore House, 1975-1981; Moore House visitors book, 1974-1983; transcript of Philip Moore 1903 trip diary (holograph and typescript) by Dorothy Cranstone; clippings, 1937-1983, re Pat Brewster, Dorothy Cranstone, Mount Royal Hotel fire and Jim Brewster home; ephemera regarding events attended by Cranstone, including Royal Visit to the Banff Springs Hotel, 1939, Gracie Fields Concert at the Banff Springs Hotel, 1940, and H. R. H. Princess Margaret Rose's visit, 1958. Textual records also include business/financial records for the gift shop operated by Cranstone, 1949-1974; records related to the publication and distribution of Pat Brewster's books, 1983-1987; correspondence records, 1962-1996; legal and business records concerning power of attorney as well as the dispersal of Cranstone's property and estate, 1980-1998. Miscellaneous items pertaining to Pat Brewster include clippings and interview transcripts.

History / Biographical
Nicholas Everard Morant, 1910-1999, was a professional photographer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was a Canadian commercial photographer of international repute and Canada's premier railway photographer of the 20th century.
Morant was born at Kamloops, British Columbia, the son of Francis and Mollie Morant. After attending the University School at Victoria, Morant served as Special Photographer to the CPR from 1929 to 1935 and again from 1944 to 1981. From 1935 to 1939, he was a cameraman for the Winnipeg Free Press, and from 1940 to 1944 worked with the Wartime Information Branch of the federal government (later to be known as the National Film Board Stills Division).
Morant had a prolific career as a freelance commercial, portrait, magazine, landscape and documentary photographer. His work appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Time, Life, Liberty, Saturday Evening Post, (Toronto) Star Weekly, Northern Sportsman, Reader's Digest, Country Guide, The Standard, National Home Monthly, Canadian Photography, Outdoor Canada, National Geographic, the Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, New York Daily News, and the two Canadian Pacific Railway magazines, The Spanner and Rail News.
Two wartime images were featured on postage stamps, while three landscape views appeared on Canadian $10, $50 and $100 bills. His images were also used for corporate annual reports, postcards, brochures, calendars and advertisements. From the 1950s to 1980s Morant gave public slide shows of his work, two of the most popular being "A Talk Without Words" and "The World At Your Feet".
Morant married Ivy May "Willie" Young in 1936 when he was a photographer with the Winnipeg Free Press. Beginning in 1929, and until the end of her life, Morant's travelling and working companion was his wife, "Willie," 1910-1986.

History / Biographical
The CP Rail company logo was changed in 1968 to remove the image of a beaver which was previously included. The logo was changed again slightly in 1987; however, as Nicholas Morant retired from Canadian Pacific in 1981, these photos very likely depict the "new" CP Rail logo of 1968, providing an approximate date when these photos were taken.

Consists of 9 transparency photographs (colour) and 44 negative photographs (colour, b&w). Content pertains to locomotives and box cars with new CP Rail logo. Locations include Gleichen AB, Spiral Tunnels BC and Vancouver(?) BC, Middleton Bridge and Horseshoe Lake. Photograph groups are labelled according to specific content/locations.
