History / Biographical
The Banff Zoo operated as a tourist attraction from about 1905 until 1937, when it was shut down due to concerns about animal cruelty. While it was open, the Banff Zoo held monkeys, cougars, a polar bear named "Buddy" [acquired in 1907], two bear cubs from 1915 onwards, and various other wildlife.

File consists of one album containing 35 black and white postcards and 1 colour postcard. Contents pertain to wildlife in the Rocky Mountains, including moose, bears, big horn sheep, buffalo, cougars, deer and elk, at least some of which were held in the Banff Zoo. File also contains images of Lethbridge [ca. 1909], Col. Cyril Childe [ca. 1920], Mt. Rundle, Niagara Canyon and other untitled views of the Canadian Rockies. One image depicting Lethbridge is dated 1909, stamped and annotated.

Title is the annotation on the back of the postcard written by Catharine Robb Whyte. This image was part of the Recognizing Relations project, an archives initiative undertaken from 2014-2023 to name Indigenous people in photographs held by the Whyte Museum Archives.
Content Details
Eliza Hunter donated her collection of photographs to the archives in 1970, most images in the collection have annotations by Catharine Robb Whyte, which likely means Catharine sat down with Eliza and asked her to identify the relatives and Stoney community members who appear in the photographs.
