History / Biographical: The Wardle family was comprised of husband and wife, James Morey Wardle (June 26,1888 - May 18,1971) and Maud Leette (Roney) Wardle (May 24,1889 - December 1,1969), and their one child, Dorothy Hope Wardle (May 23,1919 - July 20,2003). James Wardle, born in Chiliwack, British Columbia, was a civil engineer and public servant. He was the Superintendent of Banff National Park from 1918-1921, Chief Engineer for Parks Canada from 1921-1935, and Deputy Minister of the Interior from 1935-1936. He is primarily known as a highway design engineer, particularly for building the Banff-Windermere, Banff-Lake Louise, and Banff-Jasper highways. He was a councillor for the Municipality of Rockcliffe Park in Ontario and he was the President of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies in Banff from 1925-1929. Mount Wardle in Vermillion was named after him in 1921. James married Leette on November 4, 1913, with whom he had one child, Dorothy. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy (also known as Dot and Dorie) grew up in Banff, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario, due to her father's position with the federal government. She was educated at the Mountain School in Banff and at the Elmwood School in Ottawa. All three family members were graduates of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. James graduated in 1912 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Leette graduated with a Bachelor's degree, and in 1942, Dorothy also earned a Bachelor's degree. Dorothy was prominent in student life and active in athletics. In 1941, Dorothy became the first woman elected as President of the Alma Mater Society and during her academic career, Dorothy was a member of the Levana Intercollegiate Debative, University Centenary Committee, and Queen’s War Aid Commission. Dorothy spent her career as a freelance writer however, upon graduation she served as the first Secretary-In-Charge of Records at Carleton College (now Carleton University) from 1942-1944 in Ottawa and in the mid-1950s worked as a secretary for the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary. Dorothy pursued a lifelong interest in traveling, art, and antiques. Although she was fiercely proud and protective of Banff and the Park, and remained a volunteer and patron of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Dorothy eventually settled in Sidney, British Columbia and shared an apartment with Sheila Iris Ritchie, with whom Dorothy travelled extensively. After her death in 2003, Dorothy, "Dorie," was laid to rest alongside her parents in the Old Banff Cemetery.

History / Biographical: Dorothy V. Whyte, b.1893, was a Canadian Pacific Railway employee at Banff, Alberta, Canada, until 1939. Whyte came to Banff from the Yukon and was first employed by the Banff Springs Hotel in 1920. She worked as an Information Clerk and later Special Representative for the Canadian Pacific Railway until 1939. She worked in Vancouver until 1963, returning to Banff where she became involved in local affairs before returning to West Vancouver in 1969. While living at the coast, Whyte frequently visited the Mount Assiniboine area and maintained close ties with Banff. Dorothy Whyte is not related to the White/Whyte family of Banff.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of: I. Personal papers, business papers and ephemera mainly concerning Whyte's involvement in publicity and hospitality with Canadian Pacific, primarily with the Banff Springs Hotel. II. Correspondence and writings resulting from her friendship with Peter and Catharine Whyte and her interest in Banff affairs; correspondents include Catharine Robb Whyte, Jon Whyte and Erling Strom. History / Biographical: Howard Douglas, 1852-1929, was Superintendent of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada from 1896 until 1910 and Commissioner of Dominion Parks, 1910-1911. Douglas was involved in acquiring buffalo from the Pablo-Allard herd for Canada. The round-up commenced in 1907 and was completed in 1912 with a total of 716 animals purchased. In 1910, Douglas was instrumental in organizing a hunt of old bulls on the reserve. The scheme was quashed by the Montana Attorney General

History / Biographical: Erich Pistor was born in 1873 in Graz, Austria. He studied History of Arts and Law and earned a doctor of Law degree in 1898. Pistor worked at the Chamber of Commerce in Graz and attended the 1899 International Congress in Philadelphia and was subsequently called to the Chamber of Commerce in Vienna. He published his first book "Der Exportförderungsdienst des Handelsmuseums in Philadelphia" in 1900. Pistor travelled through Siberia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce in 1901 and 1902 and wrote "Durch Sibirien in die Südsee" in 1903. Pistor organized many exhibitions for the Chamber of Commerce within Europe and in Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Pistor became Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Austrian-British Committee, and President of the Austrian-Greek Society. Pistor spoke twelve languages.; Erich Pistor met Conrad Kain in 1904 when Pistor hired Kain as a guide. Kain was again hired by Pistor in 1905 as a guide on Pistor's honeymoon trip. In 1908 Conrad Kain moved to Vienna and studied English with Pistor's wife and in 1909, Pistor contacted the CPR and the Alpine Club of Canada to secure summer employment for Kain as a guide with the ACC.; Pistor's first wife, Sara, was a British citizen with whom he had three children. Two of these children died in WWII in Stalingrad and Sara died in 1930.; In 1932 Pistor married his second wife and they had a son Gerhart, born 1938. Pistor and his family fled Vienna in 1944 during the bombing of the city and lived in Prein/Rax, then Reichenau. Dr. Erich Pistor died in 1954.

History / Biographical: Duncan W. Johnson, 1879-1961, was a civil servant at Banff and Jasper, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario. Between 1911 and 1917 Johnson, as Chief Accountant of Parks Branch, introduced a bookkeeping and accounting system into the Western National Parks and was assigned as acting Superintendent to Jasper National Park. During the years 1917-1920, Johnson conducted the first national parks publicity campaign which popularized the national parks with the prairie provinces and promoted the national parks as an auto tourist destination. In his efforts to expand tourist traffic to western Canada and the national parks, Johnson's plans included collaboration between Glacier National Park in the United States and Waterton Lakes National Park.

Scope & Content: Fonds includes correspondence, resume, etc., 1915-1934, describing duties as accountant, national park superintendent and publicist; agreement 1956, between Johnson and Minister of Labour re historical editorials on the Labour Movement in Canada; newsclippings, 1917-1919, pertaining to motion picture, National Parks publicity, lectures and Johnson's marriage to Eleanor McLennan. History / Biographical: Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, 1911-ca.1958; professional papers, 1901-1957; letters, 1941-1961; scrapbook, 1923-1972; and newsclippings, 1969.; Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. History / Biographical: Edward John (Ted) Hart, b.1946, is a historian, writer and Director Emeritus at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Hart is author of numerous books on aspects of Canadian Rockies history, including guiding and outfitting, the Brewster family, the CPR and tourism, Carl Rungius, Greyhound Lines of Canada, Jimmy Simpson, the Banff Springs Hotel golf course, the Bow Valley, and other topics. Hart was archivist at the Archives of the Canadian Rockies, 1972-1976 and Executive Director of the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation, 1976-2008. In 2008 in began semi-retirement in the position of Head Archivist, and fully retired in 2010. He served as a director of the Banff Community Society, 1979-1983; as a member of the Banff School Board, 1983-1986; on the Banff Municipal Committee, 1986- 1989; and in municipal office as councillor and then mayor 1990 to 1998. Hart attended the founding meeting of the Association of Canadian Archivists in Edmonton, and helped create the Archives Society of Alberta in 1981. He was the ASA's founding president. Hart is the recipient of a number of awards including Fellow of the Association of Canadian Archivists, Alberta Achievement Award, Excellence Category for “Historical Preservation, Culture and the Literary Arts”, Archives Society of Alberta, Honorary Lifetime Member and the Alberta Historical Society award.

Scope & Content: The fonds consists of personal, professional and political correspondence, research and publication correspondence, research materials, drafts and illustrations related to E.J. (Ted) Hart’s personal life, professional career, writing career and political career from 1971 to present. For the writing material, which makes up the majority of the fonds, it is organized on the basis of the publication title under which it was carried out. The political section includes papers leading to the incorporation of Banff as a national park municipality in 1990 and records of its first years of operation as an incorporated town, including the creator’s role in these matters. Of notable interest in the writing files are the interviews and correspondence with pioneers of the Banff area, in particular those used for "Diamond Hitch", "The Brewster Story : from packtrain to tour bus" and "Jimmy Simpson". The political files include background reports and handbill drafts that are not part of the official record kept by the Town of Banff, which may make them rare, if not unique.

History / Biographical: E. O. (Edward Oliver) Wheeler, 1890-1962, was a Canadian surveyor, soldier and mountaineer. Wheeler was born in Ottawa, the son of A. O. (Arthur Oliver) Wheeler, Dominion Land Surveyor and founder of the Alpine Club of Canada. E. O. Wheeler served in the Royal Engineers in World War I and received the Military Cross in 1916 and the Legion of Honour (France). In 1941 he was appointed Surveyor-General of India and in 1943 was knighted by King George VI. During World War II, he served as Director of the Frontier Circle of the Survey of India. Wheeler retired to Lavington, British Columbia in 1947. Throughout his life, Wheeler was involved in world mountaineering. He worked on the mapping of the 1922 expedition of Mount Everest and was active in the Alpine Club of Canada, serving as its President from 1950 to 1954

History / Biographical: Edwin W. Mills, 1899-1979 was a resident of Hamilton, Ontario. He attended Ridley College and the Royal Military College, serving overseas from 1917 to 1919 in the Royal Flying Corps and the RAF. Mills was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada from 1935-1953, attending the ACC Assiniboine Camp in 1935 as well as the first camps at the Columbia Icefields and the Bugaboos. Mills frequently hiked at Lake O'Hara, Emerald Lake, and Bow Lake. In 1937, Mills made several ascents on Ellesmere and Baffin Islands with the Canadian Arctic Foundation.

History / Biographical: Eliza Hunter Wîchîyânâgish (Young Woman), probably born in the early 1900s, lived in Morley most of her life. She attended the Calgary Stampede and Banff Indian Days regularly, and was married to Judas Hunter (maiden name unknown). Collection of 16 photograph prints donated by Eliza in 1970 to the Archives of the Canadian Rockies, annotations on the backs on some written by Catharine Robb Whyte.

History / Biographical: Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rummel, 1897-1980, was a lodge owner and operator at Banff National Park, Alberta and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. Rummel was born Elisabeth von Rummel to an aristocratic German family. With her mother and sisters, she ranched near Millarville, Alberta, after being stranded there during the First World War. In 1938, Lizzie moved to the mountains and became involved in early ski and backcountry operations. Her forty-two year career in the mountains included: working at Mount Assiniboine Lodge until 1942; managing Skoki Lodge and, at various times, Temple Chalet and Lake Louise Ski Lodge, ca.1943-1950; owning and operating Sunburst Lake Camp, 1950-1970; and working as assistant and oral history interviewer at the Archives of the Canadian Rockies (now the Archives of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies) from 1966 to 1980. Lizzie was active in the town affairs of Canmore, Alberta, where she lived, as well as in various conservation and recreation organizations. She became a member of the Order of Canada in 1980.

History / Biographical: Grace Charlton (née Wheatley) was born 1912 in Bankhead, Alberta to Alice and Frank Wheatley. The family moved to Banff in the early 1920s when the Bankhead mine closed. Following graduation from school in Banff, Grace attended Henderson Business School in Calgary completing secretarial courses. She returned to Banff to work for J.D. Hansen.; Elmer Charlton was born in Spokane, Washington, U.S.A. in 1911. Elmer completed his schooling in Calgary when his family moved there from Spokane. Elmer worked for his brother Malcolm before moving to Banff in the 1930s to work for his brother in-law George Brewster, who owned Brewster Skyline Tours. Elmer worked for George Brewster driving the daily bus from Banff to Calgary. On his return trips from Calgary, Elmer delivered the Calgary Herald newspaper to homes and businesses along the way. Elmer met Grace while he was working for Brewster and they married in 1935. Grace and Elmer had two children, Ken (b.1939) and Gary (b.1942).; Growing up in Banff, Grace was an active skier and she and Elmer became involved with the Ski Runners of the Canadian Rockies and helped build the first lodge and rope tow. Both Grace and Elmer held executive positions with the Ski Runners of the Canadian Rockies and Elmer was a judge at the ski-jump event for the North American Ski championships, 1948-1950. Grace and Elmer were also active golfers. Grace served on the ladies' executive of the Banff Springs Golf Club and won many club tournaments. Elmer was also an active member of the Banff Springs Golf Club, holding executive positions with the men's club at various times. Elmer was a member of the Banff Curling Club and both he and Grace were involved with the Banff Winter Carnival in the early years. Elmer worked on the construction of the Highway between the park gates and Banff and also found work on the sets of a number of movies filmed in Banff. Elmer worked on the soundstages, appeared as an extra and was a driver for the casts of the films "Lassie Come Home", "North West Stampede", "Saskatchewan", and "River of No Return." In 1949 Elmer and Grace built Charlton's Cedar Court, the first year round motel. It opened with four units and expanded to twenty units before their son Gary took over management of the motel in 1969. Grace and Elmer became members of the Banff Chamber of Commerce and Elmer served as president. Elmer was a life member of the Banff Kinsmen Club and Banff Rotary Club. Grace was a life member of the IODE and the Eastern Star Lodge. Grace died in 1998 and Elmer in 2000.
