- History / Biographical
- Mary Schaffer, 1861-1939, also known as Mary Schaffer Warren, was an American explorer, photographer and artist who visited the Canadian Rockies and Selkirk Mountains frequently beginning in 1888, finally settling in Banff, Alberta in 1912. Born Mary Townsend Sharples to moderately wealthy Quaker parents at West Chester, Pennsylvania, she first visited the Canadian Rockies and Selkirk Mountains in 1888 with her friend Mary Vaux. She returned the following year with her husband, Dr. Charles Schaffer, and until Charles died in 1903, the Schaffers travelled annually to the mountains to study botany. Using Dr. Schaffer's data and her drawings and photographs, Mary Schaffer and Stewardson Brown completed "Alpine flora of the Canadian Rocky Mountains" in 1907.
- Schaffer continued to travel in the Canadian mountains, often through remote regions. In 1908, she reached Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, and returned in 1911 to survey the region. "Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies," 1911, recounts her adventures of 1907 and 1908. Schaffer settled in Banff in 1912 and married her guide, Billy Warren, in 1915.

Literary manuscripts pertain to the Athabasca River, Maligne Lake, Howse, Yellowhead and Athabasca passes; hunting; Dr. Gilbert Atkin and Nurse Fulcher's medical mission to Ya Ha Tinda Ranch; Banff, Revelstoke BC, Saskatchewan River; Stoney Nakoda; Palliser Expedition; and Mary Schaffer life and activities.
- II. Photographs series consists of four sub-series: A. Lantern slides; B. Photograph albums; C. Negatives; D. Prints. Lantern slides pertain to Mary Schaffer's trips to Maligne Lake and Yellowhead Pass, mountain scenics, nature subjects (animals, birds, flowers); and includes Mary Schaffer's lantern slide presentations "In the Heart of the Canadian Rockies", accompanied by scripts; Philip Moore's Indigenous lecture series, mainly copies from books and other graphic sources; and Mary Schaffer's slides of China and Japan. Photograph albums, 1908-ca.1921, pertain mainly to trips in the Canadian Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, especially expeditions to the Yoho and Ptarmigan Valleys, Nakimu Caves, North Saskatchewan River, Wilcox Pass and Maligne Lake. Two albums pertain to travels in Mexico and Asia. Negatives pertain mainly to Schaffer's trips and explorations, Glacier House and environs, alpine flora and fauna, mountain views, portraits, Sampson Beaver family, 1902-1911.
- III. Other material series consists of diaries of Molly Adams, 1908, and Mrs. H. H. Sharples, 1911, and original manuscripts and published reports by other writers, 1895-1928.

- Nicholas Everard Morant, 1910-1999, was a professional photographer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was a Canadian commercial photographer of international repute and Canada's premier railway photographer of the 20th century.
- Morant was born at Kamloops, British Columbia, the son of Francis and Mollie Morant. After attending the University School at Victoria, Morant served as Special Photographer to the CPR from 1929 to 1935 and again from 1944 to 1981. From 1935 to 1939, he was a cameraman for the Winnipeg Free Press, and from 1940 to 1944 worked with the Wartime Information Branch of the federal government (later to be known as the National Film Board Stills Division).
- Morant had a prolific career as a freelance commercial, portrait, magazine, landscape and documentary photographer. His work appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Time, Life, Liberty, Saturday Evening Post, (Toronto) Star Weekly, Northern Sportsman, Reader's Digest, Country Guide, The Standard, National Home Monthly, Canadian Photography, Outdoor Canada, National Geographic, the Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, New York Daily News, and the two Canadian Pacific Railway magazines, The Spanner and Rail News.
- Two wartime images were featured on postage stamps, while three landscape views appeared on Canadian $10, $50 and $100 bills. His images were also used for corporate annual reports, postcards, brochures, calendars and advertisements. From the 1950s to 1980s Morant gave public slide shows of his work, two of the most popular being "A Talk Without Words" and "The World At Your Feet".
- Morant married Ivy May "Willie" Young in 1936 when he was a photographer with the Winnipeg Free Press. Beginning in 1929, and until the end of her life, Morant's travelling and working companion was his wife, "Willie," 1910-1986.

- The Ostheimer Expedition 1927 was a mountaineering and scientific expedition, led by Alfred J. Ostheimer III, 1908-1983, with fellow Harvard students John de Laittre II and W. R. Maclaurin, in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The party completed a nine week climbing and exploration trip described as "perhaps the greatest tour de force ever accomplished in a single season in the Canadian Rockies." Party members climbed thirty-five mountains, including twenty-eight first ascents, in the region between the Athabasca River and Tsar Creek.

- Parks Canada administers national parks in Canada. The agency has been administered by several government departments and undergone numerous name changes over the years. Most recently it was known as the Canadian Parks Service. Parks Canada is responsible for the administration of mountain parks and, in some cases, townsites within these parks. Until 1990, it administered the town of Banff in Banff National Park. Parks Canada provides a variety of services to visitors and residents pertaining to interpretive and visitor information; trail, resource and wildlife management; fire protection, mountaineering search and rescue and avalanche control; facilities and utilities; townsite services etc.

- History / Biographical
- Peter and Catharine Whyte were artists, photographers, outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, philanthropists and cultural workers at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Peter Whyte, 1905-1966, was born at Banff in 1905 to pioneer merchant Dave White and Annie (Curren) White. He was an accomplished skier and ski jumper and one of the region's first native-born painters with an intimate knowledge of the mountains and was an active photographer from ca.1920 until the 1950s. Peter Whyte studied art at the Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, 1923-1924, and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, 1925, where he met Catharine Robb. Catharine Robb Whyte, 1906-1979, was born in 1906 at Concord, Massachusetts and grew up amongst the wealth and creativity of the Robb and Morse families. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, 1925-1929.
- Following their marriage in 1930, the Whytes pursued a life of painting, photography, hiking, skiing and travelling. Their log home and studio in Banff became a focal point for their artist friends, Stoney Indians and local pioneers. Catharine shared Pete's involvement in skiing and hiking organizations and together they managed Skoki Lodge from 1932-1934. In following years, the Whytes travelled extensively. During the Second World War, Peter served in the reserve army, with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a photographer and, briefly, as an official war artist. Catharine continued to paint and maintain their home and, when possible, accompanied Pete to his military postings. In civilian life, Pete resumed his art career, explored new photographic techniques and sculpted.
- Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Whytes formulated plans for a foundation to preserve the art and history of the Canadian Rockies. Plans for a building to house an archives, public library and gallery were in preparation when Pete died in 1966. The Peter Whyte Foundation was named in his honour. Catharine immersed herself in the development of what is now the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, in the cultural community, painting, outdoor activity, travel and work with the Stoney First Nations. She became a more active photographer, recording her travels and outdoor pursuits. She served in an official capacity with numerous cultural and charitable organizations, was a patron to individuals studying art and music, and supported numerous causes relating to the Stoney First Nations. Catharine also supported causes related to multiculturalism, regional culture and recreation, and cancer research. Despite her modesty and often anonymous patronage of causes, Catharine was recognized with numerous awards and honours, including the Order of Canada in 1978. She died in Banff in 1979.

M36 and S37 consists of three series. Series I: Peter and Catharine Whyte, Series II: Robb and Morse families, Series III: White and Curren families. Within Series I, there are four Sub-series: Series: A. Catharine Robb Whyte papers; B. Peter Whyte papers; C. Peter and Catharine Whyte papers accessioned after 2017; D. - History / Biographical
- Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

- The Vaux family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were photographers, mountaineers and scientists. Mary M. Vaux, 1860-1940, George Vaux Jr., 1863-1927, and William S. Vaux Jr., 1872-1908, were the children of George Vaux (VIII) of Philadelphia. They were all involved in photography in the early 1880s and were members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia. All three were taking photographs when the family made its first trip west in 1885. The first Vaux family photographs of the Canadian mountain west were made in 1887 during a summer trip along the Canadian Pacific Railway to Glacier House in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia in 1887.
- The family made frequent visits to the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains over the next two decades to study the Illecillewaet and other glaciers, photograph, paint and climb. George's and Mary's photographic work centred on the mountain landscape, while William's concentrated upon the movement and physical features of glaciers. Due to the size of their large format cameras, the two brothers took most of the photographs during these trips and Mary was responsible for all of the printing. William Vaux died in 1908 and George did not return to the Canadian mountains after 1911; however, Mary Vaux Walcott returned to the region virtually every summer for over forty years. A detailed discussion of their activities is contained in "Legacy In Ice: The Vaux Family and the Canadian Alps," Whyte Foundation, Banff, 1983

July 11th. with desastrous results to one (MacCarthur, Foster, Carpe) and reaching Rush Pond with the other (Taylor, Lambart, Read) 12.30 midnight July 12, 60 miles by stream.

- File pertains to photographs - mostly prints, also negatives and one glass slide - of the Mount Logan Expedition of 1925. Photographs of the Mount Logan Expedition were mainly produced by H. F. Lambart; also some by A. H. MacCarthy. All images are housed in the original brown envelopes used by the ACC and contain typed notes on the exteriors. Topics include: Breakfast being prepaired by Andy Taylor in front of the tent at Rush Pond and before starting out on that hectic 32 mile trudge into McCarthy, being the closing act of the field activities of the Mt. Logan Expedition. Rush Pond left with all gear left behind (protem) on July 12 at 10.10 A.M. arriving McCarthy 1.30 A.M. July 13 ; The first negative of close up in camp by H.F.L. other by Taylor of first relays to the top of the Quartz Ridge, 1000 feet above the Cascade camp site ; The process by which, with a 700 foot alpine line we were able to get one of the hand sleds to the summit of the quartz ridge from the Cascades camp below ; Cache and group at the top of the quartz ridge. This point being about 1000 feet above Cascades ; This is a photograph looking straight down the Ogilvie glacier from a point 1000 feet above its head. Its confluence with the Logan is distinctly seen ; A mere spot in a world of ice, cascades camp as viewed from above from the summit of the Quartz Ridge. This photograph shows well the base of the cascades and the character of the glaciers entering the head of the Ogilvie Gl. ; From a rock ridge where Morgan hand enticed me one afternoon we got this of the top of St. Elias appearing through the clouds. Below the surface of the King Glacier, end of the south wall of King Trench on left ; Large scale map of coast showing Cordova, McCarthy and Logan ; H.F.L. Hall [extreme] right. centre L to R Carpe, MacCarthy Foster ; These pictures taken towards the south over a sea of clouds obscuring the Seward and Malaspina glaciers and all the surrounding peaks leaving the top of St. Elias alone sticking up. The peak of King Mt. not more than 5 miles distant all showing, the sea of clouds showing beyond. Note the South butress of King and long ridge leading from teh peak to the right being the south wall of the King Glacier. King Col, is just below the ridge facing the picture and decending from the summit in a jagged arete ; This the only photograph I have of "Windy Camp" (16800) taken looking northward up the ice slopes followed on the ascent. Left the S.W. spur of the Logan massif ; Plateau Camp at an elevation of 17500 ft approximately, is the camp from which Mt. Logan was climbed on the 23 of June. These pictures were taken on a clear morning and it is hard to explain the failure in the results obtained. The panorama shows the upper glacier plateau below the high summits of the massif. The photograph sweeps the northern horizon through about a half circle. Distant rangers shown are those of the walsh Glacier and west end of the glacier and mountain system between the base of Logan and Kluane Lake, 60 miles eastward.

Topics include: Going into our first camp on the bars of the Chitina River being a half days run from "Rush Pound," where we stopped and had lunch on the way in ; Packing up at Brysons, being the old camp ground of the Surveys (Barny Bryson) and from which point a trail leads out of the valley of the Chitina (rising 3000 ft) and leading to the head of the Young Creek. MacCarthy took this trail coming in coming out last summer after the reconnaissance. This is the 4th. camp out from McCarthy the next 16 miles to Short River ; Short river Camp, 5th camp out from McCarthy and only 7 miles out from Hubricks. Mountain in back on other side of Chitina Valley. Crossed Clear Water, Canon and Short river before reaching this camp ; Eastward up the valley of the Chitina Valley Tree islands and the morain covered toe of the Chitina Glacier showing. Hubricks Camp near point shown on left, just showing ; The Chitina Valley below Hubrick's Camp distant horizon being the toe of the Chitina Glacier. Mt. Logan would be, if visible, direct centre looking up Chitina Gl. ; Panorama taken from a point on the Chitina just off the N.W. corner of the Chitina Glacier toe, at an old Trig Sta. which seemed to be part of old base line. Shows the range on the south side of the Chitina Valley and the last straight down the valley of the Chitina ; All a little blurred as focus in error set at 15 yrd. Panorama of the range on the south side of the Chitina River Valley, from a point 1/3 mile east of Hubrick's Camp. Logan in distant centre in 433 & 434 [452 & 453] ; Laing in front of his dungeon (Pup Tent). The afternoon's careful inspection of Logan equipment ; Survey tripod on the bars below toe of Chitina Glacier to N.W. line of bace line poasts leading away to W. No end of base mark showing ; From the summit point of the Terminal morains of the Chitina Glacier looking straight west down the valley and showing the trench between the glacier and the N. wall of the valley up which the trail lead to the last point of horse transport, "Trail End" ; The group on the ice in front of "Trail end Camp" ; Ice of the Chitina completely covered with debris, from the shore line on the N. side looking forward to Chitina Point ; Walsh camp at the end of the Chitina Point, the side of an old survey camp of 1913, facing a stretch of water directly off the point, the junctions of the Chitina and Walsh Glaciers ; Group, as per preceding negative showing drift and exposed dry wood on beech, old shore of long since sunken lake.
