History / Biographical: Lawrence Grassi, 1890-1980, was a miner and mountaineer at Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Grassi was born in Falmenta, Italy and emigrated to Canada in 1912, working first as a section man for the Canadian Pacific Railway and from 1916 to 1945 as a miner for Canmore Mines. Grassi distinguished himself in solo mountain climbing and as an unofficial guide to many other mountaineers. Grassi is best remembered for trail building activities. J. S. Woodsworth led support for legislation to change the name of Twin Lakes in White Man Pass to Grassi Lakes in recognition of this work. As assistant warden at Lake O'Hara, British Columbia, Grassi upgraded and built numerous trails for which he received many honours in later life.

Also includes views of Lawrence Grassi, family and friends, ca.1880-ca.1970, and group of unidentified portraits, ca.1880- ca.1900. Transparencies are mainly unidentified colour mountain scenics. History / Biographical: Lillian Gest, 1897-1986, of Merion, Pennsylvania visited the Canadian Rockies almost every summer for sixty years, beginning in 1921. She was an active participant in "Off the Beaten Track" trips organized by Caroline Hinman between 1923 and 1933, in which young people camped, hiked, hunted and went horseback riding throughout the region between Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson. During the 1930s, Gest attended hikes of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and developed mountaineering skills at Alpine Club of Canada annual camps. Christian Hasler Jr. often served as her guide. Gest also belonged to the American Alpine Club, the Philadelphia Trails Club and the Lake O'Hara Trails Club. She spent considerable time in the Lake O'Hara region and wrote "History of Lake O'Hara" (1961), "History of Moraine Lake" (1970), and "History of Mount Assiniboine" (1979).

History / Biographical: Lloyd Harmon, 1914-2000, was a professional photographer who specialized in ski, action and scenic photography at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Harmon was a son of photographer Byron Harmon and worked in his father's business with his brother, Don Harmon, ca.1933-1941 and 1945-1954. During World War II, he served with the RCAF in Burma, Italy and North Africa. After leaving Banff, Harmon worked in the oil industry at Calgary. During the 1950s he married Elizabeth Ellwood. He retired to Canada's west coast.

Mainly scenic, skiing and documentary views of Banff and area, the Rocky Mountains and some other Alberta and British Columbia locations. He was also known as a big game hunter.

History / Biographical: Mary Schaffer, 1861-1939, also known as Mary Schaffer Warren, was an American explorer, photographer and artist who visited the Canadian Rockies and Selkirk Mountains frequently beginning in 1888, finally settling in Banff, Alberta in 1912. Born Mary Townsend Sharples to moderately wealthy Quaker parents at West Chester, Pennsylvania, she first visited the Canadian Rockies and Selkirk Mountains in 1888 with her friend Mary Vaux. She returned the following year with her husband, Dr. Charles Schaffer, and until Charles died in 1903, the Schaffers travelled annually to the mountains to study botany. Using Dr. Schaffer's data and her drawings and photographs, Mary Schaffer and Stewardson Brown completed "Alpine flora of the Canadian Rocky Mountains" in 1907.; Schaffer continued to travel in the Canadian mountains, often through remote regions. In 1908, she reached Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, and returned in 1911 to survey the region. "Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies," 1911, recounts her adventures of 1907 and 1908. Schaffer settled in Banff in 1912 and married her guide, Billy Warren, in 1915.

History / Biographical: Nicholas Everard Morant, 1910-1999, was a professional photographer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was a Canadian commercial photographer of international repute and Canada's premier railway photographer of the 20th century.; Morant was born at Kamloops, British Columbia, the son of Francis and Mollie Morant. After attending the University School at Victoria, Morant served as Special Photographer to the CPR from 1929 to 1935 and again from 1944 to 1981. From 1935 to 1939, he was a cameraman for the Winnipeg Free Press, and from 1940 to 1944 worked with the Wartime Information Branch of the federal government (later to be known as the National Film Board Stills Division).; Morant had a prolific career as a freelance commercial, portrait, magazine, landscape and documentary photographer. His work appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Time, Life, Liberty, Saturday Evening Post, (Toronto) Star Weekly, Northern Sportsman, Reader's Digest, Country Guide, The Standard, National Home Monthly, Canadian Photography, Outdoor Canada, National Geographic, the Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, New York Daily News, and the two Canadian Pacific Railway magazines, The Spanner and Rail News.; Two wartime images were featured on postage stamps, while three landscape views appeared on Canadian $10, $50 and $100 bills. His images were also used for corporate annual reports, postcards, brochures, calendars and advertisements. From the 1950s to 1980s Morant gave public slide shows of his work, two of the most popular being "A Talk Without Words" and "The World At Your Feet".; Morant married Ivy May "Willie" Young in 1936 when he was a photographer with the Winnipeg Free Press. Beginning in 1929, and until the end of her life, Morant's travelling and working companion was his wife, "Willie," 1910-1986.

History / Biographical: Norman Bethune Sanson, 1862-1949, was a naturalist, meteorologist and museum curator at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of a prominent clergyman, he developed a life-long interest in natural history as a boy. Sanson came west in 1885 to fight in the Riel Rebellion as a member of the Queen's Own Rifles.; In 1892, Sanson came to Banff as an accountant for the Sanitarium Hotel. He also did book-keeping for other local businesses and handled the town's weather reports. In 1896 he was appointed curator of the Park Museum and also worked as zookeeper for the Banff Zoo. From 1896 until 1931, Sanson was meteorological officer and curator of the Park Museum. In 1903 an observatory was built on Sulphur Mountain on a site chosen by Sanson. During the period 1903-1931, Sanson made one thousand ascents of Sulphur Mountain to collect weather records. In 1948, the Dominion Government acknowledged his many years of service by naming a peak on the mountain for him.; As a nature enthusiast, Sanson was well-known both in Banff and beyond. He was an avid collector of flora and fauna, both privately and through his job as museum curator. Sanson was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and the Banff Rotary Club. He was a warden of St. George's Anglican Church and a supporter of the Canadian Bible Society. He was active in community events such as the Banff Winter Carnival, for which he organized and led the snowshoeing events. An ardent mountain traveller, he enjoyed both hiking and snowshoeing. Following retirement, Sanson toured extensively on foot throughout Britain and Europe.

History / Biographical: Oscar Roe McComb, b. July 30, 1909, d. 1992, was born in Togo, Saskatchewan and moved to Victoria as a boy and then Vancouver, B.C. He was a musician, playing primarily brass and woodwinds, and his band played the Waterton Lakes, Lake Louise and Banff areas in the 1930s. McComb later played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He married Mae McComb, b. February 1911, d. 1954 on August 29, 1936 in Waterton Lakes. They had three children. Oscar Roe McComb took the photographs or accumulated the postcards and Mae McComb assembled the photograph albums. Oscar McComb remarried after the death of Mae.

History / Biographical: Percival Robert Lockie (known as P. R. or just Lockie), 14 August, 1900 - 8 March, 1976, was born in St. Helens, England and moved to B.C. with his family in 1909. His father, Robert, was already in Canada when Percy (as he’s listed on the Immigration form) came with his mother Ethel and sisters Elizabeth, Kathleen, and Janet on the Empress of Ireland. The ship departed from Liverpool and arrived in Quebec on 25 June with a final destination listed as Vancouver. He worked in Vancouver as a draftsperson for Dominion Engineering until at least 1921 before moving to Powell River. Upon arrival to Powell River he worked a wide variety of labour jobs, as well as various odd jobs like lifeguarding and as a tap dance teacher. His main occupation in town was as a draftsperson for the Powell River Company's pulp and paper mill until 1965. His work for the mill included measuring the snow pack at the head of Powell Lake, north of the town site, each May and September, which he did for over 30 years. Measurements were taken from half-way up a mountain at the north-east of Powell Lake, which Lockie and B. Stenberg are accredited with summiting first in 1952. Over the course of his life he climbed the mountain at least 75 times. While locally known as Lockie’s Table for most of his life, the mountain was officially unnamed. In the mid-1990s Powell River community members requested the B.C. Geographical Naming Office officially recognize the name Lockie’s Table, which they did in April 1997. According to the Naming Office, the name Lockie’s Table is affixed to the flat table-like plateau on the peak of the mountain, while the rest of the mass remains unnamed. He joined the B.C. Mountaineering Association in the 1920s and travelled, climbed, and photographed throughout the interior and northern B.C. area, mainly the Selkirk and Coastal Mountain ranges. He also spent time hiking in and around Banff National Park and both the B.C. and Alberta sides of the Rocky Mountains; Lake O'Hara was one of his favorite places and features prominently in his photographs.

History / Biographical: William S. Park, born ca.1865, was a professional photographer who came to Calgary, Alberta, Canada ca.1909, from Ontario. He was accompanied by his daughter, Hetty (Lolly) Park, 1888-1968, who worked as a secretary in Calgary. The Parks travelled extensively and attended Alpine Club of Canada camps, ca.19l0-1935. They were close friends with photographer Harry Pollard and his family.

He was an accomplished skier and ski jumper and one of the region's first native-born painters with an intimate knowledge of the mountains and was an active photographer from ca.1920 until the 1950s. Peter Whyte studied art at the Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, 1923-1924, and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, 1925, where he met Catharine Robb. Catharine Robb Whyte, 1906-1979, was born in 1906 at Concord, Massachusetts and grew up amongst the wealth and creativity of the Robb and Morse families. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, 1925-1929.; Following their marriage in 1930, the Whytes pursued a life of painting, photography, hiking, skiing and travelling. Their log home and studio in Banff became a focal point for their artist friends, Stoney Indians and local pioneers. Catharine shared Pete's involvement in skiing and hiking organizations and together they managed Skoki Lodge from 1932-1934. In following years, the Whytes travelled extensively. During the Second World War, Peter served in the reserve army, with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a photographer and, briefly, as an official war artist. Catharine continued to paint and maintain their home and, when possible, accompanied Pete to his military postings. In civilian life, Pete resumed his art career, explored new photographic techniques and sculpted.; Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Whytes formulated plans for a foundation to preserve the art and history of the Canadian Rockies. Plans for a building to house an archives, public library and gallery were in preparation when Pete died in 1966. The Peter Whyte Foundation was named in his honour. Catharine immersed herself in the development of what is now the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, in the cultural community, painting, outdoor activity, travel and work with the Stoney First Nations. She became a more active photographer, recording her travels and outdoor pursuits. She served in an official capacity with numerous cultural and charitable organizations, was a patron to individuals studying art and music, and supported numerous causes relating to the Stoney First Nations. Catharine also supported causes related to multiculturalism, regional culture and recreation, and cancer research. Despite her modesty and often anonymous patronage of causes, Catharine was recognized with numerous awards and honours, including the Order of Canada in 1978. She died in Banff in 1979.

History / Biographical: Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

History / Biographical: Sydney R. Vallance, 1891-1979, was a lawyer and mountaineer at Calgary and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Vallance began his law career in 1920, establishing a private practice in 1929. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1932 and held executive positions at both the section and national levels, including a term as President from 1947 to 1950. He made over one hundred ascents during his climbing career. Vallance was also a member of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and was an avid amateur photographer

History / Biographical: Ulysses LaCasse (or Ulysse; or La Casse), 1888-1972, was a trail guide and national park warden at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. LaCasse came to Banff in 1908 and worked in various cooking jobs including trail cook for surveys and trail outfits. He guided Caroline Hinman's trail riding groups before joining the Canadian Army in Europe and Siberia. LaCasse accompanied Byron Harmon, Soapy Smith and Louis Freeman on their five hundred mile expedition through the Canadian Rockies, 1924. LaCasse was a long-time warden in the Castle Mountain and Lake Louise districts

History / Biographical: The Vaux family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were photographers, mountaineers and scientists. Mary M. Vaux, 1860-1940, George Vaux Jr., 1863-1927, and William S. Vaux Jr., 1872-1908, were the children of George Vaux (VIII) of Philadelphia. They were all involved in photography in the early 1880s and were members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia. All three were taking photographs when the family made its first trip west in 1885. The first Vaux family photographs of the Canadian mountain west were made in 1887 during a summer trip along the Canadian Pacific Railway to Glacier House in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia in 1887.; The family made frequent visits to the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains over the next two decades to study the Illecillewaet and other glaciers, photograph, paint and climb. George's and Mary's photographic work centred on the mountain landscape, while William's concentrated upon the movement and physical features of glaciers. Due to the size of their large format cameras, the two brothers took most of the photographs during these trips and Mary was responsible for all of the printing. William Vaux died in 1908 and George did not return to the Canadian mountains after 1911; however, Mary Vaux Walcott returned to the region virtually every summer for over forty years. History / Biographical: William O. Field, 1904-1994, of Massachusetts, U.S.A., was a noted geologist with the American Geographical Society and an expert on mountain glaciers of the northern hemisphere. He made trips to the Canadian Rockies with his father, William Osgood Field, during the 1920s even before graduating from Harvard in 1926. William O. Field studied key glaciers in British Columbia and Alberta from 1922 until 1981.

History / Biographical: William Winston (Bill) Mair, 1914-1990, was a wildlife biologist and a Director General of the Canadian Wildlife Service. Mair conducted research in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His MA thesis (The impact of an introduced population of elk upon the biota of Banff National Park), was produced in 1952 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Scope & Content: Fonds pertains to wildlife research in Banff National Park; includes wildlife enclosures, Waterfowl Lakes area, Waterfowl Lakes Cabin and Hillsdale Cabin, Bill and Jeanne Mair. Most prints are modern prints made from Mair's negatives; accompanied by letters describing the photographs. Transparencies were made during Mair's research for his BA degree, 1949.

History / Biographical: The Woodworth family was a pioneer family of Banff, Alberta, Canada. Benjamin Franklin Woodworth, 1861-1920, and Fred Woodworth, 1860-1923, came to the Banff area in 1883, and established a homestead at the base of Cascade Mountain. They were sons of Douglas B. Woodworth, member of parliament in Nova Scotia who came to Banff briefly in 1883 regarding a claim on the hot springs at the Cave and Basin. Fred Woodworth became postmaster in Banff before returning to Nova Scotia some time after 1890. His only child, A.M. [Anna Maud?] Woodworth, died in Banff in 1890.; Ben Woodworth remained in Banff, working for the CPR on railway construction and later as stable foreman for the Banff Springs Hotel. He continued as stable foreman at the Sanitarium Hotel in 1892, moving to the Bankhead coal mine in 1905. In 1910 he became caretaker of the Buffalo Paddock, remaining in the position until his death in 1920 as a result of a horse-related accident.; In 1888, Benjamin Franklin Woodworth married Elizabeth Anne McIntyre (McIntire), 1868-1936, who had come to Banff in 1887 from Burnley, England. The Woodworths had eleven children: 1) Ethel, 1890-1958, married to Jack Edwards; 2) Benjamin Douglas, 1891-1956, a road builder with the federal government in Banff; 3) Joseph F., 1892-1976, a civil servant and realtor in Banff; 4) Ella Maude, 1894-1977, first married to Jack MacAulay who was killed in 1917, and later married to Forest H. Kidney; 5) Frederick A., 1895-1916, an electrician at the Bankhead Mine; killed in action in First World War; 6) Annie Elizabeth, 1897-1977, married to Ulysses LaCasse; 7) G. Percy "Beef", 1899-1966, Banff national park warden from 1921 to 1963; 8) Mary, 1900-1981, married to Howard J. Deegan; 9) Adelia "Day Day", 1902-1977, married to Nick Nickerson ; 10) Robert G.,1904-1904; 11) John H.,1907-1953, a member of the Calgary City Police for 25 years
