In the background, above the trees, is a mountain which takes up half of the piece. The right side of the mountain is in shadow. The sky is painted with a light blue wash, and is occupied with light clouds. Where the sky meets the mat at the top of the piece, a small piece of sky pokes through the clouds and is cropped by the mat.
