History / Biographical: Dimitri Georgevitch de Leuchtenberg (1898-1972), Duke of Leuchtenberg was a member of the Franco-Russian Beauharnais house. In 1927 the Marquis Nicholas degli Albizzi invited Dimitri and his wife Catherine (1900-1991) to join him for the summer at the cabin he had subleased from A.O. Wheeler at Mount Assiniboine. Albizzi and Dimitri were cousins. The Duke and Duchess de Leuchtenberg lived in Germany following the Russian Civil War and in 1931 began annual winter trips to Quebec to visit Albizzi and his new winter sports station in Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts in the Laurentians mountains in Quebec. The Duke worked for Albizzi as a ski school instructor. In 1937 he was chosen to be a member of the Canadian Ski School Committee and in 1938 was a founding member of the Ski Instructor's Alliance. In 1939 the Duke de Leuchtenberg bought the Saint-Sauveur station from Albizzi and moved his family permanently to Quebec, Canada.

Scope & Content: File consists of one photograph album, comprising ca. 432 photographs, 10.5 x 16 cm or smaller. History / Biographical: The Banff Zoo operated as a tourist attraction from about 1905 until 1937, when it was shut down due to concerns about animal cruelty. While it was open, the Banff Zoo held monkeys, cougars, a polar bear named "Buddy" [acquired in 1907], two bear cubs from 1915 onwards, and various other wildlife.

Scope & Content: File consists of one album containing 35 black and white postcards and 1 colour postcard. Contents pertain to wildlife in the Rocky Mountains, including moose, bears, big horn sheep, buffalo, cougars, deer and elk, at least some of which were held in the Banff Zoo. File also contains images of Lethbridge [ca. 1909], Col. Cyril Childe [ca. 1920], Mt. Rundle, Niagara Canyon and other untitled views of the Canadian Rockies. One image depicting Lethbridge is dated 1909, stamped and annotated.
