Description
A soft, deerskin, souvenir notebook cover with a painted design on the front. One piece of deerskin (22.50cm in length), is folded over to make a cover for a notebook (missing). The front of the cover has “- Notes -“ painted in a brown colour on top, an image of a person wearing a feather headdress painted white, red and black, paddling a red, yellow, white and black canoe. The paddle is yellow. There are blue, white and black straight and wavy lines simulating moving water around the canoe. In the background, to the viewer’s left, there is an outline in black of a rock, behind which are green, yellow and black trees, and an outline, in black and yellow, of a mountain much further away in distance. On the viewer’s right are more trees in green, yellow and black. Below the painted man and canoe the words “Banff” and underneath “Canada” are painted in brown. There are some diagonal lines painted around the edges of the cover simulating fringes. When opened and flap is lifted, starting 0.50cm from the fold, the leather is stitched all around with brown thread to attach a small horizontally-cut piece of leather (2.0cmx7.5wide) for the notebook to hold the notebook. On the viewer’s right there is also a piece of folded leather (2.30cmx2cm wide) stitched on. This piece extends 1.50cm beyond the edge, creating a space to hold a pencil vertically.

The base is a flat woven wide strand tabby of roots, which at the base angle is separated and drawn up into the walls which are woven in a bird cage weave with a light fibre. On one major wall is a whale with mouth open and tail flukes above water, on the observe is a thunderbird with red feet and claws and yellow striped wings. On the minor ends are canoes, five passenger style of grey and burgundy. The handles on the bag are braided and extend down the interior walls of the bag, through the base, across it and stitched to the base rim.

Lid is also similarly almost completely covered with quill work, with dyed quills in red and yellow forming criss-cross pattern on bare birchbark, and quills in brown and cream filling in the rest of the area. Very nicely done.
