- History / Biographical
- James Edward Deegan, 1926-1996, was born in Banff, Alberta, Canada. His mother was Mary Edith Woodworth. Deegan became a national park warden in 1945 and, in the winters, worked as a packer and ski guide for Norman Watson at Skoki Lodge. Jim "Timberline" Deegan wrote poetry throughout his career and in 1977 he published "Timberline Tales" with his friend John "Dolomite" Porter. A revised version of "Timberline Tales," containing only Deegan's work, was published in 1993. Deegan retired from the warden service in the 1980s. He died in January 1996 after a lengthy illness.

- Justin James McCarthy (Jimmy) Simpson, 1877-1972, was a trapper, guide and outfitter and lodge owner at Banff and Bow Lake, Alberta, Canada. Born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Simpson was sent to Canada by his family in 1896. He worked briefly at Laggan (Lake Louise), Alberta for the Canadian Pacific Railway, travelled extensively and returned to the Rockies to work on the trail and trap. By the early 1900s, he was a successful guide and outfitter with Carl Rungius and the Alpine Club of Canada as clients. Starting in 1920, Simpson began building Num-Ti-Jah Lodge at Bow Lake as a base for hunting and climbing parties. Simpson and Williamina (Billie) Ross Reid, 1891-1968, married in 1916 and had three children. The lodge was run mainly by Billie Simpson and in 1945 the business was turned over to Jimmy Simpson Jr., 1922-2003 . Daughters Margaret Simpson, 1917-1941, and Mary Simpson (Hallock), 1919-2002, were internationally-famous figure skaters.

- Jon Whelan (1952-2022) was a researcher, historian, and collector based in Banff, Alberta. Jon had a special interest in topics related to Banff National Park and Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Jon conducted independent research, as well as research for various authors and historians, from the 1980s onwards. Jon was also an active participant in municipal politics in Banff. "For most of Jon’s life, he was engaged in community affairs and fearless in voicing an opinion. He was successful in raising public awareness and his tenacity achieved a personal goal, which was to initiate the use of video for regular Town of Banff council meetings. - Ken Jones, 1910?-2004, was active during the period 1937 to 1941 as a ski guide between Lake Louise and Skoki Lodge and as a mining camp cook at McDame's Creek, British Columbia (1937). He worked summers farming at his home in Forde, British Columbia and winters at Lake Louise and the Yoho Valley on snow removal and various jobs (1937-1940). He mined at Base Metals Monarch Mine, Field, British Columbia in 1941, then returned to Forde, British Columbia and Glacier, British Columbia. During this period, he competed in various ski meets and was a friend of the Swiss guides at Lake Louise and Golden.

- Fonds consists of a diary, photographs and a sound recording. Diary contains five year daily entries during the period 1937-1941. The diary was found in a deserted cabin in Moberly in 1974 and describes Jones' weather observations, employment details and personal matters as skiing guide, camp cook, miner, farmer, labourer and competitive skier. Diary also describes trips to Mount Assiniboine and Freshfield Glacier.
- Sound recording is mainly of Ken Jones relating stories about mountain personalities, including Chet Ogan, Jimmy Simpson and Tom Wilson; also includes short discussion between Collins and Rummel. Recording was made by Ken Jones, Myrna Collins and Elizabeth Rummel at Sunburst Camp, Mount Assiniboine, July 1968.
- Photographs are primarily b&w and include images of the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, Revelstoke, Yoho Valley, Lake Louise, Skoki, Freshfield, Wyoming; renovations and additions to Num-Ti-Jah Lodge; and hunting trips during the period ca.1930-1950. - Lawrence (Laurie, Larry) Allison Duncan, 1890-1978, was a photographer, businessman and collector at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Duncan came to Alberta in 1908 with his parents, Thomas Henry Duncan and Elizabeth Jane (Gill) Duncan, who settled on a ranch at Okotoks. For a time, Laurie Duncan operated a photography business in Calgary, specializing in views of Calgary, Indians, ranching and the Canadian Rockies. He attended Alpine Club of Canada camps in the 1920s, after becoming a member in 1920 with his graduating climb of Mount President, 1919. He was active in professional photography into the 1930s. Duncan was self-taught in mineralogy, painting and photography and was active for over fifty years in the development of mining and petroleum interests in the United States and Canada. Larry Duncan was an avid collector of shells, gems, rocks, fossils and cultural artifacts.

- History / Biographical
- Lawrence Grassi, 1890-1980, was a miner and mountaineer at Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Grassi was born in Falmenta, Italy and emigrated to Canada in 1912, working first as a section man for the Canadian Pacific Railway and from 1916 to 1945 as a miner for Canmore Mines. Grassi distinguished himself in solo mountain climbing and as an unofficial guide to many other mountaineers. Grassi is best remembered for trail building activities. J. S. Woodsworth led support for legislation to change the name of Twin Lakes in White Man Pass to Grassi Lakes in recognition of this work. As assistant warden at Lake O'Hara, British Columbia, Grassi upgraded and built numerous trails for which he received many honours in later life.

- Lillian Gest, 1897-1986, of Merion, Pennsylvania visited the Canadian Rockies almost every summer for sixty years, beginning in 1921. She was an active participant in "Off the Beaten Track" trips organized by Caroline Hinman between 1923 and 1933, in which young people camped, hiked, hunted and went horseback riding throughout the region between Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson. During the 1930s, Gest attended hikes of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and developed mountaineering skills at Alpine Club of Canada annual camps. Christian Hasler Jr. often served as her guide. Gest also belonged to the American Alpine Club, the Philadelphia Trails Club and the Lake O'Hara Trails Club. She spent considerable time in the Lake O'Hara region and wrote "History of Lake O'Hara" (1961), "History of Moraine Lake" (1970), and "History of Mount Assiniboine" (1979).

- Mabel Brinkley, d.1959, also known as Mrs. R. D. Brinkley and Ruth Brinkley, was a writer who lived in the United States and at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Brinkley claimed to have had a successful career as a writer before coming to Canada in 1955. She came to Banff to work on a local history to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the inauguration of Alberta. A manuscript for one of several planned volumes was completed, but never published.

- Margaret Elizabeth (Haskins) Greenham, 1881-1960, and Henry Warren Greenham, 1870-1953, were educators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Margaret Haskins was born in England and was educated there and in Paris, France. She moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1908, teaching at Havergal Ladies College. She met English-born Henry Greenham in Banff; they married and taught at Pine Lake, Alberta before returning to Banff in 1919. From 1920 until 1947, the Greenhams operated a private school known as the Mountain School. They were leading organizers of cultural activities in Banff. Margaret Greenham was instrumental in the Banff Literary-Dramatic Society, the Merry-Go-Round Theatre for children and Banff Home Industries, a local crafts society.

- The Mather family were boat house operators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. William Mather, 1868-1927, emigrated to Ontario from Scotland in 1880 and came west ca.1888 to work for the Eau Claire Lumber Company on the Spray River near Banff. He worked for Raymond M. Rooper's boat house business on the Bow River and, in 1899, purchased the business. The Mather business included steamer tours in the summer and also involved winter sports on the Bow River. William Mather and Margaret McRavey Mather had four children, Jennie, Leslie, Allan and Hazel. With William Mather's death in 1927, the family incorporated its interests as the Bow River Boat House Limited, with Allan Mather as manager. The operation expanded to Lake Minnewanka in 1939. After Allan Mather's death in 1951, the business was sold to Ed Mader

- Bill McCowan, 1897-1975, was a government employee at Banff, Alberta, Canada. McCowan came to Banff from Scotland with his family in 1911. His brother, Dan McCowan, was a renowned naturalist and writer. Other siblings were Marie, Jim, Duncan, Rae, Jock and Jennie. Jennie McCowan (1894-1984) married John Clark Wilson (1888-1932), son of Tom and Minnie Wilson. Their daughter, Bernice, married Bill Waterworth.

- History / Biographical
- The Moore family resided at Banff, Alberta and Yoho Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Col. Philip A. Moore, 1879-1951, was a guide, soldier, lecturer and publicist. Pearl Brewster Moore, 1889-1973, was a homemaker and tourist lodge operator. Daughter, Edmee Brewster Moore (Reid), 1908-1971, was a homemaker and wife of Charles Reid. Pearl Brewster, born in Banff, was an active sportswoman. In 1905, she met Philip Moore, who had joined Jim and Bill Brewster in the packing business. The Moores made their home in Banff in 1907. A trained soldier, Philip Moore distinguished himself in France in the First World War and served with the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War. The Moores ran various Canadian Pacific Railway facilities, including Yoho Valley Bungalow Camp, during the 1920s and early 1930s. Col. Moore lectured widely during this period using motion pictures and lantern slides. During the 1930s, the Moores travelled extensively and were active in the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. Pearl Moore was instrumental in the Banff-Jasper fund during the Second World War. In 1971, Pearl Moore gave their log home, a showcase of Stoney Nakoda artifacts and art, to the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

- History / Biographical
- Nicholas Everard Morant, 1910-1999, was a professional photographer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was a Canadian commercial photographer of international repute and Canada's premier railway photographer of the 20th century.
- Morant was born at Kamloops, British Columbia, the son of Francis and Mollie Morant. After attending the University School at Victoria, Morant served as Special Photographer to the CPR from 1929 to 1935 and again from 1944 to 1981. From 1935 to 1939, he was a cameraman for the Winnipeg Free Press, and from 1940 to 1944 worked with the Wartime Information Branch of the federal government (later to be known as the National Film Board Stills Division).
- Morant had a prolific career as a freelance commercial, portrait, magazine, landscape and documentary photographer. His work appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Time, Life, Liberty, Saturday Evening Post, (Toronto) Star Weekly, Northern Sportsman, Reader's Digest, Country Guide, The Standard, National Home Monthly, Canadian Photography, Outdoor Canada, National Geographic, the Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, New York Daily News, and the two Canadian Pacific Railway magazines, The Spanner and Rail News.
- Two wartime images were featured on postage stamps, while three landscape views appeared on Canadian $10, $50 and $100 bills. His images were also used for corporate annual reports, postcards, brochures, calendars and advertisements. From the 1950s to 1980s Morant gave public slide shows of his work, two of the most popular being "A Talk Without Words" and "The World At Your Feet".
- Morant married Ivy May "Willie" Young in 1936 when he was a photographer with the Winnipeg Free Press. Beginning in 1929, and until the end of her life, Morant's travelling and working companion was his wife, "Willie," 1910-1986.

- William S. Park, born ca.1865, was a professional photographer who came to Calgary, Alberta, Canada ca.1909, from Ontario. He was accompanied by his daughter, Hetty (Lolly) Park, 1888-1968, who worked as a secretary in Calgary. The Parks travelled extensively and attended Alpine Club of Canada camps, ca.19l0-1935. They were close friends with photographer Harry Pollard and his family.

Letter is accompanied by three posters and five items of print material, all pertaining to the protection of wild flowers and plants.
