- Alice G. Fulmer, 1896-1989, was a resident and amateur local historian at Banff, Alberta, Canada.
- Scope & Content
- Fonds consists primarily of 155 topical files prepared by Alice Fulmer as a personal project between 1964 and 1969 and composed of historical notes, transcripts, clippings, ephemera and photographs. Topics center around Banff history and personalities; Canadian Rockies history, flora and fauna; skiing, Indians and miscellaneous Alberta and British Columbia subjects. ; Also includes the marriage record of Fulmer's great-grandparents, 1833; reminiscences about Emmeline Savatard, 1980; and a scrapbook on Banff history and personalities containing mainly Walter P. - Allan E. Crawford (1900-1989) of Calgary, Alberta and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, was a member of the Sky Line Trail Hikers from 1937 to 1946 and was the "Official Musician of the Sky Line Trail Hikers" in 1937, 1938, 1940, and 1941. He also participated in Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies trips from 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941 as their musician. Allan E. Crawford appeared on Calgary radio station CFCN "The Voice of the Prairies" on a live weekly program, with the music trio "The Gamboliers" playing the accordian with Eddie Clemens on guitar and J.E. Gerke on vocals. Allan also played the organ, piano and harmonica.

- The Banff Community Society was a liaison group representing town of Banff to the Government of Canada. Over the years, various groups have represented the interests of Banff residents and businesses in the absence of municipal government. These have included the Banff Board of Trade, 1912-1915, the Banff Citizen's Association, 1921 (became the Banff Advisory Council in 1925). The latter served until 1978, when the Banff Advisory Society (later the Banff Community Society) was organized. In 1983 the Banff Community Society's responsibilities were assumed by the Banff School Board.

- James Henry (Harry) McKid Bannerman - Born in Calgary on September 7, 1890. He resided in Calgary and trained in heating, plumbing and tinsmithing. He belonged to the United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He married Clara Haugan (born in Norway in 1890) in 1918. They had two girls, Ethel in 1919, Marjory 1921 before moving to Banff in 1923. Three more children arrived, Rundle 1924, Daphnie 1930 and Joyce in 1932. He carried on his trade in his shop on Bear Street. He had great machinery for making heating ducts, down spouts, elbows and eaves troughing out of tin. He also worked with copper sheeting for kettles, pots, wash tubs, coal scuttles, bath tubs, and a church spire. He crawled under homes to fix leaks and kept things moving. Harry was a volunteer fireman for twenty odd years. When he retired because of poor health the fire department gave him a beautiful recliner chair. He also served on the town council for many years, the last few as chairman. He retired in 1949. Harry was a member of the Southern Alberta and Oldtimers Associations and the Independent Order of Oddfellows. He was a staunch conservative and his sister Reta Crick was a staunch liberal. His son Rundle predeceased him in 1948 and his wife Clara in 1949. Harry passed away June 15, 1950.
- Joseph McKay Bannerman - Born 1851, came to Calgary in 1883. He served on city council then served four years as representative for Calgary in the Northwest Territories Legislature Assembly. Joseph and his wife Christina (born 1857) have their names moulded on the archway at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building. Christina passed away in 1907 and in 1908 Joseph moved to Banff. He found work in town and later remarried. They had two girls, Evelyn and Thelma Mary and lived on the corner of Otter and Buffalo Street across from the cemetary. Joseph died in 1932 and Emma went back to England.

- W. J. L. "Bill" Gibbons, 1914-1994 , was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada from 1945 until 1959. Gibbons came to Canada in 1941 and settled in Banff after the war with his wife, Ella Mae (Becker), a Banff native. He established British Photographic Laboratories, with partners Lou Crosby and Jack Anderson, in the basement of the Mount Royal Hotel, moving later to street-level. Bill and Ella Mae Gibbons travelled throughout the mountain parks photographing views for sale in the Banff shop. These were offered as hand-coloured prints, with much of the colouring done or supervised by Ella Mae.
- Later the business expanded to include colour postcards and slide sets. Gibbons employed other photographers, such as Bruno Engler, for specialty work, such as ski photography, and the Banff studio also did portraiture. Gibbons himself did most of the 4 x 5 format landscape work and made extensive use of models, many of who were young women employed by his Banff store. In 1959, Gibbons sold his business to a group of Banff businessmen and moved to Vancouver. In subsequent years, he continued to be active as a photographer and in publishing, working in different areas of the world. He made several photographic trips through the mountain parks, ca.1966-1972.

"S" sub-series, ca.1950, 1220 negatives (scenic views in the vicinity of Banff, Lake Louise, Banff-Jasper Highway, Jasper National Park, Radium and Columbia Valley, British Columbia and Pacific Coast, First Nations views); D. "T" sub-series, ca.1950, 482 negatives (scenic and commercial views, mainly Jasper, Banff-Jasper Highway and Lake Louise areas); E. Rolliflex and panorama negatives, 1949-1958, 584 negatives (Banff Winter Carnival, Banff School of Fine Arts, and Banff and area); F. Series consists primarily of commercial colour negatives and corresponding proof prints pertaining to Banff, Jasper and Yoho National Parks, also some transparencies and oversize display prints.

- William Robert Roberge was born in 1927 in Banff, Alberta and attended Banff schools. Roberge served in both the Royal Canadian Navy and the British Navy during the Second World War. Married in 1948 to Margot Sorensen, they have one son, Michael Brian. Bill Roberge is a member of the Calgary Naval Veterans Association, the Naval Museum of Alberta Society, a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, #26 Col. Moore Branch and in 1995, was awarded the Legion Meritorious Service Medal. Roberge has served on the branch executive and numerous committees of the legion. He is a long-time member of the Kinsmen Association, serving as president of the Banff Kinsmen Club and as deputy-governor of the Kinsmen Association's District #5.
- Bill Roberge served for six years on the Banff school board, three years as chairman. He served six years on the Banff Advisory Council, three years as chairman, and he served as trustee for two Banff Mineral Springs Hospital boards. In 1968, Roberge travelled to Rome as Banff's representative for the 1972 Winter Olympic Games for Canada bid. Since the town of Banff's incorporation, Roberge has served as councillor for two terms as well as holding membership on numerous committees each year.

- Brewster Transport Company is a transportation company based at Banff, Alberta. Formally organized in 1900 as W. & J. Brewster, Guides and Packers, the company expanded in 1904 into commercial development in Banff and acquired the Canadian Pacific Railway livery concession at Banff in 1905. From 1909 until his death in 1947, Jim Brewster guided the company, with Lou Crosby handling finance. Beginning in 1917, Brewster Transport entered the motorized era with touring cars, later replaced with a succession of buses. From 1920 to 1933, Bill Brewster was general manager and during this period the company acquired Royal Hawaiian Transport and the Sunshine Ski development. The company amalgamated its transportation interests with Rocky Mountain Tours in 1957, and in 1965 the company passed out of the Brewster family's hands, being sold to Greyhound Lines of Canada. Brewster Transport continues to operate as Brewster Transportation and Tours, a diversified transportation and accommodation company in the Rocky Mountains.

- Charles "Charlie" Clifford Carmichael Reid (1904-1984) was born near Suffield, Alberta, Canada. Charlie went to high school in Medicine Hat, Alberta and arrived in Banff in 1922 to serve his three-year pharmacy apprenticeship with Gourlay's Drug Store. After completing his apprenticeship, Charlie studied to be a pharmacist at the University of Alberta from 1926-1928. While at university, Charlie joined the Pharmacy Club and the Track Team. Charlie had dreams of opening his own pharmacy in Banff, which he did in 1936 on Banff Avenue and named it Banff Pharmacy Limited. He operated the Banff Pharmacy until his retirement in February 1977. He was known as a good employer that paid well, and known for selling French perfumes. A true entrepreneur, Charlie opened a branch store that sold general merchandise in the Banff Springs Hotel, a Curio and Gift shop across from the pharmacy, and a fur store. It is also noted that Charlie found an opportunity to sell coal to the Banff Springs Hotel, which is where he made a significant amount money. He remained in Banff until his death. He was described as a "go getter" and was known for dressing meticulously, particularly with his trademark bowtie. He was a keen and skilled golfer at the Banff Springs Golf Course (he was a member), and won the Prince of Wales trophy in the 1930's. He was an accomplished track and field athlete, captain of the canoe team, participated in water sports, and enjoyed hiking and hunting. He was good friends with George Noble (photographer), Dr. Ernest Kennedy (dentist), and Carl Rungius (artist). Charlie was a prominent Banff citizen: he served as the Registrar for births, deaths, and marriages; he served on the Banff Advisory Council; was a Charter Member of the Kinsman Club of Banff; he was a member of the Banff Curling Club; and he was a volunteer firefighter with fire brigade. When a fire broke out at the Banff Springs Hotel in the late 1920's, Charlie was one of the firefighters who helped put it out. Charlie was a bachelor until his mother died, although during this period he courted Edmee Moore, daughter of Col. Philip and Pearl (Brewster) Moore, whom he married in 1942. Charlie and Edmee Reid were friends of Mary Schaffer Warren and lived in the Warren home after Billy Warren's death. After Edmee died in 1971, Charles remarried a friend from Vancouver, Gladys McQueen, until his death on February 8th, 1984.

- Clifford Jackson White (II), 1929-2003, was born in Banff, Alberta, the son of Clifford and Mildred (Jackson) White and the grandson of Dave White. Clifford J. White attended public and high school in Banff and in 1951, married Beverly Pogue of Calgary. Together they have four children: Clifford (III), Tara, Bradford, and Tristan. Cliff White was thirteen years old when he guided for his father at Mount Temple, and he operated the bulldozer for Sunshine Village from 1946 to 1949. From 1949 to 1953, Cliff White was assistant to the general manager of Snowmobile Tours at the Icefields, and 1953-1963, he owned a service station in Banff. In 1960, White purchased Sunshine Village ski resort, sold it in 1966 and remained the manager there until 1977. White succeeded his aunt, Catharine Whyte as President of the Board of Trustees, Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation, 1979-1993. White was a member of the Kiwanis Club at Banff, and was the director of the Banff Chamber of Commerce. He was a Cub pack leader from 1953 to 1956.

Also includes a list of significant dates and events in Lake Louise ski history, 1894-1991. Textual records also include personal and legal records, Sunshine ski area pamphlets, 1960 - ?, correspondence, certificates, clippings, and pamphlets. Photographs consist of 20 prints re Clifford J. White, Beverly White and their children; Clifford White Sr. and ski development history. Motion pictures include a film "Top of the World," ca. 1970, 16mm, sd., col., ca. 500 ft., ca. 14 minutes. "A Jim Rice Production." Sunshine Village promotional film: skiing, lodge, lifts, helishots, etc. interspersed with 1930s footage of Skoki area skiing (some of which exists in this fonds). Film was property of Sunshine Village. Clifford J. White supplied some historical film footage by or collected by his father, Clifford White, for this film.

- History / Biographical
- Clifford White (I), 1902-1964, skier, mountaineer and photographer was the son of Dave and Annie White, and the brother of Peter Whyte. He spent his life in the Banff area and was a pioneer in ski development in the Banff and Lake Louise areas. In 1932, he and Russell H. Bennett, J.A. Weiss and A.L. Withers skied a 300 mile route from Jasper to Lake Louise in a 20 day period. Cliff White made numerous pioneering ski expeditions including trips to Skoki, the Columbia Icefields and the Coast Range of British Columbia in 1934. Clifford was an active participant in the construction of Skoki Lodge and Mount Temple Chalet, managing Mount Temple from 1939-1945. He also participated in the development of skiing at Mount Norquay. Following World War I, Clifford helped organize the first Banff Ski Club, 1926. Cliff White married Mildred Jackson, d.1953 and they had three children - Clifford Jr., Donald, and Peter.

- The Crosby family of Banff and Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada was involved with the development and operation of businesses at Lake Louise from 1923, when Louis S. and Gertrude Crosby built the Lake Louise Trading Company, a general store and dining room. Over the years they acquired Deer Lodge (1924); Triangle Inn, the YWCA and Inglenook Lodge (1941); and operated a gas station (1926). Deer Lodge was expanded in 1925, 1931, 1939, 1941 and staff quarters were added. Gertrude Crosby managed the businesses, while Lou Crosby was involved with Brewster Transport Company from 1907 to 1964. From 1947 until his death in 1964, Crosby was President of Brewster's and prior to that had handled the financial operations for the firm. The Crosby family was actively involved with the Banff Winter Carnival.
