- Caroline Hinman, 1884-1966, was a trip/tour leader who worked out of Summit, New Jersey, USA. Hinman was first introduced to the Canadian Rockies in 1913, attending several early Alpine Club of Canada camps. For almost every summer following until ca.1960, she conducted pack trips and tours throughout the Rockies, chiefly in the area between Mount Assiniboine, British Columbia, and Jasper, Alberta. During winters, her parties travelled widely in Europe, Asia and Africa. Starting in the 1940s, Hinman offered a wide variety of motor and rail trips through the Rockies, fishing expeditions in British Columbia, as well as camping trips. Hinman's motto, "off the beaten track," became the hallmark of her adventures.

- Textual records, 1915-1960, include diaries, notebooks, manuscripts, trip accounts, advertising materials, and other material. One of the diaries refers to an early trip (1915) with Mary Jobe and Curly Phillips, Robson Pass. The tour literature includes form letters, pamphlets, etc. containing itineraries for most of Hinman's trips in the Canadian Rockies.

- Clifford Jackson White (II), 1929-2003, was born in Banff, Alberta, the son of Clifford and Mildred (Jackson) White and the grandson of Dave White. Clifford J. White attended public and high school in Banff and in 1951, married Beverly Pogue of Calgary. Together they have four children: Clifford (III), Tara, Bradford, and Tristan. Cliff White was thirteen years old when he guided for his father at Mount Temple, and he operated the bulldozer for Sunshine Village from 1946 to 1949. From 1949 to 1953, Cliff White was assistant to the general manager of Snowmobile Tours at the Icefields, and 1953-1963, he owned a service station in Banff. In 1960, White purchased Sunshine Village ski resort, sold it in 1966 and remained the manager there until 1977. White succeeded his aunt, Catharine Whyte as President of the Board of Trustees, Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation, 1979-1993. White was a member of the Kiwanis Club at Banff, and was the director of the Banff Chamber of Commerce. He was a Cub pack leader from 1953 to 1956.

Textual records also include personal and legal records, Sunshine ski area pamphlets, 1960 - ?, correspondence, certificates, clippings, and pamphlets. Photographs consist of 20 prints re Clifford J. White, Beverly White and their children; Clifford White Sr. and ski development history. Motion pictures include a film "Top of the World," ca. 1970, 16mm, sd., col., ca. 500 ft., ca. 14 minutes. "A Jim Rice Production." Sunshine Village promotional film: skiing, lodge, lifts, helishots, etc. interspersed with 1930s footage of Skoki area skiing (some of which exists in this fonds). Film was property of Sunshine Village. Clifford J. White supplied some historical film footage by or collected by his father, Clifford White, for this film.

- Clifford White (I), 1902-1964, skier, mountaineer and photographer was the son of Dave and Annie White, and the brother of Peter Whyte. He spent his life in the Banff area and was a pioneer in ski development in the Banff and Lake Louise areas. In 1932, he and Russell H. Bennett, J.A. Weiss and A.L. Withers skied a 300 mile route from Jasper to Lake Louise in a 20 day period. Cliff White made numerous pioneering ski expeditions including trips to Skoki, the Columbia Icefields and the Coast Range of British Columbia in 1934. Clifford was an active participant in the construction of Skoki Lodge and Mount Temple Chalet, managing Mount Temple from 1939-1945. He also participated in the development of skiing at Mount Norquay. Following World War I, Clifford helped organize the first Banff Ski Club, 1926. Cliff White married Mildred Jackson, d.1953 and they had three children - Clifford Jr., Donald, and Peter.

- The Crosby family of Banff and Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada was involved with the development and operation of businesses at Lake Louise from 1923, when Louis S. and Gertrude Crosby built the Lake Louise Trading Company, a general store and dining room. Over the years they acquired Deer Lodge (1924); Triangle Inn, the YWCA and Inglenook Lodge (1941); and operated a gas station (1926). Deer Lodge was expanded in 1925, 1931, 1939, 1941 and staff quarters were added. Gertrude Crosby managed the businesses, while Lou Crosby was involved with Brewster Transport Company from 1907 to 1964. From 1947 until his death in 1964, Crosby was President of Brewster's and prior to that had handled the financial operations for the firm. The Crosby family was actively involved with the Banff Winter Carnival.

- David Malcolm Cheesmond, 1952-1987, was a mountaineer and engineer at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Cheesmond's mountaineering achievements span the globe and include all facets of climbing. Included are ascents in South Africa (where he was born), Europe, South America, Canada, United States and Asia. From 1981 until his death, Cheesmond lived in Canada and made many ascents here.
- In the Canadian Rockies, Cheesmond led a team of young climbers known as "the Wildboys" and made important climbs on Mount Robson (1981), Mount Assiniboine (1982), Mount Goodsir (1983), Mount Andromeda (1983) and the North Twin (1985). He opened three difficult new routes on Mount Yamnuska during the summer of 1985. During his time in Canada, Cheesmond took part in expeditions to Alaska, Mount Everest (1983, 1986) and K2 (1986). In 1984 he was part of a successful team which climbed Rakaposhi in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan, an ascent considered one of the finest achievements by Canadians in the Himalayas.
- In addition to organizing and executing the above projects, Cheesmond maintained a professional career in engineering. He was accompanied on many of his travels by his wife, Gillian. The couple had one daughter, Tserin. Dave Cheesmond disappeared in 1987 while attempting the Hummingbird Ridge on Mount Logan.

- History / Biographical
- Edward (Eddie) Clement Edgar Hunter, b.1926, is a skier, cinematographer, broadcaster, photographer and writer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Hunter began skiing in his native Edmonton, Alberta and became an expert ski racer in the mountains. He came to live in Banff with his parents in 1934 and was introduced to the Sunshine Ski area in 1936 by his uncle, Lloyd Hunter, who drove "Sunshine Suzie" for Brewster Transport. Hunter skied extensively in the Canadian Rockies, in Squaw Valley, California (1950) and competitively in Europe starting in 1954.
- Hunter worked as a free-lance cameraman during the 1950s and later in early live television in Calgary at CHCT, later CFAC. After working as an official photographer for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in Squaw Valley, he joined CFCN television. Hunter hosted a children's show, "Head Hunter," and a talk show, "Late Knight," while running a weekend ski program until 1965. Hunter held the photography concession on Sulphur Mountain, producing Polaroid shots for tourists and giving natural history talks.
- Hunter worked mainly as a free-lance motion picture cameraman for the next twenty-nine years. His major accomplishments, while working for other companies, involved a cold-war era agriculture documentary in Russia (1959), a documentary about the Superman movies in Calgary and camera work for the official 1988 Winter Olympic Games film. Most of the film footage in this fonds was produced by Hunter during quiet times when he was not hired out to other production companies. Head Hunter Films produced a number of short promotional films for Air Canada, Canadian Mountain Holidays, Sulphur Mountain Gondola, Norquay Ski Area and others. "How the West was Skied" was mainly a compilation of footage Hunter filmed over the years, supplemented with early footage collected from other sources.

Mainly unedited footage of skiing, ski racing, celebrities, developments, heli-skiing, disabled skiing, freestyle skiing and humorous skiing in the Canadian Rockies, Bugaboos, Cariboos, Monashees and Coast Range, also the United States and Europe. Features many prominent local and international skiers; Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper and areas; promotional and documentary film footage. B. Blue series, predominant 1960-1985, ca.60 motion pictures and segments, 4 video recordings. Consists of work prints and projection copies. C. Other motion pictures, before 1995, 12 motion pictures, 1 video recording. Consists of motion pictures collected by Hunter. D. Audio reels, between 1970 and 1995, 2 items.
- II. Textual records, ca.1945-1991, ca.30 cm. Series consists of film lists, scripts, call sheets, programmes, and other material; files re short films; and historical skiing materials.

- Edwin W. Mills, 1899-1979 was a resident of Hamilton, Ontario. He attended Ridley College and the Royal Military College, serving overseas from 1917 to 1919 in the Royal Flying Corps and the RAF. Mills was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada from 1935-1953, attending the ACC Assiniboine Camp in 1935 as well as the first camps at the Columbia Icefields and the Bugaboos. Mills frequently hiked at Lake O'Hara, Emerald Lake, and Bow Lake. In 1937, Mills made several ascents on Ellesmere and Baffin Islands with the Canadian Arctic Foundation.

- Ernest C. W. Lamarque, 1879-1970, was a surveyor, map maker, writer and artist at Vancouver and Oyama, British Columbia, Canada. Lamarque was born in Kent, England and emigrated to the United States in 1896, travelling to Winnipeg in 1897. He worked for the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trader at Isle a la Crosse, Fort Simpson, Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan before entering the surveying field in 1907. His survey work took him throughout British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon. In 1933-1934, he was in charge of the advance party reconnaissance for the Bedaux Subarctic Expedition. He was also involved in Alaska Highway, Royal Canadian Air Force and Whitehorn Mountain ski lift surveys.

- Frances Kathleen Montgomery, 1904-1989, and Esme Gabrielle (Gaie) Neufville Taylor, 1910-1994, met during their service in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War. After the war they shared a house in London and Waterloo, Ontario. Montgomery was a university professor in Romance languages; Taylor worked as a secretary and writer. Montgomery retired in 1971 and the women moved to Victoria, B.C. They were avid photographers, gardeners, readers, climbers and campers. Montgomery and Taylor travelled throughout Ontario and west to Alberta, B.C. and the United States. They attended several Alpine Club of Canada camps between 1959 and 1969

- Fonds consists of three series: I. Photographs, 1929-1976; II. Motion pictures, 1936-1964; III. Textual records, 1959-1994. Photographs and films pertain mainly to travel and camping in Europe, Ontario, western Canada and the United States. ACC camps in the Bugaboos, 1959, Fryatt Creek, 1960, Maligne Lake, 1962, and others are documented. Montgomery appears to have made the 35 mm photographs and the films, while Taylor appears to have made the 127-format negatives and superslide transparencies. - Frederick Archibald Brewster, 1883-1969, was an outfitter and guide at Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Brewster was born in Kildonan, Manitoba and in 1888 moved with his family to Banff, where he received his education. He subsequently attended St. John's College, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, obtaining a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering. Brewster worked briefly as a prospector and in 1910 embarked upon a long career as an outfitter and guide, first with Brewster and Moore. He established operations in Jasper in 1912 and was responsible for important parties, including those of Samuel Prescott Fay and the United States Biological Survey. Brewster served with distinction in the First World War and was involved with mountain warfare training of the Lovat Scouts in the Second World War. He supplemented his outfitting business with a series of camps which doubled as ski lodges: Fred Brewster's Rocky Mountain Camps, and boat concessions.

- George K. K. (Tommy) Link, 1887-1979, was professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Chicago, Illinois. Link spent many summers between 1928 and 1977 studying the Lake O'Hara region and building trails there, accompanied by his wife, Adeline Link, d.1943. The Links were frequently guided by Jim Boyce.

- John Hartefeld was born Johann Hartefeld in 1915 in Stettin, Poland (Germany). He studied physical education and manual arts from 1930 to 1933 and taught at a boys school in Berlin-Spandau from 1939 to 1945. Hartefeld moved to Garmish Partenkirchen, Germany where he worked as a ski instructor, sports teacher and faltboat (watercraft) instructor and guide.
- Gertrud Vinzenzia Sattler was born in 1920 in Wilkischen, Czechoslovakia and attended business college and language school in Prague, earning a certificate as a bilingual secretary in English and German. From 1945 to 1953 Gertrud Sattler worked for the U.S. Army in Garmish Partenkirchen as a secretary, bookkeeper and interpreter. She met John Hartefeld in Garmish Partenkirchen and together they immigrated to Canada in 1953 and settled in Toronto, Ontario.
- Gertie and John married in Toronto in 1953 and moved to Banff, Alberta settling at 213 Bear Street. In 1963, John and Gertie moved into their new home at 340 Muskrat Street, a house built by John. John Hartefeld earned his Alberta Journeyman's Certificate in Carpentry in 1958 and completed his B.Ed in Industrial Arts in the Faculty of Education in 1966 by attending summer schools and through correspondence courses with Queen's University and the University of Calgary. He taught at the Banff High School from 1957 to 1979 and was instrumental in designing and assembling the industrial arts shop at the Banff High School in 1962. John Hartefeld gave ski lessons to school-age students at Mount Norquay and he designed and built the wrought iron chandeliers and wall lamps in his home and also at the Bugaboo, Cariboo, and Bobbie Burns lodges. John enjoyed fishing, windsurfing, and building his own windsurfing boards for sailing at Vermillion Lakes. John Hartefeld died in a bicycle accident on Norquay Road in June 1997.
- From 1953 to 1959 Gertie worked for J.D. Hansen of Banff doing insurance, real estate and legal work. From 1959 to 1964 Gertie worked for Dermod Owen-Flood, Barristers and Solicitors as a legal secretary and bookkeeper and from 1963 to 1966 she worked for Nesbitt, Beaumont et al. Barristers and Solicitors. Gertie provided secretarial and bookkeeping services for Rocky Mountain Guides (now CMH) from 1966 to 1968 and from 1962 to 1975, she worked as an insurance and real estate agent and was an officer of Banff Insurance Services Ltd. In 1975, Gertie became an insurance consultant for CMH. Gertie Hartefeld enjoyed skiing, fishing, cooking, and tennis. She was an accomplished weaver and a member of the Harvie Heights Weavers Guild. Her garments could be purchased at The Quest in Banff. Gertie Hartefeld died in 2002.

- Glenn Tooke, 1930-1996, moved to Banff, Alberta from Edmonton with his wife Shirley in 1961. Glenn managed Banff Camera, Rundle Photo and Cascade Studio and in 1964, he and Shirley purchased the Banff A&W. In 1969, they opened and operated the restaurant Joshua's, in partnership with Werner Peschl and in 1970, they opened an art gallery that showcased Alberta artists and offered custom framing. During this time, Glenn and Rob Lefroy rented the Banff Avenue Auditorium (presently Parks Canada Information Centre) and held public dances with live bands on the weekends. In 1979, Shirley and Bob Kinzie established a professional theatre company called Any Space Theatre. With contract actors, musicians and playwrights, they presented their plays in many locations within Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary, and Edmonton. Glenn assisted in designing and building the sets, and provided all the photography for promoting the productions. Having divided their time between Banff and Calgary during the 1970s and early 1980s, Glenn and Shirley permanently settled in Banff in 1984 and re-established their gallery. In 1986, they opened Jump Start, a specialty coffee shop. Shirley and Glenn have two children, Robert and Tamara.

- Hans Gmoser, 1932-2006 was born in Braunau, Austria in 1932. During his long career he worked as a mountain guide, mountaineer, ski instructor, skier, cinematographer, lecturer, and founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canadian Mountain Holidays. Hans Gmoser was also an active cyclist and was based in Banff and Harvie Heights, Alberta.
- Gmoser gained early skiing and mountaineering experience in post-war Austria before emigrating to Canada with his friend Leo Grillmair in 1951. Lizzie Rummel gave him his first job in the mountains at Mount Assiniboine. By 1953 he was working as a mountain guide and founded Rocky Mountain Guides Ltd. (Canadian Mountain Holidays CMH) in 1957. That year he began filming promotional films containing climbing and skiing adventure sequences. He first used fixed-wing aircraft and later helicopters, starting in 1963, to transport clients for spring skiing and summer climbing. Gmoser toured throughout North America promoting his skiing and climbing films, attracting large audiences with his inspiring lectures.
- Gmoser built Bugaboo Lodge in 1968, the first of six lodges which also include Bobbie Burns, Galena, Gothics, Adamants and Cariboo lodges, to serve international heli-skiers and heli-hikers. Gmoser retired from Canadian Mountain Holidays in 1993. Hans Gmoser received honourary memberships in the Alpine Club of Canada and the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations. He was elected to the Honour Roll of Canadian Skiing and the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and received the Banff Mountain Film Festival Summit of Excellence Award. In 1987 Hans Gmoser was awarded the Order of Canada.

- Helen Jo and Ernest Kennedy were residents of Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ernest Kennedy, d.1972, was Banff's dentist for many years. Josephyne H. (Helen Jo) Kennedy, d.1977, was involved with amateur theatre and other community activities. With Margaret Greenham and others, she founded the Banff Literary-Dramatic Club in 1924 and was involved with the club until it ceased activities. She studied theatre at the Banff School of Fine Arts from 1933 to 1937 and specialized in make-up. During the Second World War, she worked with the Canadian Red Cross Society while Ernest Kennedy performed dentistry.

- Hermann Hagedorn was an American writer who was known for his biographical works, particularly on Theodore Roosevelt, as well as poetry and novels. Late in life, Hagedorn became interested in Moral Rearmament. During a visit to the movement's headquarters on Mackinac Island, Michigan in 1958, he met George McLean (Chief Walking Buffalo of the Stoney Indians), an active proponent and traveller on behalf of Moral Rearmament. Intrigued by McLean's character and philosophy, Hagedorn wrote articles as well as drafts of a biography tentatively titled "A Chief in Two Worlds," but died before the work could be completed.
