History / Biographical: Walter Ashdown, 1890-1975, was a chauffeur at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ashdown emigrated to Canada in 1904 and farmed for several years before becoming a private chauffeur, ca.1913, to prominent Calgarians prior to the First World War. He served as a dispatch rider and driver in France, returning to Canada in 1919. The following year he commenced employment with Brewster Transport Co., retiring ca.1970. During his long career, Ashdown was Brewster's chauffeur to celebrities, including royalty, politicians and actors. His 1930 drive of 81 miles in 82 minutes to deliver life-saving equipment to the Monarch Mine near Field, B.C. was widely publicized. In 1970, Ashdown received an award for one million accident-free miles.

History / Biographical: Brewster Transport Company is a transportation company based at Banff, Alberta. Formally organized in 1900 as W. & J. Brewster, Guides and Packers, the company expanded in 1904 into commercial development in Banff and acquired the Canadian Pacific Railway livery concession at Banff in 1905. From 1909 until his death in 1947, Jim Brewster guided the company, with Lou Crosby handling finance. Beginning in 1917, Brewster Transport entered the motorized era with touring cars, later replaced with a succession of buses. From 1920 to 1933, Bill Brewster was general manager and during this period the company acquired Royal Hawaiian Transport and the Sunshine Ski development. The company amalgamated its transportation interests with Rocky Mountain Tours in 1957, and in 1965 the company passed out of the Brewster family's hands, being sold to Greyhound Lines of Canada. Brewster Transport continues to operate as Brewster Transportation and Tours, a diversified transportation and accommodation company in the Rocky Mountains.

History / Biographical: James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

History / Biographical: James Irving McLeod, 1879-1955, was a businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. After coming to Lake Louise from Ontario in 1906, McLeod cut ice for the hotels there and was a manager for Brewster Transport Co. from ca.1912 until 1920. In 1921, McLeod and William Warren formed Rocky Mountain Tours and Transport Co. Ltd. which McLeod operated until his retirement in 1946. The firm was operated by his sons, James and Allan, and his sons-in-law, H. H. Waterhouse and R. V. Bray, until amalgamating with Brewster Transport Co. Ltd. in 1957. McLeod also had an interest in the Homestead Hotel. James McLeod was married to Evelyn Davidson McLeod, 1885-1951.

History / Biographical: George Noble, 1879-1965, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Noble was born in Woolwich, England where he apprenticed as a photographer. He came to Banff in 1909 to operate a photographic business for his uncles, George and Bill Fear, who owned a curio business. In 1919, Noble bought the photographic business and, in 1932, acquired the remainder of the Fear Brothers business. He built a new studio and shop, which offered portraiture, photo- finishing and framing services and sold photographic supplies, camera equipment and English china. In addition to portraiture, George Noble and employees, such as photographer Bill Jamieson, produced a wide range of documentary, scenic and commercial views. Noble's shop offered black and white and hand-coloured prints of local events and Rocky Mountain views. George Noble was an active member of the community, serving on both the Banff School Board and the Banff Board of Trade for many years. Upon his retirement in 1957, his business was acquired by a group of investors which included Bill Jamieson, lab-technician and photographer for the Noble business from 1936 to 1957

History / Biographical: Claude Melville Walker, 1883-1952, was a surveyor and engineer who had a thirty-five year association with Banff National Park. He served with the Surveys Branch engineering service and was supervising engineer of the western parks from 1936 to 1948. He was involved in the survey of the Banff townsite, superintendent of construction, Big Bend Highway, and supervised construction of the Icefields Parkway, and major highways in British Columbia and the North West Territories. History / Biographical: Nicholas Everard Morant, 1910-1999, was a professional photographer based at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was a Canadian commercial photographer of international repute and Canada's premier railway photographer of the 20th century.; Morant was born at Kamloops, British Columbia, the son of Francis and Mollie Morant. After attending the University School at Victoria, Morant served as Special Photographer to the CPR from 1929 to 1935 and again from 1944 to 1981. From 1935 to 1939, he was a cameraman for the Winnipeg Free Press, and from 1940 to 1944 worked with the Wartime Information Branch of the federal government (later to be known as the National Film Board Stills Division).; Morant had a prolific career as a freelance commercial, portrait, magazine, landscape and documentary photographer. His work appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Time, Life, Liberty, Saturday Evening Post, (Toronto) Star Weekly, Northern Sportsman, Reader's Digest, Country Guide, The Standard, National Home Monthly, Canadian Photography, Outdoor Canada, National Geographic, the Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, New York Daily News, and the two Canadian Pacific Railway magazines, The Spanner and Rail News.; Two wartime images were featured on postage stamps, while three landscape views appeared on Canadian $10, $50 and $100 bills. His images were also used for corporate annual reports, postcards, brochures, calendars and advertisements. From the 1950s to 1980s Morant gave public slide shows of his work, two of the most popular being "A Talk Without Words" and "The World At Your Feet".; Morant married Ivy May "Willie" Young in 1936 when he was a photographer with the Winnipeg Free Press. Beginning in 1929, and until the end of her life, Morant's travelling and working companion was his wife, "Willie," 1910-1986.

History / Biographical: The Associated Screen News (ASN), established in Montreal in 1920 as a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway, produced photographs, newsreels, shorts, travelogues, motion pictures, and industrial films featuring the CPR's extensive transportation services. In developing its international travel business, the CPR established a steamship company, the Empress Line. ASN photographers travelled aboard the CPR and Empress Line ships photographing the various travel and cruise destinations to which they were assigned, promoting the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Empress ships. In 1935 ASN purchased the famous Notman & Sons photographic studio in Montreal.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of records pertaining to the career of George William Rance who worked with the photography division of the Associated Screen News (ASN) travelling the world aboard the Empress ships. Rance also worked in the camera shop in the Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alberta and ASN's Head Office in Montreal, Quebec. Fonds consists of Associated Screen News photographs of Cochrane to Banff motor road, Banff townsite and environs, Banff-Lake Louise road, Mount Assiniboine, Waterton Lakes National Park, ca.1925. Box is divided into 3 sections with removable wood separators, small pieces of felt line 2 sections of the box.

History / Biographical: The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies is a trail riding organization based in Calgary, Alberta. The organization was established in 1923 with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ride was held in 1924, and annual summer trail rides and pow-wows attracted fifteen hundred members by 1929. Many notable residents of the Bow Valley, including members of the Brewster and Moore families, Catherine Robb and Peter Whyte, and Carl Rungius have participated in trail rides. Support from the Canadian Pacific Railway ended in 1961. As of 2020, the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies remains an active organization.
