File pertains to the Official Trail Ride of 1937 organized by the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies, which Jean Hembroff MacDonald participated in. File documents the trail ride to Mount Assiniboine and the camp at Mount Assiniboine, with several landscape photographs but mostly of the hikers.

Notes: Jean wrote an article about her experience in the form of an article and a poem [see related material], and used this experience for future lectures.; Slides are numbered on the back. Some are missing, the new number and order was imposed by Archive and Library Assistant for clarity.; Slides were stored with a note stating: "Slides taken by the C.P.R. of Trail Ride, 1936-1937."

History / Biographical: Maud Grice-Hutchinson, of Cheltenham, England, and her husband, Reverend Canon Rowan E. Grice-Hutchinson, lived in Sorrento, BC, from 1913-1916 and again from 1919-1923. During World War I the couple returned to England where Maud served as Commandant for the veteran's hospital on her father's estate, Boddington Manor (Gloucester, UK), and Rowan as a Military Chaplain. Maud and Rowan moved back to Boddington permanently in 1962 when she inherited the estate. A mountain at the north-west end of Shuswap Lake (between the Anstey and Seymour Arms) was named Mount Grice-Hutchinson in 1978 after the Reverend. On July 9, 1936, Maud, her sister Violet Seeley, and Mary Diana Buckle arrived in Canada after having taken a ship over from Liverpool. They stayed at the Kananaskis Ranch from 4-7 August before starting on their trip. They had four guides and twelve pack horses to make the 300 mile (483 kilometer) trip to Jasper. Notes about the trip written by Maud later mention locations like the Red Deer River and White Rabbit Pass before arriving at the Saskatechewan River. After that, she names the Snow Dome Glacier, the Columbia Icefield, and Nigel Pass before arriving in Jasper. The four guides in her notes are named Edie Rowe, Edie Fraser, Smoky, and Chet [possibly Chet Ogan, a guide who worked for the Brewster family out of the Kananaskis Ranch in the 1930's].

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of 83 lantern slides and accompanying lecture notes. Topics include pack trains, camps, activities and scenic views, Banff and Jasper National Parks and areas. Documents include a handwritten script made by Maud Grice-Hutchinson to accompany the slides and a photocopied copy of the Brewster family's Kananaskis Ranch guestbook page 63, dated August 1936.

Notes: Not all images were taken by Grice-Hutchinson - some bear manufacturers' labels and were most likely purchased after the pack trip.

History / Biographical: Belmore Browne, d.1954, was a well-known artist who lived and worked at Banff and Seebe, Alberta, Canada and in the United States. Browne and Agnes Evelyn Sibley, 1882-1976, were married in 1913. In 1921, they bought property in Banff for a summer home and with their children, George, 1918-1958, and Evelyn, 1915-1994, travelled extensively throughout the 1920s and 1930s in pursuit of subjects for Belmore Browne's paintings. In 1946, the Brownes built a home near Seebe. Agnes Browne was a diarist for the family and much of her extensive writing centres around the career of Belmore Browne. Her daughter Evelyn consolidated the diaries in the 1980s. George Browne was also an artist.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of diary excerpts and transcripts, 1912-1913, 1921-1954; also includes a guest book, 1924-1956, posters, ca.1942, publications relating the story of Belmore Browne Peak, 1992-1993, and photographs, ca.1930, ca.1955, 1991-1992.; Diaries are mainly trip diaries pertaining to summer travels and family life in the Canadian Rockies, 1921-1933. Included are trips to Red Earth Creek, Skoki, Mystic Lake, Sawback Lake, Red Deer Valley, Hector Lake, Bow Lake, Kananaskis Valley, Cascade and Panther rivers, Elbow Pass, and other locations. Other diaries cover the years 1943 to 1954, years partly spent at Seebe until Belmore Browne's death. Diary copies and typescripts have been annotated by Evelyn Browne.; Posters on alpine and wilderness survival, ca.1942, were done by Belmore Browne for the American military's Arctic Training Program.; Photographs are mainly photographic copies of paintings by Belmore and George Browne produced by Peter A. History / Biographical: Lantern slides were regularly used in movie theatres into the 1930's to advertise upcoming films, mark intermissions, encourage viewers to visit the conession stand, and provide general announcements. Slides could be provided by the studio with official film images or promotions - more often they were handmade title slides featuring simple images and text.

Scope & Content: File consists of lantern slides used in Banff movie theatre. Includes announcements and advertisements.

Notes: PS-37 contains typed text on clear celullose between two panes of glass bound with clear tape. The celullose insert is badly discoloured and warped, the text is badly faded. The text reads "BANKHEAD VETERANS CLUB A GENERAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS WILL BE HELD IN THE CLUB ROOMS RIGHT AFTER THIS SHOW."

History / Biographical: Stereographs are photographs of the same subject taken from slightly different angles. These photos, displayed side by side in a stereoscope, would be viewed at close range, forcing the eye to overlay the two photos to create a 3D effect. Stereoscopes could be hand held or mounted to a table or other surface. Stereographs could be made with a single camera, moved slightly from the first image taken; specialized dual-lens cameras streamlined the process. Stereographs can be made with precious metals, glass, paper, and celluloid bases with any kind of photographic process.

History / Biographical: Lantern slides were used by government agencies to illustrate holdings and acquisitions during meetings. This could take the form of text-based or photographic images. This collection contains photographic images of mainly Jasper National Park that were taken by the Department of the Interior or the Department of Extension, University of Alberta. The Department of the Interior was founded in 1873 and was responsible for settlement and development of western Canada until 1936. This included surveying what is now Alberta and then promoting and settling the area through a massive immigration campaign. Coloured lantern slides would have been utilized in this capacity to realistically showcase the Rocky Mountain region to officials in Ottawa. The Department of Extension at the University of Alberta was founded in 1912 with the aim of sharing the University's collections and knowledge with rural communities throughout Alberta. Based out of Edmonton, the Department of Extension used travelling libraries, magic lantern shows, and public lectures to accomplish this goal. It is still an active department at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

History / Biographical: The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was officially formed in Februray, 1881, to construct a railroad that would link the eastern provinces with British Columbia, a key component of the Canadian Confederation of 1867. Headed by William C. Van Horne as General Manager, the railroad arrived in the Canadian Rockies in 1883 and a siding was established just east of present-day Banff. When railroad workers discovered a natural hot spring on the south side of the Bow River, Van Horne ordered the construction of a hotel that would house visitors brought in by train to visit the springs. Construction of the Banff Springs Hotel finished in 1888 and joined a handful of CPR hotels throughout the Rocky and Selkirk Mountain ranges. The popularity of the hot springs and surrounding area led to the formation of a national park and to the town of Banff. After construction of the railway had completed, the CPR continued to survey and document the Rocky Mountains alongside federal agencies like the Department of the Interior and private outfitters. Utilizing coloured lantern slides the CPR was able to showcase the mountains as both tourist and settlement destinations. Magic lantern shows of these slides could be used for administrative purposes by the company to showcase land holdings and investments or in public shows as advertisements of the new railway.
