- A Japanese samurai sword with black cord handle and black scabbard. (a) sword, long curved steel blade connected at hilt with brass to wooden handle covered with white pebbly sharkskin which shows through diamond shapes left open under silk cord which wraps handle. Metal band at base of hilt and metal cap at its end have relief casting of leaves and blossoms, and a bronze casting of blossoms is caught under black cord wrapping handle, oval sword guard has cut out relief of branches and blossoms, with holes on either side large enough to allow dirk to pass through. (b) dirk, long thin blade set into brass handle with cast relief of heron standing in stream with incised bushes around. Japanese calligraphy on other side of handle. (c) scabbard, slightly curved to fit blade. Wood covered with fine grained leather with narrow black band, horn? at mouth and another at top of slit pocket where dirk slides in. - Large, bowl shaped twist weave basket, ribs protrude .2 -.3 cm. from final row of stitching. Stitching accomplised by two strands twisted around each rib, three separate rows are woven with one stitch around two ribs, possibly to give basket greater stability as well as provide variety in texture. Ten rows of dark brown geometric designs contrast the light brown plant fiber background, these panels appear to be made from bark. Ribs meet at center bottom and rise to a slight rounded point on inside. 3.5 cm. diameter in center is reinforced by overlapping stitches binding three ribs each. Marks: on tag attached to rim "Poma B43115 55.00".

(a) shuttle (24.6 x .7 x 5.1) hand carved, wooden, flat board with pointed end, and deep arch carved in other end, cut out window about half its length at pointed end has long carved spike up the middle nearly the length of the opening. Note: wood split through at point.( b) shuttle (25.7 x .5 x 2.0) as (a) but narrower and finer. Hard twist white cord wound from bottom arch up around spindle and back, then up other side. Note: warped along length. (c) shuttle (19.4 x .5 x 2.9) as (a) but smaller and harder wood with brown speckling. (d) shuttle (17.7 x .7 x 2.7) as (a) but hardwood, maple? and more carefully carved and smoothed. (e) shuttle (17.7 x .7 x 2.5) as (d) but squared at edges.
