- Abstract
- A Castle in the Wilderness: The Story of the Banff Springs Hotel is the definitive historical record of one of the world’s most famous mountain resorts. The story navigates the hotel’s early history from its construction by the Canadian Pacific Railway to the glittering era of the 1920s through to the changes of modern times. Local author and historian Bart Robinson has been exploring and writing about the Banff Springs Hotel since the 1970s. In A Castle in the Wilderness he combines a complete hotel history with rich anecdotes and snippets of the past that have enriched Banff and indeed Canada, from the hotel’s links to the construction of the transcontinental rail line to the visits of maharajahs and movie stars. How did such a gracious hotel come to be in the wilds of the Canadian Rockies? How much did it cost to build? Who designed it? Who selected its furnishings? Which famous visitors has it hosted? And why is now known as the Fairmont Banff Springs? These and many more questions are answered in the Castle in the Wilderness. (from publisher's website)

- Abstract
- In the 1920s, as a national network of roads and youth hostels spread across Canada, so did the practice of hitchhiking. By the 1960s, the Trans-Canada Highway had become the main thoroughfare for thousands of young baby boomers seeking adventure. Thumbing a Ride examines the rise and fall of hitchhiking in the 1970s, drawing on records from the time. The Trudeau Liberals responded to youth unemployment by subsidizing a network of hostels to make travel an educational adventure, and many equated hitching and hostelling with the freedom to do their own thing. At the same time, a counter-narrative emerged, of girls gone missing and other dangers. Town councillors, community groups, and motorists called for a nationwide clampdown on a transient youth movement that they believed was spreading hippie sensibilities and anti-establishment nomadism. Hitchhiking is a ritual that requires trust, boundary negotiation, and control. Neither the identity of the hitchhiker nor the motives of the motorist can be determined in advance. Linda Mahood unearths good and bad stories and key biographical moments that formed young travellers’ understandings of personal risk, agency, and national identity. Thumbing a Ride asks new questions about hitchhiking as a rite of passage, and about adult interventions that turned a subculture into a pressing moral and social issue. This book will appeal to students and scholars of history, sociology, and social policy. It will also find an appreciative audience among baby boomers who recall the transient youth movement. - Abstract
- "For three years Voss and the Tilikum, aided by a rotating cast of characters, visited Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil and finally England, weathering heavy gales at sea and attracting large crowds of spectators on shore. The austere on-board conditions and simple navigational equipment Voss used throughout the voyage are a testimony to his skill and to the solid construction of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth vessel. Both Voss and his original mate, newspaperman N.K. Luxton, later wrote about their journey in accounts compromised by poor memories, brazen egos and outright lies. Stories of murder, cannibalism and high-seas terror have been repeated elsewhere without any regard to the truth. Now, over a century later, a full and fair account of the voyage--and the magnitude of Voss’s accomplishment--is at last fully detailed. In this groundbreaking work, marine historians John MacFarlane and Lynn Salmon sift fact from fiction, critically examining the claims of Voss’s and Luxton’s manuscripts against research from libraries, archives, museums and primary sources around the world. Including unpublished photographs, letters and ephemera from the voyage, Around the World in a Dugout Canoe tells the real story of a little-understood character and his cedar canoe. It is an enduring story of courage, adventure, sheer luck and at times tragedy."-- Provided by publisher.

- Abstract
- Nestled in and around the Rocky Mountains are a series of remote backcountry lodges offering the experience of a lifetime. Katie Mitzel has spent the last twenty years as a chef in these lodges, joyfully feeding hungry travelers who have journeyed hundreds of miles to have their own backcountry adventures. Whether you're wilderness hiking, off-piste skiing, or simply relaxing, the backcountry offers total immersion in the stunning mountains, coupled with the allure of completely unplugging from daily life. In Rocky Mountain Cooking, Katie shares her favorite lodge recipes, many taking inspiration from the colors and textures of mountains, glacial lakes, wildflowers, and starry nights. Her dishes are full of unexpected flavors and mouthwatering aromas, but are accessible enough to create at home, using ingredients readily available from the grocery store (brought into the backcountry for her on horseback or by snowmobile or helicopter!). Cooking in the backcountry has brought Katie unique moments of inspiration and gratitude, like carefully adjusting ingredients when baking at altitude, and appreciating the simple benefits of water and heat after manually hauling water by the gallon and cooking without power. As a result, her food is simple, fulfilling, hearty, and comforting. Start your day with Skillet-Baked Huevos Rancheros. Enjoy a hearty Summer Hiking Salad after a long trek or busy workday. Snack on some Climbers' Cookies at the top of a ski run. Then indulge in Baked Halibut with Scallops and Asparagus, along with a slice of Lemony Lavender Buttermilk Cake for dessert. All of the recipes are perfect for gathering your family and friends around the table to share a meal, hear the stories from your outdoor adventures, and maybe plan your next. Filled with breathtaking landscape photography and profiles of select beloved lodges, Rocky Mountain Cooking brings the natural bliss of backcountry living into your daily life, no matter where you live. - Known affectionately to his friends as the King of the Coast Range, John Baldwin has spent his life in a quest to experience the west coast wilderness. Since his teenage years he has explored the rugged Coast Mountain Range, climbing 700 peaks, many of them first ascents, and making perhaps one hundred multi-week, long-distance forays across the icefields and along the ridges of what is one of the last true wilderness areas on earth. Shunning the easy path, John has forged his own way through some of the toughest geography on the planet. He is a mountaineer and explorer of the first order (from Alpine Club of Canada)

- Abstract
- Smartly dressed and smiling, Canada’s black train porters were a familiar sight to the average passenger—yet their minority status rendered them politically invisible, second-class in the social imagination that determined who was and who was not considered Canadian. Subjected to grueling shifts and unreasonable standards—a passenger missing his stop was a dismissible offense—the so-called Pullmen of the country’s rail lines were denied secure positions and prohibited from bringing their families to Canada, and it was their struggle against the racist Dominion that laid the groundwork for the multicultural nation we know today. Drawing on the experiences of these influential black Canadians, Cecil Foster’s They Call Me George demonstrates the power of individuals and minority groups in the fight for social justice and shows how a country can change for the better. - Abstract
- Iroquois principally from Caughnawaga, today's Kahnawa`:ke, were recruited now two centuries ago on a par with Whites to man the large canoes taking trade goods west from nearby Montreal, coming back with animal pelts. While some soon returned home, others stuck with the fur trade, yet others made their lives across the west so far as possible on their own terms. Their stories speak to Indigenous self-determination and self-sufficiency. The book tracks four Iroquois clusters or bands across time, place, and generations. Set down among Montana Flatheads, Iroquois responded to their host's desire for the Catholicism they brought with them from Quebec by four expeditions to St. Louis in search of a Jesuit missionary, who no sooner arrived than lost interest, leaving Iroquois once again to mentor their hosts. The fur trade's economic imbalance impelled a second group, whose words quite remarkably survive as they were spoken, to overturn the status quo to the advantage of employees, they themselves engaging the American west. A third group opted for the Pacific Northwest fur trade, those doing so on the American side of a border put in place in 1846 discovering their long service mattered for naught when they sought to settle among their White counterparts, those in British territory faring somewhat better. Repeatedly lauded in travelers' accounts, a fourth cluster was displaced on their homeland becoming Jasper National Park, again on their new locale an Alberta boom town, yet still today self-identify as Iroquois.

- A Poetry Book Society Recommendation 2016. 'When we climb alone en cordee feminine, we are magicians of the Alps - we make the routes we follow disappear'. The poems of Helen Mort's second collection offer an unforgettable perspective on the heights we scale and the distances we run, the routes we follow and the paths we make for ourselves. Here are odes to the women who dared to break new ground - from Miss Jemima Morrell, a young Victorian woman from Yorkshire who hiked the Swiss Peaks in her skirts and petticoats, to the modern British mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who died descending from the summit of K2. Distinctive and courageous, these are poems of passion and precipices, of edges and extremes. No Map Could Show Them confirms Helen Mort's position as one of the finest young poets at work today.
