Scope & Content
File pertains to a photograph album depicting trips taken by Lillian Gest, usually during the summer, from 1934-1937. The 1934 trip was part of the Alpine Club of Canada Annual Camp in northern Jasper National Park - starting in the Eremite Mountain area and working east towards Mount Edith Cavell. Also includes a few photographs of mountains around the Banff town area. The 1935 trip was part of the ACC Annual Camp in the Mt. Assiniboine and East Kootenay areas. Also includes newspaper clippings pertaining to Club activities and greeting cards from Club members. The photographs associated with the Yoho Icefields from Bow Lake trip are most likely from the summer of 1936 based on greeting cards labelled as such, but very few of the photographs themselves are annotated. The remainder of the album is dedicated to the 1937 trips to Mt. Trident, Mt. Bryce, the Columbia Icefield area, Bryce and Zion, Utah, the Boulder Dam, Arizona, and Colorado. Also includes Christmas cards from 1937 from various friends and Club members. Inserts pertain to the overview/advertisements for the summer 1937 and 1938 trips that would have been sent out by Caroline Hinman in advance detailing routes, expectations, and prices ; a small photograph with a written note on the back, a letter addressed to Lillian Gest from the Springfield Television Broadcasting Corp, and a handwritten list of details pertaining to the summer 1934 trip orgainized by Caroline Hinman.
Notes

History / Biographical
The A. O. Wheeler Hut is located at Rogers Pass National Historic Site in Glacier National Park. The hut was built between 1945 and 1946, and it is a Recognized Federal Historic Building. The hut is named after one of the founding members of the Alpine Club of Canada, Arthur Oliver Wheeler. A. O. Wheeler was the first President of the Alpine Club of Canada, and he served as Honorary President of the Club for almost twenty years. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website: "Carrying on the tradition of the Glacier House which was closed in 1925 and now exists only as a few concrete foundation pieces, the Wheeler Hut serves as a base for the legendary powder skiing of the Rogers Pass area. In summer there are numerous opportunities for climbing and hiking. This is the birthplace of alpinism in North America. Many of the routes are steeped in tradition and history, an interesting fact to remember as you reach for that next impeccable quartzite handhold or take that next footstep along one of the many trails which wind through the lush cedar forests that dominate the region. This is the one and only ACC hut which can be reached by vehicle in summer. Winter access is a mere 2 km along a well-broken and level trail. It is difficult to convey to the first time visitor the number and quality of the summer and winter day trips possible from the hut. The potential is outstanding from this single hut including summer hikes to Asulkan Pass or up the Great Glacier Trail to the Illecillewaet Glacier, summer climbs to Sapphire Col, Mt. Sir Donald, and Avalanche Peak; winter ski tours to Young’s Peak, the Seven Steps of Paradise, the Dome Glacier – the list goes on and on. Go and explore for yourself, you will not be disappointed! The Wheeler Hut is quite luxurious! A propane system provides the cooking and lighting, with two wood stoves for heating. The hut sleeps 30 in summer and 24 in winter."

Nancy (Ford) Dart, daughter of Minneapolis businessman Allyn K. Ford, became a member of the Alpine Club of Canada in 1953. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Scope & Content
Item pertains to one black soft cover scrapbook with alternating paper dividers and plastic sleeves. Book contains newsletters, brochures, and letters pertaining to the Alpine Club of Canada dated 1922-2003, newsletters from the American Alpine Club 1941, and various travel and dining brochures for Jasper and the Jasper Park Lodge from ca. 1954. Tucked into a pouch inside the front cover are two letters addressed to Nancy Dart in 2003 regarding her 50th anniversary as a member of the ACC, four ACC annual newsletter booklets from 1922, 1923, and 1925, and an envelope addressed to Nancy Ford (Dart) containing paperwork pertaining to her admission to the ACC in 1953. Items throughout the scrapbook are either tucked into the plastic sleeves or dispersed throughout the pages. Contents include annual ACC camp brochures (one from 1908, others from the 1940s and 50s), letters (one addressed to Geoffrey Howard from Allyn K. Ford, in 1941 and another addressed to Mr. Ford, probably Allyn Ford, in 1953), photographs/postcards taped to a page divider, seven dinner lists from 1953 for the Jasper Park Lodge (all dated Friday, July 10 but each has a different header picture), a booklet from the third annual ACC membership dinner, a brochure for the 1941 annual American Alpine Club meeting and dinner, three tourism magazines for Jasper from the Canadian National Railway, one trail map of Jasper and one of Banff, an ACC newsletter and brochure for the Mountain Leadership Conference from 1989, a typed copy of a short story "A Journey with the Men of Alps" held together with a small pin (possibly a dramatic retelling of Allyn Ford's first trip to the Rockies), two ACC crossword puzzels (one partially completed), and a notice from the American Alpine Club pertaining to America's involvement in World War II from 1941. Tucked inside the back cover is a red paper envelope containing two photographs (possibly printed off the computer) of A.O. Wheeler from the 1923 ACC camp in Larch Valley.

Scope & Content
File pertains to a photograph album depicting three trips taken throughout the summer of 1932. Canadian Rockies Summer of 1932 depicts what is possibly an Alpine Club of Canada organized climb around the Mt. Sir Donald and Mt. Dawson area of British Columbia. Includes mountain views, portraits, people climbing, glaciers, and an ACC Annual Camp. Hinman Horseback and Camping Trip - July 1-17 [1932] depicts the annual backcountry horse trip organized by Caroline Hinman around the Mt. Assiniboine and East Kootenay areas of British Columbia. Includes scenic views, horses, camps, portraits, and two pages dedicated to the Hinman Party in August - it is not clear if Lillian Gest participated in the whole of Caroline Hinman's summer 1932 trip. At the Alpine Club Camp depicts the ACC Annual Camp for 1932, based in Glacier, BC. Includes the ACC camp, mountains, glaciers, portraits, scenic views, climbing, swimming, Abbot Pass Hut, Glacier Circle Cabin, enlargements, and greeting cards. Following the annotated ACC trip photographs are a collection of greeting cards, newspaper clippings, and misc. photographs from Gest's various trips during the summer of 1932. Most of these photographs are not annotated. Also includes greeting cards from trip members and a memorial card for Conrad Kain fixed to the inside back cover. Inserts 1 and 3 pertain to the overview/advertisement for the Summer 1932 and 1933 trips that would have been sent out by Caroline Hinman in advance detailing routes, expectations, and prices. Insert 2 pertains to a clipped page from what is possibly an ACC or Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies periodical.

Abstract
"Canadians and the Natural Environment to the Twenty-First Century provides an ideal foundation for undergraduates and general readers on the history of Canada's complex environmental issues. Through clear, easy-to-understand case studies, Neil Forkey integrates the ongoing interplay of humans and the natural world into national, continental, and global contexts. Forkey's engaging survey addresses significant episodes from across the country over the past four hundred years: the classification of Canada's environments by its earliest inhabitants, the relationship between science and sentiment in the Victorian era, the shift towards conservation and preservation of resources in the early twentieth century, and the rise of environmentalism and issues involving First Nations at the end of the century. Canadians and the Natural Environment to the Twenty-First Century provides an accessible synthesis of the most important recent work in the field, making it a truly state-of-the-art contribution to Canadian environmental history."--Publisher's website.
