A very thin knife with ebony handle like rifle butt and wooden scabbard wrapped with bands of black cord. (a) dirk, short, narrow, pointed steel blade with reverse curve to sharp shoulder on under side of hilt. Small carved ebony handle shaped like a rifle butt, with carved band of scallops and diamond shapes around middle. Two decorative notches carved across butt of handle. Note: handle checked along length. (b) scabbard, small, simple and straight, carved of two pieces of wood with triangular opening at mouth. Top carved to curve downward on one side to accommodate shoulder of blade. Girded with four double bands of finely braided cord, evenly spaced along length, and a fifth triple band at top beneath shoulder. Note: top fibre hands loose and slide up and down.

A Chinese gold scale (a) and case (b). a) A scale with a long thin rod made from gibbon bone with a scale marked along its length with small dots. A brass pan is suspended by a black thread through a hole at the blunt end of the rod. There is a single thread at 9.5 cm from the blunt end that acts as a fulcrum to hang the rod. b) A violin-shaped case made of carved bamboo that is hinged with brass at the end of the stem. A braided rattan ring slides down the stem to secure it when closed. There are carved areas insidethe case to fit the pan, rod and weight. The case is marked with a symbol carved into the outside. There is also a red and white paper inside with Chinese characters and “Ex.B Harry Sam” handwritten.

(b) single pearl, 2.4x .5 x .4 , small rounded tapered ellipse of gold with tiny seed pearl , .2 cm dia set into bevelled hole at centre, hollow. Stamped on back "14k" and torch hallmark. (c) same as (b) without pearl, 1.9 x .4 x .2, die struck. Hook clasp has double legs but joined by its curve into single hook. Period 1890 - 1915. (d) same as (c) but flat with border, 2.0 x .4 x .3, plain with small, gold, 14k, machine stamped, bead edging completely around outside. (e) engraved, 2.6 x .4 x .4, flat, rectangular bar with scrolled design hand engraved on side of hook clasp. Period 1890 - 1915. (f) silver, rhodium? plated over gold, 2.4 x .5 x .4, small openwork ellipse with five small flowers across middle joined by wire filigree. Cuts in flowers and around edges cause sparkling, diamond like appearance. Small hook clasp has tiny lever on back to lock pin when pushed down, 14k stamped on back. Period 1890-1915.
