History / Biographical: Dorothy Cranstone, 1904-1996, was a businesswoman and hotel worker at Banff, Alberta. Cranstone worked at the Banff Springs Hotel, 1929-1940, as Assistant Housekeeper, and later as Housekeeper at the Mount Royal Hotel. She went on to operate a gift shop in the Mount Royal Hotel. For many years, Cranstone was companion to Pearl (Brewster) Moore and later to Pat Brewster. She also worked for the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies as custodian of the Moore Home and as museum hostess.

History / Biographical: James Edward Deegan, 1926-1996, was born in Banff, Alberta, Canada. His mother was Mary Edith Woodworth. Deegan became a national park warden in 1945 and, in the winters, worked as a packer and ski guide for Norman Watson at Skoki Lodge. Jim "Timberline" Deegan wrote poetry throughout his career and in 1977 he published "Timberline Tales" with his friend John "Dolomite" Porter. A revised version of "Timberline Tales," containing only Deegan's work, was published in 1993. Deegan retired from the warden service in the 1980s. He died in January 1996 after a lengthy illness.

History / Biographical: Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

History / Biographical: Lawrence (Laurie, Larry) Allison Duncan, 1890-1978, was a photographer, businessman and collector at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Duncan came to Alberta in 1908 with his parents, Thomas Henry Duncan and Elizabeth Jane (Gill) Duncan, who settled on a ranch at Okotoks. For a time, Laurie Duncan operated a photography business in Calgary, specializing in views of Calgary, Indians, ranching and the Canadian Rockies. He attended Alpine Club of Canada camps in the 1920s, after becoming a member in 1920 with his graduating climb of Mount President, 1919. He was active in professional photography into the 1930s. Duncan was self-taught in mineralogy, painting and photography and was active for over fifty years in the development of mining and petroleum interests in the United States and Canada. Larry Duncan was an avid collector of shells, gems, rocks, fossils and cultural artifacts.

History / Biographical: Bruno Engler, 1915-2001, was a mountain guide, ski instructor, photographer and film maker at Banff and Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Engler arrived from Switzerland in 1939 and initially worked as a mountain guide and ski instructor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Sunshine ski area and for Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta. During the Second World War, he served as a mountain warfare instructor for the Canadian Army. Following the war, Engler worked as a free-lance photographer for the National Film Board and others; as coach of the University of Alberta Ski Team; and as a technical advisor, cameraman and actor for numerous movies made in the Banff area. Throughout his career, Engler worked as a still and motion picture photographer, both for the movie industry and for governments at all levels, as well as operating his own business, Alpine Films of Banff, Alberta.

History / Biographical: Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, 1911-ca.1958; professional papers, 1901-1957; letters, 1941-1961; scrapbook, 1923-1972; and newsclippings, 1969.; Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. History / Biographical: The Galletly family were residents of Canmore and Banff, Alberta, Canada. David Drummond Galletly, 1838-1916, served as caretaker and guide for the Cave and Basin hot springs, 1897-ca.1910. Previously he worked on the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel and operated a hotel in Canmore. At the Cave and Basin, Galletly conducted tours and became known for his Scottish humor. Other family members included wife Ethel, daughters Viva and Ethel (Fulscher), son-in-law Fred Fulscher, and grandchildren Ronald and Adelina Fulcher.

History / Biographical: Lillian Gest, 1897-1986, of Merion, Pennsylvania visited the Canadian Rockies almost every summer for sixty years, beginning in 1921. She was an active participant in "Off the Beaten Track" trips organized by Caroline Hinman between 1923 and 1933, in which young people camped, hiked, hunted and went horseback riding throughout the region between Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson. During the 1930s, Gest attended hikes of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and developed mountaineering skills at Alpine Club of Canada annual camps. Christian Hasler Jr. often served as her guide. Gest also belonged to the American Alpine Club, the Philadelphia Trails Club and the Lake O'Hara Trails Club. She spent considerable time in the Lake O'Hara region and wrote "History of Lake O'Hara" (1961), "History of Moraine Lake" (1970), and "History of Mount Assiniboine" (1979).

History / Biographical: Ulysses LaCasse (or Ulysse; or La Casse), 1888-1972, was a trail guide and national park warden at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. LaCasse came to Banff in 1908 and worked in various cooking jobs including trail cook for surveys and trail outfits. He guided Caroline Hinman's trail riding groups before joining the Canadian Army in Europe and Siberia. LaCasse accompanied Byron Harmon, Soapy Smith and Louis Freeman on their five hundred mile expedition through the Canadian Rockies, 1924. LaCasse was a long-time warden in the Castle Mountain and Lake Louise districts

History / Biographical: Ernest C. W. Lamarque, 1879-1970, was a surveyor, map maker, writer and artist at Vancouver and Oyama, British Columbia, Canada. Lamarque was born in Kent, England and emigrated to the United States in 1896, travelling to Winnipeg in 1897. He worked for the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trader at Isle a la Crosse, Fort Simpson, Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan before entering the surveying field in 1907. His survey work took him throughout British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon. In 1933-1934, he was in charge of the advance party reconnaissance for the Bedaux Subarctic Expedition. He was also involved in Alaska Highway, Royal Canadian Air Force and Whitehorn Mountain ski lift surveys.

History / Biographical: The Longstaff family, which included (at the least) Beatrice, Katharine, Gilbert, Frederick, Tom and Margaret Longstaff, were tourists and mountaineers from Sussex, England. They first visited the Canadian Rocky and Selkirk Mountains in 1903. Major F. V. (Frederick) Longstaff, 1879-1961, returned to Canada in 1909 and settled in Victoria in 1911. He was a frequent visitor to the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains throughout his life. Dr. Tom George Longstaff, 1878-1964, a renowned world mountaineer, visited with his sister Katharine in 1910 to climb in the Mount Assiniboine area. Tom Longstaff and Rudolf Aemmer made the first ascent of the north-west face of Mount Assiniboine, and Wedgwood Peak, near Mount Assiniboine, was named for Katharine Longstaff Wedgwood. Tom Longstaff visited western Canada again in 1912. An account of his Canadian experiences was included in his book, "This My Voyage," published in 1950.

William Mather, 1868-1927, emigrated to Ontario from Scotland in 1880 and came west ca.1888 to work for the Eau Claire Lumber Company on the Spray River near Banff. He worked for Raymond M. Rooper's boat house business on the Bow River and, in 1899, purchased the business. The Mather business included steamer tours in the summer and also involved winter sports on the Bow River. William Mather and Margaret McRavey Mather had four children, Jennie, Leslie, Allan and Hazel. History / Biographical: Cyril and Mary Paris were restaurant owners and skiers at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Cyril Paris, 1904-1981, was son of George Harrison Paris, 1872-1960, who settled in Banff in 1892. George Paris worked as an attendant at Dr. R. G. Brett's Grandview Hotel bathhouse, and, by 1903, Paris had established his own barber shop. He married Ida Winberg and they opened a summer tea house and ice cream parlor on Banff Avenue. In 1922, a restaurant was added to the Paris Tea Room. George Paris was active in the Banff Curling Club and the Banff Skating Club and taught figure-skating. He was an accomplished amateur photographer. George and Ida Paris had four children - Cyril, Georgina (Georgie) and twins, Herb and Ted. Cyril and his brothers were active in the early development of skiing in the Rockies. Cyril Paris was a member of the Banff Ski Club and the Ski Runners of the Canadian Rockies, and was involved with the early days of Skoki Lodge. With his wife, Mary (Howard) Paris, 1910-1989, he shared interests in skiing, winter sports and local affairs.

History / Biographical: Charles "Charlie" Clifford Carmichael Reid (1904-1984) was born near Suffield, Alberta, Canada. Charlie went to high school in Medicine Hat, Alberta and arrived in Banff in 1922 to serve his three-year pharmacy apprenticeship with Gourlay's Drug Store. After completing his apprenticeship, Charlie studied to be a pharmacist at the University of Alberta from 1926-1928. While at university, Charlie joined the Pharmacy Club and the Track Team. Charlie had dreams of opening his own pharmacy in Banff, which he did in 1936 on Banff Avenue and named it Banff Pharmacy Limited. He operated the Banff Pharmacy until his retirement in February 1977. He was known as a good employer that paid well, and known for selling French perfumes. A true entrepreneur, Charlie opened a branch store that sold general merchandise in the Banff Springs Hotel, a Curio and Gift shop across from the pharmacy, and a fur store. It is also noted that Charlie found an opportunity to sell coal to the Banff Springs Hotel, which is where he made a significant amount money. He remained in Banff until his death. He was described as a "go getter" and was known for dressing meticulously, particularly with his trademark bowtie. He was a keen and skilled golfer at the Banff Springs Golf Course (he was a member), and won the Prince of Wales trophy in the 1930's. He was an accomplished track and field athlete, captain of the canoe team, participated in water sports, and enjoyed hiking and hunting. He was good friends with George Noble (photographer), Dr. Ernest Kennedy (dentist), and Carl Rungius (artist). Charlie was a prominent Banff citizen: he served as the Registrar for births, deaths, and marriages; he served on the Banff Advisory Council; was a Charter Member of the Kinsman Club of Banff; he was a member of the Banff Curling Club; and he was a volunteer firefighter with fire brigade. When a fire broke out at the Banff Springs Hotel in the late 1920's, Charlie was one of the firefighters who helped put it out. Charlie was a bachelor until his mother died, although during this period he courted Edmee Moore, daughter of Col. Philip and Pearl (Brewster) Moore, whom he married in 1942. Charlie and Edmee Reid were friends of Mary Schaffer Warren and lived in the Warren home after Billy Warren's death. After Edmee died in 1971, Charles remarried a friend from Vancouver, Gladys McQueen, until his death on February 8th, 1984.

History / Biographical: Andy Russell, 1915-2005, was a trapper, guide and outfitter, writer, photographer, cinematographer, lecturer and environmental advocate in the Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada.; Russell was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and spent his childhood on a ranch in the foothills near Pincher Creek. He became a skilled horseman, hunter, fisherman and trapper, and, in 1936, was employed by Bert Riggall, a pioneer guide and outfitter of wilderness pack trips in the southern Rockies since 1907. He became Riggall's partner in 1939 and took over the business when Riggall retired in 1946. Andy Russell and Kathleen (Kay) Riggall married in 1938 and raised five children at their ranch bordering Waterton Lakes National Park, where family businesses included guiding, saddlehorses and ranching. Children are: Richard "Dick" H. (b.1938); Andrew Charles "Charlie" (b.1941); Harold John "John" (b.1944); Hugh Gordon Riggall "Gordon" (b.1947); Lorenda Anne "Anne" (b.1952).; Russell continued as a renowned guide and outfitter with a wealthy repeat clientele until he was forced out of guiding by 1960 with the advance of the oil industry concerns upon wilderness areas in southern Alberta and British Columbia. Russell began to write nature articles in 1945 and after 1960 concentrated upon writing, photography, film making, lecturing and ranching. He wrote for numerous magazines and newspapers, produced radio broadcasts, and, using colour motion picture photography, developed programs on wildlife and wilderness habitat research for live public performances. Russell's films launched his career as an author of popular wildlife and mountain culture books, which included Grizzly Country. In later years, he was an active writer, consultant and advocate of wilderness and environmental management and received numerous awards and honours, including Member of the Order of Canada.

History / Biographical: Iva (Stewart) Smith , 1894-1975, and Leonard James Smith, 1890-1969, were business operators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Iva Stewart and her mother Zaidee Stewart, 1875-1962, came to Banff as visitors in 1913 and decided to stay. Iva operated the Canadian Pacific Railway station news stand from 1914 until ca.1924. She married Len Smith in 1922.; After working at various other CPR facilities, including Lake Louise Chalet in the 1920s and Wapta Bungalow Camp, ca.1931, Iva Smith became manager of Becker's Bungalows on Tunnel Mountain in Banff, ca.1935 Len Smith worked at the Bow River boat house and was Captain of the "Lake Minnewanka" for over thirty years. He was also an ice-maker at Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and Banff, Alberta for forty-five years. Zaidee M. Stewart worked at the boat operation tea house and wrote poetry, publishing "Banff Holiday" in 1950.

History / Biographical: The Vaux family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were photographers, mountaineers and scientists. Mary M. Vaux, 1860-1940, George Vaux Jr., 1863-1927, and William S. Vaux Jr., 1872-1908, were the children of George Vaux (VIII) of Philadelphia. They were all involved in photography in the early 1880s and were members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia. All three were taking photographs when the family made its first trip west in 1885. The first Vaux family photographs of the Canadian mountain west were made in 1887 during a summer trip along the Canadian Pacific Railway to Glacier House in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia in 1887.; The family made frequent visits to the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains over the next two decades to study the Illecillewaet and other glaciers, photograph, paint and climb. George's and Mary's photographic work centred on the mountain landscape, while William's concentrated upon the movement and physical features of glaciers. Due to the size of their large format cameras, the two brothers took most of the photographs during these trips and Mary was responsible for all of the printing. William Vaux died in 1908 and George did not return to the Canadian mountains after 1911; however, Mary Vaux Walcott returned to the region virtually every summer for over forty years. History / Biographical: Sam Ward, 1884-1973, was a builder and finishing carpenter at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ward and Louisa Maud "Cis" Ward, 1884-1970, came to Banff in 1912. Sam Ward was also known for music hall recitations. He later lived at Victoria, British Columbia

Personal papers of Sam and Cis Ward include correspondence and cards, 1950s-1970s; and note and guest books, 1902-ca.1960s. Professional records are plans for proposed residences for Sam Ward and Sydney R. Vallance and an addition to the Homestead Hotel.
