Title
Sidehill Cougar
Date
prior to 1965
Dimensions
10.2 x 2.2 x 11.8 cm
Description
Side hill gouges, made with a fret saw using 3-ply plywood; horned goat-like figurine with separately glued ears; on left side two legs glued onto body; on right side one glued piece represents shorter legs stop symbolic mountain peaks; saw has created zig-zag appearance in wood; eyes are one bored hole through head. A sidehill Cougar is a mythical Rock Mountain creature of apparently vicious nature who, due to one side of its body having shorter legs than the other, is able to maintain easily a stance on steep mountain sides; the only escape from this animal is to run in the opposite direction so that if the Cougar follows it will fall because the position of its legs will be reversed. A.C. Leighton wished to market cheap, locally made souvenirs; this is a prototype but they were never produced in quantity.
