- History / Biographical
- The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies is a trail riding organization based in Calgary, Alberta. The organization was established in 1923 with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ride was held in 1924, and annual summer trail rides and pow-wows attracted fifteen hundred members by 1929. Many notable residents of the Bow Valley, including members of the Brewster and Moore families, Catherine Robb and Peter Whyte, and Carl Rungius have participated in trail rides. Support from the Canadian Pacific Railway ended in 1961. As of 2020, the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies remains an active organization. - Jon Whelan (1952-2022) was a researcher, historian, and collector based in Banff, Alberta. Jon had a special interest in topics related to Banff National Park and Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Jon conducted independent research, as well as research for various authors and historians, from the 1980s onwards. Jon was also an active participant in municipal politics in Banff. "For most of Jon’s life, he was engaged in community affairs and fearless in voicing an opinion. He was successful in raising public awareness and his tenacity achieved a personal goal, which was to initiate the use of video for regular Town of Banff council meetings. - Jim Davies, heliocopter pilot and artist, lives at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Davies was a pioneer in the development and execution of mountain rescue techniques particular to the needs of the mountain parks. With alpine specialist Peter Fuhrmann of Canadian National Parks, he developed the helicopter sling rescue technique. Intermountain Helicopters was established in 1972 by James M. Davies in order to purchase a Bell 206B helicopter for use in the mountains. Davies operated out of Banff under the charter of Bow Helicopters and when Okanagan Helicopters Ltd. purchased Bow Helicopters Ltd. in 1977?, it bought out Davies as well. Davies continued to fly as their employee until 1991, when he retired to pursue a career as an artist.

- History / Biographical
- Walter Ashdown, 1890-1975, was a chauffeur at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ashdown emigrated to Canada in 1904 and farmed for several years before becoming a private chauffeur, ca.1913, to prominent Calgarians prior to the First World War. He served as a dispatch rider and driver in France, returning to Canada in 1919. The following year he commenced employment with Brewster Transport Co., retiring ca.1970. During his long career, Ashdown was Brewster's chauffeur to celebrities, including royalty, politicians and actors. His 1930 drive of 81 miles in 82 minutes to deliver life-saving equipment to the Monarch Mine near Field, B.C. was widely publicized. In 1970, Ashdown received an award for one million accident-free miles.

- Brewster Transport Company is a transportation company based at Banff, Alberta. Formally organized in 1900 as W. & J. Brewster, Guides and Packers, the company expanded in 1904 into commercial development in Banff and acquired the Canadian Pacific Railway livery concession at Banff in 1905. From 1909 until his death in 1947, Jim Brewster guided the company, with Lou Crosby handling finance. Beginning in 1917, Brewster Transport entered the motorized era with touring cars, later replaced with a succession of buses. From 1920 to 1933, Bill Brewster was general manager and during this period the company acquired Royal Hawaiian Transport and the Sunshine Ski development. The company amalgamated its transportation interests with Rocky Mountain Tours in 1957, and in 1965 the company passed out of the Brewster family's hands, being sold to Greyhound Lines of Canada. Brewster Transport continues to operate as Brewster Transportation and Tours, a diversified transportation and accommodation company in the Rocky Mountains.

- James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

- Hermann Hagedorn was an American writer who was known for his biographical works, particularly on Theodore Roosevelt, as well as poetry and novels. Late in life, Hagedorn became interested in Moral Rearmament. During a visit to the movement's headquarters on Mackinac Island, Michigan in 1958, he met George McLean (Chief Walking Buffalo of the Stoney Indians), an active proponent and traveller on behalf of Moral Rearmament. Intrigued by McLean's character and philosophy, Hagedorn wrote articles as well as drafts of a biography tentatively titled "A Chief in Two Worlds," but died before the work could be completed.

- Lloyd Harmon, 1914-2000, was a professional photographer who specialized in ski, action and scenic photography at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Harmon was a son of photographer Byron Harmon and worked in his father's business with his brother, Don Harmon, ca.1933-1941 and 1945-1954. During World War II, he served with the RCAF in Burma, Italy and North Africa. After leaving Banff, Harmon worked in the oil industry at Calgary. During the 1950s he married Elizabeth Ellwood. He retired to Canada's west coast.

- Fonds consists of a broad-ranging commercial negative collection in two series. Mainly scenic, skiing and documentary views of Banff and area, the Rocky Mountains and some other Alberta and British Columbia locations. Photographs include many Banff personalities known to the photographer.

Candid, action and scenic views. -- [ca.1928-ca.1954]; predominantly 1933-[ca.1940]. -- ca.1750 items : mainly negatives; 12.5 x 17.5 cm or smaller; most are 8 x 10.5 cm or smaller. -- Series pertains to skiers, ski action and competition, ski touring; Mount Norquay, Sunshine, Assiniboine, Skoki and Yoho regions; scenic views in Banff, Jasper and Yoho National Parks and Revelstoke area; Banff Indian Days and Indigenous peoples; horses and trail riding; Banff buildings and facilities; personal and family photographs. Views were taken for personal and business purposes. Includes early vest pocket camera shots and later view camera work. Negatives are not numbered by the photographer except for a small sub-series with original numbers 1 through 86. Some negatives accompanied by duplicate views. (V108 / 1 - 1927)

Scenic and commercial views. -- [ca.1928-ca.1954]; predom.1946-1954. -- ca.575 items : mainly negatives; 12.5 x 17.5 cm or smaller. -- Series includes landscape views in Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho and Waterton National Parks, Windermere and Golden areas; Calgary and southern Alberta towns; Banff townsite, buildings and area; ski areas; Indigenous portraits; wildlife; lodges, bungalow camps, etc. -- Some views may be attributed to Don Harmon. -- Most negatives are numbered by the photographer using a block numeric system ranging from 50 to 2800. - John Marsh is Professor of Geography at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Marsh completed his Ph.D. thesis: "Man, Landscape and Recreation in Glacier National Park, British Columbia, 1880 to present," at the University of Calgary, in 1971. He specializes in research on National Parks and conservation and has written extensively on parks, wilderness and recreation. Marsh published "A History of Glacier House and Nakimu Caves, Glacier National Park, British Columbia" (Peterborough: Canadian Recreation Services) in 1979.

- James Irving McLeod, 1879-1955, was a businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. After coming to Lake Louise from Ontario in 1906, McLeod cut ice for the hotels there and was a manager for Brewster Transport Co. from ca.1912 until 1920. In 1921, McLeod and William Warren formed Rocky Mountain Tours and Transport Co. Ltd. which McLeod operated until his retirement in 1946. The firm was operated by his sons, James and Allan, and his sons-in-law, H. H. Waterhouse and R. V. Bray, until amalgamating with Brewster Transport Co. Ltd. in 1957. McLeod also had an interest in the Homestead Hotel. James McLeod was married to Evelyn Davidson McLeod, 1885-1951.
