A collection of netmaking supplies including seven shuttles, three mesh gauges, an awl, a large needle, two bobbins ? , and three mysterious sticks. (a) shuttle (24.6 x .7 x 5.1) hand carved, wooden, flat board with pointed end, and deep arch carved in other end, cut out window about half its length at pointed end has long carved spike up the middle nearly the length of the opening. Note: wood split through at point.( b) shuttle (25.7 x .5 x 2.0) as (a) but narrower and finer. Hard twist white cord wound from bottom arch up around spindle and back, then up other side. Note: warped along length. (c) shuttle (19.4 x .5 x 2.9) as (a) but smaller and harder wood with brown speckling. (d) shuttle (17.7 x .7 x 2.7) as (a) but hardwood, maple? and more carefully carved and smoothed. (e) shuttle (17.7 x .7 x 2.5) as (d) but squared at edges. Tightly twisted cord wrapped around as in (b). (f) shuttle (13.9 x .9 x 3.6) carved, flat piece of softwood, rectangular in shape with deep arches cut from each end, very roughly shaped. (g) shuttle (22.8 x .3 x 1.8) as (a) but much more streamlined. Arch at end, and window containing spindle are squared, one side has ink drawing of fishing boat and sailboat on the water and writing, "Mendon, M.M. Brooks, Paris "88" at the tip barely decipherable. "M Brooks ? Paris '88'".( h) mesh gauges (24.0 x 1.3 diam) long, smooth dowel which has been roughly rounded at each end. (hh) mesh gauge (18.0 x 1.1 diam) as (h) but shorter and smoother at ends. (i) mesh stick (20.0 x .1 x 1.3) flat, thin, extremely flexible piece of black metal with rounded ends which have been dipped in a rubber like material. (j,jj) odd sticks (10.4 x .4 x 5.6) 2 flat pieces of ivory with a .6 diam. hole drilled through at each end. (k) another odd stick (10.4 x .2 x 1.4) black plastic? stick as (j) but with two .8 cm holes, one above the other, at the ends. (l) (10.5 x .4 x .5) needle, large, steel, three cornered needle with rectangular eye set into groove at end. Note: rusting. (m) awl (13.8 x 2.5 diam) shaped wooden handle with 3.7 cm needle at end, handle teardrop shaped, nipping in to a waist at the end, then out again, flaring to a flat knob. Scribed around with double lines at each end. Cone shaped brass collar is crimped around sharp steel needle. (n,nn) bobbins (6.5 x .2 x 6.5) two thin wooden boards carved into a square with the sides curving inward slightly. Charred into the top of each is a series of squiggle lines, East-Asian writing? surrounded by a curved rectangle.
