- In Aboriginal™, Jennifer Adese explores the origins, meaning, and usage of the term "Aboriginal" and its displacement by the word "Indigenous." In the Constitution Act, 1982, the term's express purpose was to speak to the "aboriginal rights" acknowledged in Section 35(1). Yet in the wake of the Constitution's passage, Aboriginal, in its capitalized form, became far more closely aligned with Section 35(2)'s interpretation of which specific groups held those rights, and was increasingly used to describe and categorize people. More than simple legal and political vernacular, the term Aboriginal (capitalized or not) has had real-world consequences for the people it defined. Aboriginal™ argues the term was a tool used to advance Canada's cultural and economic assimilatory agenda throughout the 1980s until the mid-2010s. Moreover, Adese illuminates how the word engenders a kind of "Aboriginalized multicultural" brand easily reduced to and exported as a nation brand, economic brand, and place brand--at odds with the diversity and complexity of Indigenous peoples and communities. In her multi-disciplinary research, Adese examines the discursive spaces and concrete sites where Aboriginality features prominently: the Constitution Act, 1982; the 2010 Vancouver Olympics; the "Aboriginal tourism industry"; and the Vancouver International Airport. Reflecting on the term's abrupt exit from public discourse and the recent turn toward Indigenous, Indigeneity, and Indigenization, Aboriginal™ offers insight into Indigenous-Canada relations, reconciliation efforts, and current discussions of Indigenous identity, authenticity, and agency. -- Provided by publisher.

- Drawing attention to the ways in which creative practices are essential to the health, well-being, and healing of Indigenous peoples, The Arts of Indigenous Health and Well-Being addresses the effects of artistic endeavour on the "good life", or mino-pimatisiwin in Cree, which can be described as the balanced interconnection of physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. In this interdisciplinary collection, Indigenous knowledges inform an approach to health as a wider set of relations that are central to well-being, wherein artistic expression furthers cultural continuity and resilience, community connection, and kinship to push back against forces of fracture and disruption imposed by colonialism. The need for healing--not only individuals but health systems and practices--is clear, especially as the trauma of colonialism is continually revealed and perpetuated within health systems. The field of Indigenous health has recently begun to recognize the fundamental connection between creative expression and well-being. This book brings together scholarship by humanities scholars, social scientists, artists, and those holding experiential knowledge from across Turtle Island to add urgently needed perspectives to this conversation. - What does the phrase Me´tis peoples mean in constitutional terms? As lawyers and scholars dispute forms of Me´tis identity, and debate the nature and scope of Me´tis rights under the Canadian Constitution, understanding Me´tis experience of colonization is fundamental to achieving reconciliation. In Bead by Bead, contributors address the historical denial - at both federal and provincial levels - of outstanding Me´tis concerns and Aboriginal rights claims, in particular with respect to land, resources, and governance. Flap is beaded with three small blue triangles outlined in red and two small yellow triangles outlined in bright blue, forming a semi circular shape with a vertical line of pearly pink beads outlined in green at its centre. Flap edged with pearly pink and green beads. Edging of red and light brown beads around bottom point of purse. Back body of purse tan buckskin, but fringes, flap, strap and edging band of back are white doeskin. Flap ties closed with white buckskin thongs.

Small rounded buckskin flap has four flying light and dark blue geometric figures and is edged with dark blue beads. Bottom of purse is fringed. Short carrying strap of buckskin notched along one edge and lined with pink orange satin, inside completely lined with satin. Closes with buckskin covered toggle attached through fawn hide and fastens through hole in small piece of buckskin sewn to underside of flap.

- Small, rounded, flat buckskin bag with short lighter fringe around sides and bottom. Lightly beaded on front with single flower at centre with many petals outlined in blue black, and petals filled in with blue black and white seed beads. Four white stems and outlined black leaves curve from the blossom towards the corners of the purse. An alternately beaded white and black stem rises from the top of the blossom with a white and black trifoliate mass at the top, and two alternately beaded white and black bird's legs support the blossom at the bottom. The mouth of the purse is trimmed with white and black beads, as well as a small pointed tab with a buttonhole slit which is sewn to the middle of the back opening. The back of the purse is two pieces of buckskin patched together.

Large beaded geometric motif at centre of front with green diamond and triangles at centre accented with pink and red, the whole figure outlined with a white band following the shape. The back has a green and white outlined open cross with a white triangle and diamond hanging from its base having red accents and green centres. Front and back edges of the sides and bottom are bound with a thick band of white and red bars beaded over the seams. Rounded flap has same red and white trimming its edges with two holes cut through at middle for tying with a double buckskin wrapped rolled handles. Inside completely lined with light brown cotton fabric.

- A long, flat, rectangular buckskin purse completely beaded on the front, short buckskin flap, fringes across the bottom, and rolled buckskin loop handle wrapped with beads and a patch of brown fur at the middle. Front completely beaded with blue background and large simple motif of a red diamond with red chevron above and below, all connected with white outline bands. Sides and top trimmed with an edging of notched buckskin. Flap formed from an extension of the back folded over at the top and notched at the edge. Flap fastens through two small slits on each side with a doubled thong sewn to the front of the purse. Handle wrapped with red beads at the bottom and white at the centre covered with the patch of fur and sewn to the sides of the purse through small pieces of fringed buckskin at the ends. Front of purse lined with purple fabric printed with musical instruments.
