History / Biographical: Maryalice Harvey Stewart, 1923-2001, was Director of the Archives of the Canadian Rockies (now Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies) at Banff, Alberta, Canada from 1965 to 1976. She continued to do historical projects and was known for her knowledge of Banff and Rocky Mountain history.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of materials collected by, and pertaining to, Maryalice Harvey Stewart. Content includes daybooks, notebooks, correspondence and various notes collected by Maryalice during her time working as Director of the Archives of the Canadian Rockies (now the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies Archives and Special Collections); research materials pertaining to the town of Banff, the Brewster family and other local subjects; personal interest materials, including cassette recordings of documentaries and lectures; personal materials, including correspondence, photographs, Maryalice's birth certificate, certifications and awards, and sheet music; and other related materials. (a) finger pick set (3.4 x 2.0 diam) four metal frames that fit over the finger tip,Y-shaped with the arms of the Y forming an adjustable band that fits around finger, and the stem of the Y passing up over the tip of the finger and down the back halfway to the band, tip is crimped in stiff fold, 3 have solder at the tip to form a longer point. (MFG: Fitrite).(b) finger pick set (2.5 x 1.8 x 2.0) six metal rings that fit over the finger tips, adjustable band has circles cut out along it, flame shaped fingernail rises from band, curling inward slightly, and with cut out circle at middle. (mfg: National) (c) finger pick (2.5 x 1.9 x 2.0) as (b) but without cut out circles (mfg: Artisto) (d) finger picks (3.0 x 1.7 x 1.9) two metal bands that wrap around finger tip, widening near the end, then narrowing to a point that extends off to one side of the finger. (4.7 x .8 x 1.1) a long, half round, hollow metal bar with six incised rings spaced evenly along the length. (mfg: Kamiki). (k) slides (7.2 x 1.7 diam) two heavy, solid, brass rods (used to slide over strings when playing the guitar Hawaiian style) (1) peg (5.0 x .9 x 2.3) white, cast plastic peg with long shaft and flattened key with finger depression each side, ferrules around top of shaft. (m) bridge (4.7 x 1.4 x 1.9) low, unfinished wood bridge with small dark support perpendicularly across under middle, short legs thicken slightly at base, series of small notches across top, some deliberately cut into wood, some worn in odd places from strings (mfg: Grover).

Description: Bamboo musical instrument made of two hollow bamboo tubes suspended on split bamboo frame of three thin upright sticks supported in holes cut in hollow bamboo tube at bottom. Two flat pieces of bamboo are secured crosswise into the split uprights and each holds one of the bamboo tubes which are hung on them by a semicircular hole which fits into a notch on the crosspiece, half of the upper part of these tubes have been cut away lengthwise and at their bottom two small legs have been carved which fit into wells cut in the bamboo tube at the bottom. When the instrument is held by one of the uprights and shaken, the hollow bamboo clappers strike the sides of this well and make a musical sound.
