History / Biographical: Edwin W. Mills, 1899-1979 was a resident of Hamilton, Ontario. He attended Ridley College and the Royal Military College, serving overseas from 1917 to 1919 in the Royal Flying Corps and the RAF. Mills was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada from 1935-1953, attending the ACC Assiniboine Camp in 1935 as well as the first camps at the Columbia Icefields and the Bugaboos. Mills frequently hiked at Lake O'Hara, Emerald Lake, and Bow Lake. In 1937, Mills made several ascents on Ellesmere and Baffin Islands with the Canadian Arctic Foundation.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of records relating to Edwin Mills activities with the Alpine Club of Canada, 1920-1946.; Moving images include 4 reels of 16mm films: Alpine camp, 1935; Grass (2 reels); and Everest. History / Biographical: Robin Cyril (Bob) Hind, 1911-2000, was an electrical engineer and mountaineer at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Hind was born on a farm in northern Alberta was educated at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. He was a Life Member of ACC, joining in 1933, and attended over 30 ACC camps, often with his family. Hind received the Silver Rope Award in 1935, was recipient of Centennial Medal, and served the ACC in offices of President, Vice-President and Chairman of Hut Committee.; In 1948, Bob Hind married Margaret (Peggy) Trotter, a fellow mountaineer and skier. Together they had two children. After Peggy Hind was killed in an avalanche in 1955, Hind married Marjory Bugler, and the couple had three more children. Marjory (Marj) Hind was a homemaker and mountaineer.; During his extensive mountaineering career, Bob Hind climbed most of the significant peaks in Rockies and Selkirks, including some first ascents. He also climbed in Wales and the Alps. Hind was active in the Calgary Tennis Club, the Boy Scout movement and was a member of the American Alpine Club and The Alpine Club, London. Bob Hind worked on electrical projects in Canada and Europe.

History / Biographical: Arthur Oliver Wheeler (1860-1945) DLS, ALS, BCLS, was born in Ireland, arriving in Canada in 1876. Wheeler was a mountaineer, co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada (1906), and Dominion Land Surveyor. In 1913, Wheeler was appointed Boundary Commissioner and tasked with photo surveying the Alberta / British Columbia interprovincial boundary.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of 53 diaries pertaining to personal life, travel, office work, and Alpine Club of Canada camps. Diaries range in date from 1885 to 1944. Also included are two volumes/scrapbooks compiled by A.O. Wheeler. Both volumes include numerous articles, newspaper clippings, letters, ACC brochures and notices addressed to ACC members. Volume one covers the period 1902 to 1913; volume two includes materials from 1914 to 1940. A inventory of both volumes, compiled by ACC member Paul Geddes, is also included. Additionally there are 7 volumes of notes corresponding to the photographs A.O. Wheeler took. Photographic material consists of 66 albums which contain approximately 5000 photographs, black and white positive prints from glass negatives, all 12 x 16 cm. The first album is dated 1915, the last 1924. Some of the albums contain a small map printed on linen. Each album contains an index to the photographs taken for the Alberta - British Columbia Interprovincial Boundary photo survey and are organized by Station, Bearing, and Subject.

History / Biographical: E. O. (Edward Oliver) Wheeler, 1890-1962, was a Canadian surveyor, soldier and mountaineer. Wheeler was born in Ottawa, the son of A. O. (Arthur Oliver) Wheeler, Dominion Land Surveyor and founder of the Alpine Club of Canada. E. O. Wheeler served in the Royal Engineers in World War I and received the Military Cross in 1916 and the Legion of Honour (France). In 1941 he was appointed Surveyor-General of India and in 1943 was knighted by King George VI. During World War II, he served as Director of the Frontier Circle of the Survey of India. Wheeler retired to Lavington, British Columbia in 1947. Throughout his life, Wheeler was involved in world mountaineering. He worked on the mapping of the 1922 expedition of Mount Everest and was active in the Alpine Club of Canada, serving as its President from 1950 to 1954

History / Biographical: Rhoda Rouse (1902-1978) was born in Daysland Alberta (then N.W.T.), the daughter of John James and Eva Olive Williamene (Russell) Rouse. Unmarried and with no children, she was a member of the Class of 1923 in the Arts program at the University of British Columbia. She was a teacher at Maryland School south of Ogden and Pine Creek school near DeWinton, Alberta for several years and thereafter worked for Royalite Oil in Calgary for approximately 20 years. Upon her retirement at Royalite she returned to substitute teaching in the 1960s. She was a lifetime member of the Alpine Club of Canada, joining in 1944 and was active in the club and in the ACC camps. She spent much of her life in the outdoors and was a photography enthusiast. She was a friend of Joe Smith of Silver City.

Scope & Content: The Rhoda Rouse fonds pertains mainly to Alpine Club of Canada mountaineering camps including photographs of Assiniboine, O'Hara and Minnewanka areas and landscapes. History / Biographical: John Jaeggi, 1899-1961, came to Canada in 1924 from Switzerland and worked in various capacities for the Alpine Club of Canada. He was an outfitter and hunting guide in British Columbia and bought a farm in the Columbia Valley in 1934. In 1940 Jaeggi built a log tea room on Sulphur Mountain in Banff. He was instrumental in the development of other tourist facilities on Sulphur Mountain, including a gondola lift completed in 1959. Edith Ashton Jaeggi, 1903-1986, was owner of the Upper Hot Springs Hotel and married John Jaeggi in 1949. Together, they renovated the hotel and served as its proprietors.

History / Biographical: The Alpine Club of Canada, the national mountaineering club, was co-founded in 1906 by A. O. Wheeler and Elizabeth Parker, and other like-minded climbers. The club espoused scientific study and exploration, cultivation of art, public education, acquisition of climbing skills, and preservation of natural areas within the mountainous regions of Canada. Through a national executive, local sections and volunteer committees, the club provided climbing camps, clubhouse, huts, and publications, including the Canadian Alpine Journal. ACC expeditions and projects resulted in pioneer exploration, first ascents, and included mountain warfare training during the Second World War. In recent years, the club's membership has increased dramatically with the popularity of climbing and its programs have evolved to serve the needs of unguided climbers using sophisticated technical aids.

History / Biographical: Dr. Jean Knox (McDonald) Petrie, born 1913, was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, Edmonton Section during the 1930s and 1940s, attending the Alpine Club of Canada summer camps from 1937-1940, 1942 and 1946 as well as making many weekend climbs in the Jasper area with Captain E. R. Gibson. In 1938 she was one of the four women to make a first ascent of Mount Columbia by women, as well as Mount Forbes in 1940. Married in 1960 to Robert Petrie (died 1966), Dr. Jean Petrie worked in Ottawa, Ontario (1940-1945) in munitions gauge testing for the National Research Council. Following the war, she worked as an astrophysicist for the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, British Columbia (1945-1966) and taught at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. (1966-1971).

Scope & Content: Fonds relate to mountaineering with the Alpine Club of Canada. The fond consists of three series: I. Margaret Gold Brine climbed in the Canadian Rockies and the Alps with ascents that included Mount Edmonton, Mount Assiniboine, Mount Robson and Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn.

History / Biographical: Frances Kathleen Montgomery, 1904-1989, and Esme Gabrielle (Gaie) Neufville Taylor, 1910-1994, met during their service in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War. After the war they shared a house in London and Waterloo, Ontario. Montgomery was a university professor in Romance languages; Taylor worked as a secretary and writer. Montgomery retired in 1971 and the women moved to Victoria, B.C. They were avid photographers, gardeners, readers, climbers and campers. Montgomery and Taylor travelled throughout Ontario and west to Alberta, B.C. and the United States. They attended several Alpine Club of Canada camps between 1959 and 1969

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of three series: I. Photographs, 1929-1976; II. Motion pictures, 1936-1964; III. Textual records, 1959-1994. Photographs and films pertain mainly to travel and camping in Europe, Ontario, western Canada and the United States. ACC camps in the Bugaboos, 1959, Fryatt Creek, 1960, Maligne Lake, 1962, and others are documented. Montgomery appears to have made the 35 mm photographs and the films, while Taylor appears to have made the 127-format negatives and superslide transparencies. History / Biographical: Lawrence (Laurie, Larry) Allison Duncan, 1890-1978, was a photographer, businessman and collector at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Duncan came to Alberta in 1908 with his parents, Thomas Henry Duncan and Elizabeth Jane (Gill) Duncan, who settled on a ranch at Okotoks. For a time, Laurie Duncan operated a photography business in Calgary, specializing in views of Calgary, Indians, ranching and the Canadian Rockies. He attended Alpine Club of Canada camps in the 1920s, after becoming a member in 1920 with his graduating climb of Mount President, 1919. He was active in professional photography into the 1930s. Duncan was self-taught in mineralogy, painting and photography and was active for over fifty years in the development of mining and petroleum interests in the United States and Canada. Larry Duncan was an avid collector of shells, gems, rocks, fossils and cultural artifacts.

History / Biographical: Malcolm Daniel Geddes, 1866-1927, was a journalist, publisher and mountaineer at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Geddes was one of the founders of the "Farmers and Ranch Review" in 1904, and served as vice-president and editor until his death. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1917, was active in ACC summer camps and served as Honorary Secretary from 1924 to 1926. Geddes was killed in a mountaineering accident on Mount Lefroy in 1927.

History / Biographical: Parks Canada administers national parks in Canada. The agency has been administered by several government departments and undergone numerous name changes over the years. Most recently it was known as the Canadian Parks Service. Parks Canada is responsible for the administration of mountain parks and, in some cases, townsites within these parks. Until 1990, it administered the town of Banff in Banff National Park. Parks Canada provides a variety of services to visitors and residents pertaining to interpretive and visitor information; trail, resource and wildlife management; fire protection, mountaineering search and rescue and avalanche control; facilities and utilities; townsite services etc.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of material pertaining to the mountain parks of western Canada.; I.A. Banff National Park photograph collection, 1903-1965 (predominant 1920s-1950s), ca.1756 prints and negatives. Pertains mainly to Banff townsite and developments and facilities within the park. Included are private and government buildings, dwellings, roads and utilities; resource and wildlife development and management; visitor facilities; lodges, hotels and bungalow camps; warden and fire protection activities; Banff events; Norman Sanson trips and expeditions.; I.B. Banff National Park warden service photographs, motion pictures and documentation pertaining to wardens, warden activities and cabins, wildlife management; ca.11,000 items. Series includes 2 National Parks Service motion pictures "Hunting without a gun",1930 and Stalking big game", 1930.; I.C. Lantern slides, 2 sets (accn.3783); includes CPR lecture set, ca.1915, 145 items, and Canadian Rockies lecture set, ca.1920, 54 items, accompanied by lecture notes (stored with textual material M317).; I.D. Cave and Basin project; copies of mainly snapshot prints acquired by the Cave and Basin restoration and re-development project, 1981-1985, from various individuals, 204 items.; I.E. Yoho National Park collected photographs, ca.90 photographs : prints, pertain to Yoho National Park landscape, scenery, railway, places and facilities, including Field. Accompanied by 3 letters. Series consists of unpublished reports and management plans; visitor registers, summit registers, cabin and fire lookout registers (some with photographs); register of pack parties, Banff National Park, 1922-1933; maps and plans, including annotated warden service maps; warden records; surveyor notebooks; and transcripts and ephemera pertaining to ceremonies and events. Reports pertain to archaeological sites and research, national parks history, warden service, coal mining in the Bankhead area, predator studies, Cave and Basin, Radium Hot Springs, Ya Ha Tinda Ranch and other sites.
