- History / Biographical
- The Glacier House was originally built in 1886 to remove the burden of heavy dining cars by acting as one of multiple attractive pit stops for CPR passengers to take their meals. The building was expanded multiple times over the following 3 decades to accommodate a growing demand for overnight accommodation and increased railway traffic. Glacier House became less marketable by the 20's as dining service improved onboard trains, and the building closed in 1925. Plans were made for new extensions in 1926, but these were never realized.

- File consists of 3 printed posters and 2 pages with blueprints/illustrations. Content pertains to colour advertisements for the Canadian Pacific Railroad (one promoting a new route to Thunder Bay via Winnipeg on the CPR, one advertising 'The Red Letter Day' in 1986 as the CPR opened up a direct line from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts, and one reprint of a poster, date unknown, which originally promoted the CPR in the early 20th century). Also consists of a blueprint design for a proposed extension to the original Glacier House building in the Selkirks (dated 1926) and one print copy of a painted illustration depicting another proposed building design for the Glacier House, date unknown. The blueprint and illustration are possibly more recent copies of older items, and therefore a later date range of [ca. 1940 to ca. 1970] has been added to this file description.

- History / Biographical
- Justin James McCarthy (Jimmy) Simpson, 1877-1972, was a trapper, guide and outfitter and lodge owner at Banff and Bow Lake, Alberta, Canada. Born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Simpson was sent to Canada by his family in 1896. He worked briefly at Laggan (Lake Louise), Alberta for the Canadian Pacific Railway, travelled extensively and returned to the Rockies to work on the trail and trap. By the early 1900s, he was a successful guide and outfitter with Carl Rungius and the Alpine Club of Canada as clients. Starting in 1920, Simpson began building Num-Ti-Jah Lodge at Bow Lake as a base for hunting and climbing parties. Simpson and Williamina (Billie) Ross Reid, 1891-1968, married in 1916 and had three children. The lodge was run mainly by Billie Simpson and in 1945 the business was turned over to Jimmy Simpson Jr., 1922-2003 . Daughters Margaret Simpson, 1917-1941, and Mary Simpson (Hallock), 1919-2002, were internationally-famous figure skaters.

- Fonds consists of papers, photographs and sound recording produced by and pertaining to Jimmy Simpson and the Simpson family. Material is arranged in seven series.
- I. Jimmy Simpson Sr. papers and photographs, ca.1901-1972, ca.74 cm of textual records, 23 photograph albums (ca.2875 prints), 425 transparencies. Includes business and personal correspondence, business records and subject files, 1903-1972; literary papers, 1912-1972; and other papers, 1903- 1957. Business records pertain mainly to guiding, outfitting and hunting operations. Correspondents include Carl Rungius, J. Monroe Thorington, L. S. Amery, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, William S. Ladd, C. Pertains to one b&w image of the Banff Springs Hotel set in the forests of the Bow Valley (possibly produced by Nicholas Morant but unknown); one colour image of the Whitehorn Sedan Lift in Lake Louise showing a woman riding the lift, taken by Nicholas Morant; one colour poster promoting "Canadian Pacific Railway Company Steamship Lines Atlantic Service", annotated by Nicholas Morant on the back. All posters with small print captions at the bottom.

- Items were originally stored separately. Poster of Banff Springs Hotel was stored out of poster tube, secured with white string. Paper label wrapped around said: "OLD PHOTO BSH Bow View" Poster image of sedan lift was originally in poster tube with Canadian Pacific label that read: "LAKE LOUISE SEDAN LIFT POSTERS 1960" Poster of CP Steamship was in poster tube labelled "CPR LAKE BOAT ADVERTISING (FRAMED) PICTURE" , numbered "36" at top, with shipping address label: "Canadian Pacific SUPPLIES 1 Upshover { Req. - File consists of 5 colour advertising posters, 2 calendar pages, and one hand-drawn illustration. Content pertains to 'The Banff Chairlift on Mt. Norquay'; a Laurie Signs Ltd. ad with a Nicholas Morant image and metal hanger (formerly a page from a calendar, date unknown); a 'Bourne Bros.' calendar dated '1913', featuring a large image of a woman named 'Berenice' on a metal hanger; 4 red and white Royal York Hotel advertising posters with cardboard attachments on back to stand upright; and an illustration addressed to Nicholas Morant (unknown artist), drawn in pencil, depicting a character covered in porcupine quills (?) with an easel, painting the message 'dere Marantz thanks 4 the encouragement'.

- 4 Royal York Hotel posters formerly stored in individual brown paper packaging with cardboard supports inside, labelled 'Royal York Hotel Poster' on the front of each in black marker. Original packaging has been removed for conservation reasons.
