History / Biographical
Boris Roubakine, 1908-1974, was a renowned concert pianist, adjudicator, educator and lecturer. Roubakine was born in Switzerland and studied at the Ribaupierre Institute. He settled in Canada following the Second World War and taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario, at the University of Calgary, Alberta, and, from 1957 to 1974, at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Banff, Alberta. Roubakine was an ardent amateur fine art photographer and alpinist and travelled extensively.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of a selection of fine art photographs arising from Roubakine's travels throughout Canada, the United States and South America. Much of the selection (ca.1100 items) pertains to the Canadian Rockies, particularly flora, fauna and landscape views from Kananaskis, Assiniboine, Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, Field, Yoho Valley, Lake O'Hara, Banff-Jasper Highway, Jasper, Maligne Lake, Mount Robson, Kootenay National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park areas. An additional ca.500 items pertain to the region from Vancouver through southern and central British Columbia. Other major groups, of which only a small portion was retained, were trips to Alaska and aerial cloud photography.
Notes
Material in boxes 1 through 39 was selected by Roubakine as a bequest of what he felt were his best photographs. Material in other boxes received were added to the bequest by the executor. Only a selection of the latter material was retained. Material was boxed by the executors. Accompanied by notebook and bequest documents
