History / Biographical
Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

History / Biographical
Patrick Edward John Fuller, 1928-2007, was born and raised in Banff, Alberta. Fuller attended high school in Banff and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1951, earning a number of academic awards and scholarships. In 1965 he married Catherine Collier. Fuller worked for the Lands and Development Services Branch of the Department of Mines and Resources doing highway reconnaissance and preliminary and construction surveys in the Rocky Mountains, 1945-1947. Fuller also worked as a geophysicist for Shell Canada.

History / Biographical
Muriel McFarlane Gratz, 1901-1992, was born in Alberton, Prince Edward Island to a Presbyterian minister, Reverend Humphrey, and Ella Jean Gratz. Muriel and her three brothers and sister moved west in 1907 with their parents to homestead at Sunnyslope, Alberta. Muriel boarded with relatives in Calgary while she attended Crescent Heights High School, then studied mathematics at the University of Alberta, graduating with distinction and a Governor General's gold medal.
Muriel moved to Banff in 1925 and taught at the Banff High School for 41 years. She was principal at the High School for many years, retiring in 1966. Upon her retirement, a mathematics scholarship was established in her honour. Muriel Gratz enjoyed hiking, skiing, curling, golf and travelling and shared her love of the outdoors with her students, initiating student hikes to Lake O'Hara and Skoki for the Banff High School students. Muriel was an active member of the Soroptimist Club, the Curling Club, the Golf Club, the Alpine Club of Canada, the Alberta Teacher's Association and the Banff Seniors for many years. She was honored with the Soroptomist Woman of Distinction award in 1987 and received the Bow Valley Athletic Achievement Award in 1989.
Muriel was good friends with Lizzie Rummel and spent many summers helping out at the mountain camps including Assiniboine. Muriel travelled extensively with her good friend Anne Derrick, a teacher at the Banff High School.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists primarily of Muriel Gratz's teacher daybooks and notebooks re math tests and student results, 1949-1964, 12 volumes. The daybooks include schedules, interview notes, incident and discipline reports, minutes of meetings, etc. Some notebooks contain loose notes, receipts, etc. Fonds also include a framed certificate of Soroptomist International life membership, a framed retirement commemoration and a framed portrait of Anne Derrick, a friend and colleague of Muriel Gratz as well as a founding member of the Soroptomist Club of Banff. Portraits of Muriel Gratz and Anne Derrick are by Roy Andersen, 1989. Also included in the fonds are a University of Alberta graduation photograph of Muriel Gratz, 1924, a Women of Distinction Award certificate, 1986, and a commemorative diploma, Banff School District, 1988. A CD of digitized photographs taken from a photograph album, accompanied by colour photocopies of the images is also included in the fonds.

History / Biographical
Leonard Henry Leacock, 1904-1992, was a musician and educator at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Leacock was born in England and raised in Banff, Alberta. He was educated in Banff and Boston and through the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, and the Royal School of Music, London, England. Leacock joined the staff of Mount Royal College, Calgary as a piano teacher in 1924 and retired from teaching ca.1989. His music career also included performing, composing and adjudicating. Throughout his life, Leacock was an avid mountaineer and photographer. He took numerous hiking and horse trips in the Banff, Jasper and Yoho areas and sometimes worked in trail camps or as a guide.
Scope & Content
Fonds consist of four separate series: A. I.A. Photography: negatives; B. I.C. Photography: transparencies, 35mm; C. I.D. Photography: prints; D. I.B. Photography: lantern slides.
Fonds consists mainly of scenic transparency views arising from Leacock's climbs, hikes, horse and car trips in the Canadian Rockies and Selkirks from the Crowsnest Pass through Jasper National Park, ca.1939 to 1984. Also included are travels in Yukon, Canada and the United States, including Alaska. Negatives date from 1925 to 1940? and pertain to Assiniboine, Lake Louise, Banff, Banff-Jasper, Columbia Icefield and other mountain areas; also natural history, including wildflowers and wildlife. A small number of negatives are accompanied by prints. Other prints pertain to Leacock, family, events and scenic views.
Textual records include letters, 1926-1986, 1 cm; diaries, 1930-1934, 1943, 2 items; scrapbooks and clippings, 1931-1936, ca.6 cm; manuscript scores of vocal and instrumental music, before 1985, 8 cm; concert programmes for which Leacock wrote the notes, 1962-1969, 37 items; other concert programmes, [ca.1945]-1986, 2 cm; writings, 1924, 1928, n.d., 4 items; other material, 1931-1987, 8 items. Diaries pertain to Leacock's personal life, giving details of musical, writing, artistic and dramatic activities; teaching and tour guiding; hikes and climbs in the Canadian Rockies; and friends, including Herbert Hahn and Stewart Cameron. Some letters are from Earle Birney, 1926-1978.
Sound recordings are interviews with Leacock re his career in music, including performing, composing and teaching; also music played by Leacock. Also includes one cassette recording [ca.1985-1992] of Doug Hawkes interviewing Leacock re: a pack trip he went on around 1931 between Gleichen and Jasper and back; cassette includes a story of a camp trip at Castlegar.

The Banff School District No.102 provided elementary and secondary education for Banff and area from 1887 until 1994, when it was replaced by the Canadian Rockies Regional Division No.12. During the 1970s and 1980s the district assumed, in the absence of a municipal government, responsibilities for aspects of local government as well as school administration. After 1990, the district's responsibilities strictly pertained to public education.
