The man looks frightened and has his arms half up in the air almost as if he is about to run away. In the foreground and around there feet is a lot of snow. The woodsman is wearing a hat and a heavy coat with a belt tied tight at the center.

The large background mountain is coloured medium blue at the top, with lower slopes of green. Areas of loose rock are sketched in near the centre of the mountain; These small areas are brown-grey with touches of orange indicating (larch?) trees. The sky is light blue.
