The film was directed by Robert Altman and co-written by Robert Altman and Alan Rudolph. Key stars in the film include Paul Newman (Buffalo Bill), Frank Kaquitts (Sitting Bull), Joel Grey (The Producer), and Kevin McCarthy (The Publicist). Other actors include Harvey Keitel, Allan F. Nicholls, Geraldine Chaplin, John Considine, Fred N. Larsen, Pat McCormick and Burt Lancaster. The movie was filmed on location at the Stoney Nakoda reservation in Morley, Alberta, and many of the film extras were from this community. Frank Kaquitts, b.1925, is an artist and former Stoney Indian chief at Morley, Alberta, Canada. Kaquitts was born at Hobbema, Alberta, Canada and was educated at Morley. He studied art under Peter Whyte in Banff and attended the Banff School of Fine Arts. He has taught art and served as a newspaper columnist.
