He has also climbed in the Interior Ranges of British Columbia as well as the St. Elias Range of Alaska and the Alps. Boles is also an avid skier and spent 13 years on the Canadian Ski Patrol System and is a member of the Ski Friends program in Lake Louise.

- James Gordon Burles, b.1949, is a poet, surveyor and civil servant at Banff, Alberta, Canada. A native of Banff, Burles is a student of the Canadian Rockies. In Burles' own words, much of his poetry is inspired by four environments: the life and history of Banff National Park, the town of Banff, the Okanagan Valley, and Calgary.
- Scope & Content
- Fonds consists mainly of poems by Gordon Burles, 1970-2017. Manuscripts contain about twenty-seven hundred poems, mainly in free verse, some with revisions. Poems are numbered in chronological order. About 2016 Burles stopped numbering each poem. The year of creation is indicated with each poem. Some poems pertain to mountain personalities such as Bill Peyto, Norman Sanson, Margaret Stone, Walter D. Wilcox, Walter J. Phillips, Conrad Kain, and Georgia Engelhard. Many are surrealist or nonsense poems and many deal with the Cemetery Tea House, an imaginary teahouse frequented by various characters.
- Fonds consists of three series: I : Poetry Manuscripts; II : Prose and research; III: Digital typeset copies of published poems
- Some poems deal with Burle's parents and family. The collection also holds fifty-three books and booklets, self-published by the author from 1984 to 2017. The books published from 2003 to 2017 contain all the poems which the author considers worth preserving. Some in one book have been revised in a later book. Some poems were revised more than once. The three books published in 1984, 1986, and 1990 are considered by the author as early works. Only the poems in those books that the author considered worth publishing have been republished in the 2003-2017 books. Names in the poem titles are usually made up.
- Some titles are tongue-in-cheek. There were so many poems that the author resorted to names like "Portrait for Bertrand Clerihew-Guggenheim" to make it easier. Some titles, of course, are obviously connected to the content of the poem. Many titles were long enough to preclude the difficulty of getting the graphic designer to centre the title over the poem! Also included are manuscripts, research materials, articles, and notes etc. regarding Bill Peyto, the Copper Mountain Mine, Banff National Park museum, logging roads in the Johnson Lake area, and the Sanson-Bethune connection.
- Photographs pertain to remains of hay rake and wagon in the Third Vermilion Lake area (1975) and remains of the Queen of the Hills Mine, above Silver City (1977).
- CD-ROMS's contain typeset copies of manuscripts by Gordon Burles in Pagemaker, In Design and .pdf file formats. Manuscripts include "The Jagged Harmony," 2005, "An Avenue Without End," 2005, "That Perfect Elsewhere," n.d., "Much Like A Dream," 2004, "All the Universe of Sight," 2006, "Those Grand Poplars," 2004, "Lords of Many Orchards: Selected Best Poems of Gordon Burles," 2003, "That trellis of tombs: Further Selected Poems of Gordon Burles," 2004, "The Closing of Many Doors: More Poems by Gordon Burles," 2006.
- II : Prose and research includes "Life story of James Gordon Burles," 2022
- Notes
- Books of poetry published by Gordon Burles are located in the Whyte Museum Archives Library 05.1/B92. In 2018 Gordon Burles compiled a listing of the original poems that were edited and re-published. This list is in the M196 document file, and is also a PDF attached to the fonds level record

- The A. O. Wheeler Hut is located at Rogers Pass National Historic Site in Glacier National Park. The hut was built between 1945 and 1946, and it is a Recognized Federal Historic Building. The hut is named after one of the founding members of the Alpine Club of Canada, Arthur Oliver Wheeler. A. O. Wheeler was the first President of the Alpine Club of Canada, and he served as Honorary President of the Club for almost twenty years. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website: "Carrying on the tradition of the Glacier House which was closed in 1925 and now exists only as a few concrete foundation pieces, the Wheeler Hut serves as a base for the legendary powder skiing of the Rogers Pass area. In summer there are numerous opportunities for climbing and hiking. This is the birthplace of alpinism in North America. Many of the routes are steeped in tradition and history, an interesting fact to remember as you reach for that next impeccable quartzite handhold or take that next footstep along one of the many trails which wind through the lush cedar forests that dominate the region. This is the one and only ACC hut which can be reached by vehicle in summer. Winter access is a mere 2 km along a well-broken and level trail. It is difficult to convey to the first time visitor the number and quality of the summer and winter day trips possible from the hut. The potential is outstanding from this single hut including summer hikes to Asulkan Pass or up the Great Glacier Trail to the Illecillewaet Glacier, summer climbs to Sapphire Col, Mt. Sir Donald, and Avalanche Peak; winter ski tours to Young’s Peak, the Seven Steps of Paradise, the Dome Glacier – the list goes on and on. Go and explore for yourself, you will not be disappointed! The Wheeler Hut is quite luxurious! A propane system provides the cooking and lighting, with two wood stoves for heating. The hut sleeps 30 in summer and 24 in winter."
- Scope & Content

The sub-series is separated into individual hut registers, arranged by date:

- According to the Alpine Club of Canada website and their Backcountry Huts: Bow Hut Info Sheet: "The original Bow Hut project was initiated by Peter Fuhrmann, funded by Peter and Catharine Whyte and was constructed in 1968 by members of various groups including the Calgary Ski Club and the ACC. The hut was built near Bow Glacier to facilitate ski tourers and mountaineers entering the Wapta via Bow Lake, the easiest and most natural route to the icefields. Fiberglass igloos had been established at both the Peyto Glacier and Balfour Pass in the years prior, and with the building of a deluxe 14-person facility at a location between the two, the vision of a system of huts on the Wapta/Waputik Icefields was taking shape. None of those responsible for the project, however, could have predicted the amount of use and the level of abuse that the original Bow Hut would endure. The hut was abused from the beginning, and saw very little regular maintenance or upkeep. By the 1980s the place was a total hole. The hut was used as a flop house, the snow within several hundred feet of the hut had been contaminated by the outhouses and by indiscriminate waste disposal, and some estimates put the number of users per year at 7,000 (19 people per night at a facility which was built to sleep 14!). The hut which was described upon its completion as the “the Ritz” had metamorphosed into the “Bow Ghetto”. By the mid-1980s it was evident that the facility required radical change. In 1989, under the direction of the ACC’s Huts Committee Chairman Mike Mortimer, that radical change took place. The original hut had been built on a site which was non-porous and therefore had no drainage – a problem that led to the contaminated water and snow. Plans were made for a new hut in a more environmentally sensitive location and fund-raising began. The new Bow Hut was constructed for $98,000, raised primarily through the Calgary and Edmonton sections of the Club. Design concerns in the new hut included proper waste disposal, spacious and bright common areas and sleeping rooms which were both increased in size from the original hut and separated from the common areas to facilitate use by may groups at one time. The palatial new Bow Hut was opened in the fall of 1989 to rave reviews and is presently operated by the ACC. The hut today is a far cry from the original Balfour and Peyto fiberglass igloos, which a Banff Warden predicted in the late ’60s “will only serve the few hardy ski mountaineers who can accept the hardships of carrying and skiing with heavy loads and are willing to put up with discomfort during the night in bad weather”. It’s an even further cry from the abused state of the original Bow Hut and now serves as a stopover for many summer and winter trips."

- Custom red brown camera case containing a camera, recorder, and various equipment and accessories.a) Red brown suitcase that has been customized to carry cameras and their equipment. The outside has reinforced leather corners and silver hardware. The outside has the initials “J. R. G.” on the top and bottom sides, as well as under the handle. Inside, the case has a brown plaid lining. The bottom of the case has been fitted with a custom made wood, cream coloured apparatus that is designed to hold (c). It comes apart into two pieces - the base, which is not removable, and the lid, which slides out to the right once it has been unhooked from the latch built into the base n the left hand side. The lid of the suitcase reads “J. R. GRICE / 9920 - 75 ST / EDMONTON / ALBERTA”. The foam on the apparatus has worn off, leaving black dust like particles in the suitcase. There are a set of two keys hanging from a brown strap connecting the lid to the base in the center of the suitcase.b) Silver and black camera in a brown leather case. The camera is secured in the case with a wide, flat screw at the base. The camera also comes with its original document outlining the features and instructions of the camera. The camera itself is a Olympus Chrome Six. According to the document, the camera was used to produce “ (12) 6x6cm photos or (16) 4.5x6cm photos on a roll of 120 film”. The camera is black leather with a silver body. There are two silver knobs on the base. The top has four knobs, a viewfinder, and a mount for flash. The smallest knob next to the viewfinder is used to release the lens, which opens from a square panel in the front. The lens is a coated Olympus Zuiko lens. The brown case is Olympus brand and is custom fitted to the camera model. It opens from the top and has two snaps that secure it to the base of the case. A small flap can be opened to allow the camera to be used while remaining in the case. The strap that connects the top of the case to the bottom reads “J. R. GRICE / 9920 - 75 ST / EDMONTON / ALBERTA”. There is a short, thin strap that attaches to either side of the case by metal hardware - one side is broken, the leather has split. The case shows some wear - the connecting middle strap has a large horizontal tear at the seam, while the lens flap has a smaller horizontal tear on the right hand side. c) Green, silver and black recorder that has a strap, brown cloth case and spare reel. The brand on the case, recorder and strap is labeled as Sankyo. The recorder is a muted green colour, with black and silver components. It has three lenses on the front with metal lens caps, The viewfinder is clear. The strap is made of silver components and brown braided cord. The case is brown cloth with a gold zipper, with Sankyo Japan embossed on the side. The reel is made of grey plastic and branded as Kodak, but is believed to work with the recorder. d) Black and white stop watch on a red cord. Was likely used to time exposure times. e) Viewfinder in its original box. Brand is “Watameter”.f) Light meter on a silver snake-chain in its original box. Still operable.g) Blower brush in its original box. h) Handmade camera mount made from wood with attached trigger. There is also a spare trigger wire. i) Film reel it its original box. Front reads “BeautifFeel / Design that feels good” while the bottom says “every woman deserves a pair”l) Miscellaneous papers detailing movie film features and instructions. Have been folded, so they are creased.

- Two identical metal tripods with burgundy legs attached with white string. Three adjustable knobs are located at the top of the tripod allowing the metal bar inside to be adjusted maximizing the height. The folding and collapsible legs extend away from the vertical center in three sections to a length of 54.0 cm. A fourth adjustable knob, located at the bottom of the metal bar and meeting the top of the legs, allows the user to extend the legs of the tripod to the desired height. Each of the four knobs has the maker’s mark inscribed and reads: “ACME- LITE-CHICAGO- ” around the circumference. The feet are at a 45 degree angle and have a rubber stopper on the bottom giving the portable three-legged frame greater stability to resist lateral forces. A tripod may have been used for motion and still photography to prevent movement or to help achieve precise framing of an image.
