History / Biographical
The Wardle family was comprised of husband and wife, James Morey Wardle (June 26,1888 - May 18,1971) and Maud Leette (Roney) Wardle (May 24,1889 - December 1,1969), and their one child, Dorothy Hope Wardle (May 23,1919 - July 20,2003). James Wardle, born in Chiliwack, British Columbia, was a civil engineer and public servant. He was the Superintendent of Banff National Park from 1918-1921, Chief Engineer for Parks Canada from 1921-1935, and Deputy Minister of the Interior from 1935-1936. He is primarily known as a highway design engineer, particularly for building the Banff-Windermere, Banff-Lake Louise, and Banff-Jasper highways. He was a councillor for the Municipality of Rockcliffe Park in Ontario and he was the President of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies in Banff from 1925-1929. Mount Wardle in Vermillion was named after him in 1921. James married Leette on November 4, 1913, with whom he had one child, Dorothy. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy (also known as Dot and Dorie) grew up in Banff, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario, due to her father's position with the federal government. She was educated at the Mountain School in Banff and at the Elmwood School in Ottawa. All three family members were graduates of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. James graduated in 1912 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Leette graduated with a Bachelor's degree, and in 1942, Dorothy also earned a Bachelor's degree. Dorothy was prominent in student life and active in athletics. In 1941, Dorothy became the first woman elected as President of the Alma Mater Society and during her academic career, Dorothy was a member of the Levana Intercollegiate Debative, University Centenary Committee, and Queen’s War Aid Commission. Dorothy spent her career as a freelance writer however, upon graduation she served as the first Secretary-In-Charge of Records at Carleton College (now Carleton University) from 1942-1944 in Ottawa and in the mid-1950s worked as a secretary for the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary. Dorothy pursued a lifelong interest in traveling, art, and antiques. Although she was fiercely proud and protective of Banff and the Park, and remained a volunteer and patron of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Dorothy eventually settled in Sidney, British Columbia and shared an apartment with Sheila Iris Ritchie, with whom Dorothy travelled extensively. After her death in 2003, Dorothy, "Dorie," was laid to rest alongside her parents in the Old Banff Cemetery.

Series III: Queen's University, 7.5 cm, 1911-1980 (including graduation certificates for each family member and records pertaining to Dorothy's participation on the Alma Mater Society). Series IV: Travel, 44.5 cm, ca.1950-1988 (includes hand-written notebooks meticulously detailing their travels).
V75 consists of two series, 79.5 cm, ca. 1912-2001. Series I: Wardle Family, ca. 1912-1971, 6 albums, 31 cm of photograph prints and negatives (including family trips, trail rides in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and family gatherings). Series II: Dorothy Wardle, 1972-2001, 34 cm of photograph prints, negatives, and transparencies (including Dorothy's travels in Alberta and British Columbia, overseas, and various outings with friends).

History / Biographical
Dorothy V. Whyte, b.1893, was a Canadian Pacific Railway employee at Banff, Alberta, Canada, until 1939. Whyte came to Banff from the Yukon and was first employed by the Banff Springs Hotel in 1920. She worked as an Information Clerk and later Special Representative for the Canadian Pacific Railway until 1939. She worked in Vancouver until 1963, returning to Banff where she became involved in local affairs before returning to West Vancouver in 1969. While living at the coast, Whyte frequently visited the Mount Assiniboine area and maintained close ties with Banff. Dorothy Whyte is not related to the White/Whyte family of Banff.

Fonds consists of: I. Personal papers, business papers and ephemera mainly concerning Whyte's involvement in publicity and hospitality with Canadian Pacific, primarily with the Banff Springs Hotel. II. Correspondence and writings resulting from her friendship with Peter and Catharine Whyte and her interest in Banff affairs; correspondents include Catharine Robb Whyte, Jon Whyte and Erling Strom. III. Copy of last will and testament of Catharine Robb Whyte, 1977, and probate, 1980, of which Dorothy Whyte was a beneficiary. IV. Photographs pertaining to Dorothy Whyte, friends and associates; activities, particularly hiking and trail riding in Rocky Mountains; Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, events and staff; Banff people and events. Most views ca.1925.

History / Biographical
Howard Douglas, 1852-1929, was Superintendent of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada from 1896 until 1910 and Commissioner of Dominion Parks, 1910-1911. Douglas was involved in acquiring buffalo from the Pablo-Allard herd for Canada. The round-up commenced in 1907 and was completed in 1912 with a total of 716 animals purchased. In 1910, Douglas was instrumental in organizing a hunt of old bulls on the reserve. The scheme was quashed by the Montana Attorney General

Textual records pertain mainly to the Pablo-Allard buffalo acquisition, 1910-1911. This includes correspondence between Douglas and prospective participants in buffalo hunt of the Pablo-Allard herd on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, U.S.A.; mainly circular letters, telegrams, etc. from applicants and confidential letters between Douglas and Alexander Ayotte, assistant immigration agent Canada, Montana re the ill-fated last buffalo hunt. Also includes photocopies of miscellaneous clippings and Douglas biography, 1963, by Marie Douglas.

History / Biographical
Erich Pistor was born in 1873 in Graz, Austria. He studied History of Arts and Law and earned a doctor of Law degree in 1898. Pistor worked at the Chamber of Commerce in Graz and attended the 1899 International Congress in Philadelphia and was subsequently called to the Chamber of Commerce in Vienna. He published his first book "Der Exportförderungsdienst des Handelsmuseums in Philadelphia" in 1900. Pistor travelled through Siberia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce in 1901 and 1902 and wrote "Durch Sibirien in die Südsee" in 1903. Pistor organized many exhibitions for the Chamber of Commerce within Europe and in Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Pistor became Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Austrian-British Committee, and President of the Austrian-Greek Society. Pistor spoke twelve languages.
Erich Pistor met Conrad Kain in 1904 when Pistor hired Kain as a guide. Kain was again hired by Pistor in 1905 as a guide on Pistor's honeymoon trip. In 1908 Conrad Kain moved to Vienna and studied English with Pistor's wife and in 1909, Pistor contacted the CPR and the Alpine Club of Canada to secure summer employment for Kain as a guide with the ACC.
Pistor's first wife, Sara, was a British citizen with whom he had three children. Two of these children died in WWII in Stalingrad and Sara died in 1930.
In 1932 Pistor married his second wife and they had a son Gerhart, born 1938. Pistor and his family fled Vienna in 1944 during the bombing of the city and lived in Prein/Rax, then Reichenau. Dr. Erich Pistor died in 1954.

Also included are transcripts of 142 letters between Amelia Malek and Conrad Kain, 1906-1933; correspondence between Pistor and Conrad Kain, J. Monroe Thorington, Amelia Malek and others.
Fonds includes photographs of portraits of Kain, Kain's climbing and trapping views and Kain's farm in Wilmer, B.C.

Duncan W. Johnson, 1879-1961, was a civil servant at Banff and Jasper, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario. Between 1911 and 1917 Johnson, as Chief Accountant of Parks Branch, introduced a bookkeeping and accounting system into the Western National Parks and was assigned as acting Superintendent to Jasper National Park. During the years 1917-1920, Johnson conducted the first national parks publicity campaign which popularized the national parks with the prairie provinces and promoted the national parks as an auto tourist destination. In his efforts to expand tourist traffic to western Canada and the national parks, Johnson's plans included collaboration between Glacier National Park in the United States and Waterton Lakes National Park.

Fonds includes correspondence, resume, etc., 1915-1934, describing duties as accountant, national park superintendent and publicist; agreement 1956, between Johnson and Minister of Labour re historical editorials on the Labour Movement in Canada; newsclippings, 1917-1919, pertaining to motion picture, National Parks publicity, lectures and Johnson's marriage to Eleanor McLennan. Textual material includes a copy of the article "The Buffalo Cattle Cross" by E. S. Archibald, Director of the Government of Canada, Department of Agriculture , Central Experimental Farm, 1919; [Indigenous] legend pertaining to Waterton Lakesand and lecture notes by Duncan Johnson comparing National Parks in Canada and United States. Photographs are of Grey Owl (Archibald Stansfield Belaney) (d.1938) at Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba and one digital scan print of Eleanor McLennan

Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. Original colour transparencies by Edward Feuz, ca.1950-ca.1976, pertain to trips and scenic views in the Rocky Mountains. ; Professional papers include: Feuz's fuhrer-buch (guidebook) containing his certification as a Swiss Guide and testimonials from clients in Switzerland and Canada, 1901-1957; certificate of life membership, Alpine Club of Canada, 1947; and records of climbs re the Chateau Lake Louise, 1913-1930. History / Biographical
Erling Strom, 1897-1986, was a skier and lodge-owner who lived at Mount Assiniboine, British Columbia, Canada; New York and Vermont, USA; and Norway. Norwegian-born Strom pioneered cross-country skiing in the United States and the Canadian Rockies. He operated Mount Assiniboine Camp from 1928 until the 1970s. Strom's mountain expertise was critical to the success of the Lindley-Liek expedition which conquered Mount McKinley, Alaska in 1932. His autobiography "Pioneers on skis" describes his career as a ski instructor and lodge operator.

Cook, 1908, a published account of Cook's fraudulent first ascent of Mount McKinley, heavily annotated by Belmore Browne who refuted Cook's claim in 1909; and a letter from Lieutenant Colonel H. Westmorland of Keswick, Cumberland, to Mr. Randow, 1970 April 9, outlining Westmorland's skiing and climbing career in the Canadian Rockies.

Ernest Deniston Garner, 1900-1989, was an artist, journalist, poet and miner at Canmore, Alberta, Canada and England. Garner was born and educated in England, coming to Canmore with his niece in 1928, where he resided until 1937. In addition to working at Canmore Mines, he became active in Canmore affairs as correspondent for the Calgary Herald and established the Canmore Times, a mimeographed local newspaper, ca.1931. Garner returned to England in 1937.

Ernst Niederer, 1891-1978, was an alpine ski and climbing guide at Jasper, Banff, Columbia Icefield and Lake Louise, Alberta. Niederer was born in Teufen, Switzerland and came to Canada in 1920. He began guiding in 1928 and was certified in 1940. He retired to Victoria in 1951, but continued to ski and teach. Niederer was survived by his wife Ivy and son Ernie.

History / Biographical
Frederick Archibald Brewster, 1883-1969, was an outfitter and guide at Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Brewster was born in Kildonan, Manitoba and in 1888 moved with his family to Banff, where he received his education. He subsequently attended St. John's College, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, obtaining a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering. Brewster worked briefly as a prospector and in 1910 embarked upon a long career as an outfitter and guide, first with Brewster and Moore. He established operations in Jasper in 1912 and was responsible for important parties, including those of Samuel Prescott Fay and the United States Biological Survey. Brewster served with distinction in the First World War and was involved with mountain warfare training of the Lovat Scouts in the Second World War. He supplemented his outfitting business with a series of camps which doubled as ski lodges: Fred Brewster's Rocky Mountain Camps, and boat concessions.

The Galletly family were residents of Canmore and Banff, Alberta, Canada. David Drummond Galletly, 1838-1916, served as caretaker and guide for the Cave and Basin hot springs, 1897-ca.1910. Previously he worked on the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel and operated a hotel in Canmore. At the Cave and Basin, Galletly conducted tours and became known for his Scottish humor. Other family members included wife Ethel, daughters Viva and Ethel (Fulscher), son-in-law Fred Fulscher, and grandchildren Ronald and Adelina Fulcher.

George Bain Sutherland, 1890-1974, was an athlete and civil servant at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Sutherland was born in Scotland and was a competitive boxer there. Following service in the First World War, he returned to Scotland and married Margaret (Peg) Menzies (d.1959). In 1923, the Sutherlands emigrated to Canada. Sutherland continued his boxing career here during the 1920s. He worked for the Federal Government in Banff in various positions, including bathhouse attendant at Cave and Basin for 16 years, and garage worker until retirement in 1954. He instructed swimmers, Banff Swimming Club members and boxers.

Link spent many summers between 1928 and 1977 studying the Lake O'Hara region and building trails there, accompanied by his wife, Adeline Link, d.1943. The Links were frequently guided by Jim Boyce.

Gilbert M. Atkin, 1877-1969, came to Banff in 1905 shortly after completion of postgraduate studies in medicine. He first worked with Dr. Brett and continued to practice medicine in Banff, where he raised his family. During the First World War, Atkin served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

Textual records are primarily military medical material. Financial papers pertain to medical equipment. Gray Campbell, b.1912, was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable, rancher, writer and publisher at Banff and Cowley, Alberta and Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. Campbell served with the RCMP in Banff and Cowley districts from 1932 until 1939. He ranched in the Porcupine Hills area, ca.1948-1960, at the same time writing magazine articles on a number of subjects, including RCMP history.

Fonds consists of manuscripts and research papers, 196-; police papers, 1932-1935; correspondence, 1937-1957; publications, 1933-1942; Hal B. Hammond papers and photographs, 1887-1888, 1938, n.d.; and research and personal photographs, 1887-ca.1937.
Police papers are primarily reports, statements and news articles concerning a RCMP case involving the murder of four police officers and the deaths of three fugitives near Banff in 1935. They discuss the roles of Campbell, Bill Neish, Tom Wallace and George C. "Scotty" Harrison. Also includes Campbell's RCMP training papers and reports of various cases.
Manuscripts are primarily short articles on a variety of subjects, including Harry Stallworthy, RCMP history, Christmas and Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment.
The Hal B. Hammond material includes letters and manuscripts of an ex North West Mounted Police officer, 1884-1889, re RCMP history, Riel Rebellion, Milk River and Fort Carlton; also photographs of N.W.M.P. and Corporal H. B. Hammond, 1887-1888. Other photographs pertain to Harry Stallworthy, Fred Bagley, commercial views of Banff and area, ca.1925, and personal photographs, 1933.

History / Biographical
Helen Louise (Fulmer) Wells, 1893-1980, was a long-time resident of Banff, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of pioneer Banff residents Minnie Christina Fulmer, 1868-1962, and Walter P. Fulmer, 1863-1948. The family also included another daughter, Alice G. Fulmer, 1896-1989. The Fulmers were very active in local life and recreation and made numerous trips in the Canadian Rockies. In 1927, Helen Fulmer married Fred Wells, 1873-1975. The couple lived in Banff until the death of Fred Wells in 1975 at which time Helen Wells retired to Edmonton. Helen Wells was particularly interested in the history and Banff and area.

Helen Jo and Ernest Kennedy were residents of Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ernest Kennedy, d.1972, was Banff's dentist for many years. Josephyne H. (Helen Jo) Kennedy, d.1977, was involved with amateur theatre and other community activities. With Margaret Greenham and others, she founded the Banff Literary-Dramatic Club in 1924 and was involved with the club until it ceased activities. She studied theatre at the Banff School of Fine Arts from 1933 to 1937 and specialized in make-up. During the Second World War, she worked with the Canadian Red Cross Society while Ernest Kennedy performed dentistry.

Fonds consists primarily of Helen Jo Kennedy papers, 1919-1968, and Ernest and Helen Jo Kennedy photographs, 1926-1973.
Textual records include notes, scripts, correspondence, clippings, photographs and ephemera relating to Helen Jo Kennedy's studies and activities concerning the Banff Literary-Dramatic Club, Banff School of Fine Arts, Merry-Go-Round Theatre, etc. and volunteer war service. Includes her reminiscences about Margaret and Harry Greenham and local theatre, 1968, and miscellany of Dorothea Kennedy. Also includes miscellaneous personal papers of Dr. Ernest Kennedy, including accounts for "Karnival Kapers" fund raiser of the 1924 Banff Winter Carnival.
Photographs pertain to the Kennedys and friends in Hawaii and Banff, 1940-1973. Also includes a group portrait of the Rotary Annual District Conference at Lake Louise by W. J. Oliver, 1926; portrait includes Ernest Kennedy.

Hermann Hagedorn was an American writer who was known for his biographical works, particularly on Theodore Roosevelt, as well as poetry and novels. Late in life, Hagedorn became interested in Moral Rearmament. During a visit to the movement's headquarters on Mackinac Island, Michigan in 1958, he met George McLean (Chief Walking Buffalo of the Stoney Indians), an active proponent and traveller on behalf of Moral Rearmament. Intrigued by McLean's character and philosophy, Hagedorn wrote articles as well as drafts of a biography tentatively titled "A Chief in Two Worlds," but died before the work could be completed.
