History / Biographical: Ken Jones, 1910?-2004, was active during the period 1937 to 1941 as a ski guide between Lake Louise and Skoki Lodge and as a mining camp cook at McDame's Creek, British Columbia (1937). He worked summers farming at his home in Forde, British Columbia and winters at Lake Louise and the Yoho Valley on snow removal and various jobs (1937-1940). He mined at Base Metals Monarch Mine, Field, British Columbia in 1941, then returned to Forde, British Columbia and Glacier, British Columbia. During this period, he competed in various ski meets and was a friend of the Swiss guides at Lake Louise and Golden.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of a diary, photographs and a sound recording. Diary contains five year daily entries during the period 1937-1941. The diary was found in a deserted cabin in Moberly in 1974 and describes Jones' weather observations, employment details and personal matters as skiing guide, camp cook, miner, farmer, labourer and competitive skier. Diary also describes trips to Mount Assiniboine and Freshfield Glacier.; Sound recording is mainly of Ken Jones relating stories about mountain personalities, including Chet Ogan, Jimmy Simpson and Tom Wilson; also includes short discussion between Collins and Rummel. Recording was made by Ken Jones, Myrna Collins and Elizabeth Rummel at Sunburst Camp, Mount Assiniboine, July 1968.; Photographs are primarily b&w and include images of the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, Revelstoke, Yoho Valley, Lake Louise, Skoki, Freshfield, Wyoming; renovations and additions to Num-Ti-Jah Lodge; and hunting trips during the period ca.1930-1950. Also included is a CD-ROM of digitized images in TIFF and JPEG image file formats compiled in 2004 by Chic Scott and Dave Birrell.

History / Biographical: Leonard Henry Leacock, 1904-1992, was a musician and educator at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Leacock was born in England and raised in Banff, Alberta. He was educated in Banff and Boston and through the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, and the Royal School of Music, London, England. Leacock joined the staff of Mount Royal College, Calgary as a piano teacher in 1924 and retired from teaching ca.1989. His music career also included performing, composing and adjudicating. Throughout his life, Leacock was an avid mountaineer and photographer. He took numerous hiking and horse trips in the Banff, Jasper and Yoho areas and sometimes worked in trail camps or as a guide.

History / Biographical: Lillian Gest, 1897-1986, of Merion, Pennsylvania visited the Canadian Rockies almost every summer for sixty years, beginning in 1921. She was an active participant in "Off the Beaten Track" trips organized by Caroline Hinman between 1923 and 1933, in which young people camped, hiked, hunted and went horseback riding throughout the region between Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson. During the 1930s, Gest attended hikes of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and developed mountaineering skills at Alpine Club of Canada annual camps. Christian Hasler Jr. often served as her guide. Gest also belonged to the American Alpine Club, the Philadelphia Trails Club and the Lake O'Hara Trails Club. She spent considerable time in the Lake O'Hara region and wrote "History of Lake O'Hara" (1961), "History of Moraine Lake" (1970), and "History of Mount Assiniboine" (1979).

History / Biographical: Marguerite Beryl Orr Rutherford (also known as Marguerite Orr), 1903-1993, was a businesswoman and outdoor enthusiast at Banff and Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of Lorne and May Orr and grand-daughter of Wesley Fletcher Orr, early mayor of Calgary. Marguerite Orr grew up in Banff, where she attended high school with Earle Birney. In 1927, she married Clyde "Rusty" Rutherford, from whom she was later separated. During WWII, Rutherford worked as a hospital assistant at Whitehorse, Yukon. She later owned Cottage Crafts in Calgary and sold Eskimo art, ca.1960, when it was just becoming popular. Rutherford was a close friend of Allen Bill, war correspondent and later editor and sports columnist for the Calgary Herald.

History / Biographical: Mary Wright (Molly) Adams was born on 15 October 1868. in Ridgefield Connecticut. She was the third of five children born to Cornelia Ann Cook (1830-1902) and Daniel Lucius Adams (1814 - 1899) She died in Kobe, Japan on 23 January 1909 and was buried there.

History / Biographical: The Moore family resided at Banff, Alberta and Yoho Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Col. Philip A. Moore, 1879-1951, was a guide, soldier, lecturer and publicist. Pearl Brewster Moore, 1889-1973, was a homemaker and tourist lodge operator. Daughter, Edmee Brewster Moore (Reid), 1908-1971, was a homemaker and wife of Charles Reid. Pearl Brewster, born in Banff, was an active sportswoman. In 1905, she met Philip Moore, who had joined Jim and Bill Brewster in the packing business. The Moores made their home in Banff in 1907. A trained soldier, Philip Moore distinguished himself in France in the First World War and served with the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War. The Moores ran various Canadian Pacific Railway facilities, including Yoho Valley Bungalow Camp, during the 1920s and early 1930s. Col. Moore lectured widely during this period using motion pictures and lantern slides. During the 1930s, the Moores travelled extensively and were active in the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. Pearl Moore was instrumental in the Banff-Jasper fund during the Second World War. In 1971, Pearl Moore gave their log home, a showcase of Stoney Nakoda artifacts and art, to the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

Nellie Adeline Gray Harris died in 1997.

History / Biographical: Norman Titherington, 1894-1976, was a fire towerman in Banff National Park. Titherington came to Canada from England in 1919 following ranch work in Idaho and World War I service with the British Army. In 1949, he embarked on the seasonal career of a towerman at the Aylmer Fire Tower, serving until 1965

History / Biographical: The Wilson family were guides, outfitters and ranchers at Morley, Kootenay Plains, Banff and Nordegg, Alberta, Canada. Thomas Edmonds (Tom) Wilson, 1859- 1933, and Minnie McDougall Wilson, 1865-1936, had six children, including sons John Clark Wilson, 1888-1932, and Thomas Edmonds (Ed) Wilson, 1892-1973. Daughters were Ada, 1886-1967?, Rene, Bessie and Dora. Tom Wilson is credited with the discovery of Lake Louise in July of 1882, while working as a packer on the Canadian Pacific Railway survey through the mountains. In 1883, Wilson established his own business at Banff, Lake Louise and Field, British Columbia. After selling the business in 1904, Tom Wilson operated a horse ranch at Kootenay Plains. He later retired to Banff. Ed Wilson was born at Morley and raised in Banff. Around 1910 he began working for Brewster Trading Company at Banff and, later, Lake Louise. Just before the First World War, he moved to Nordegg, where he worked for the Bighorn Trading Company for many years.

History / Biographical: Ulysses LaCasse (or Ulysse; or La Casse), 1888-1972, was a trail guide and national park warden at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. LaCasse came to Banff in 1908 and worked in various cooking jobs including trail cook for surveys and trail outfits. He guided Caroline Hinman's trail riding groups before joining the Canadian Army in Europe and Siberia. LaCasse accompanied Byron Harmon, Soapy Smith and Louis Freeman on their five hundred mile expedition through the Canadian Rockies, 1924. LaCasse was a long-time warden in the Castle Mountain and Lake Louise districts

Field studied key glaciers in British Columbia and Alberta from 1922 until 1981.

History / Biographical: The Woodworth family was a pioneer family of Banff, Alberta, Canada. Benjamin Franklin Woodworth, 1861-1920, and Fred Woodworth, 1860-1923, came to the Banff area in 1883, and established a homestead at the base of Cascade Mountain. They were sons of Douglas B. Woodworth, member of parliament in Nova Scotia who came to Banff briefly in 1883 regarding a claim on the hot springs at the Cave and Basin. Fred Woodworth became postmaster in Banff before returning to Nova Scotia some time after 1890. His only child, A.M. [Anna Maud?] Woodworth, died in Banff in 1890.; Ben Woodworth remained in Banff, working for the CPR on railway construction and later as stable foreman for the Banff Springs Hotel. He continued as stable foreman at the Sanitarium Hotel in 1892, moving to the Bankhead coal mine in 1905. In 1910 he became caretaker of the Buffalo Paddock, remaining in the position until his death in 1920 as a result of a horse-related accident.; In 1888, Benjamin Franklin Woodworth married Elizabeth Anne McIntyre (McIntire), 1868-1936, who had come to Banff in 1887 from Burnley, England. The Woodworths had eleven children: 1) Ethel, 1890-1958, married to Jack Edwards; 2) Benjamin Douglas, 1891-1956, a road builder with the federal government in Banff; 3) Joseph F., 1892-1976, a civil servant and realtor in Banff; 4) Ella Maude, 1894-1977, first married to Jack MacAulay who was killed in 1917, and later married to Forest H. Kidney; 5) Frederick A., 1895-1916, an electrician at the Bankhead Mine; killed in action in First World War; 6) Annie Elizabeth, 1897-1977, married to Ulysses LaCasse; 7) G. Wright came to the mountains in 1905 after homesteading and worked for Banff National Park as a warden in the Bankhead, Spray River and Ghost River districts. He was employed in various other jobs related to guiding, construction, equipment maintenance and repairs between Donald, British Columbia and Banff during the 1930s and 1940s, as a camp foreman for the United States Army near the Columbia Icefield, 1942. Andrew "Scotty" Wright and Lillian Hunter Wright, 1890-1936, had two children, Mary, 1914-1968, and William (Bill) "Scotty", 1929-2003. Mary Wright Burles was manager at various times of Skoki Lodge, the Lake Louise Inn, Sunshine Lodge and the Bar C Ranch near Morley where her father often lived his later years.
